3. Decent Processor. She is not much into gaming or other high end stuff.
4. Sturdy, her phones enjoy free falls almost every day.
5. Decent after sales & service.

Not sure If I am asking for too much under 20K. Please suggest.
MI4, 64 GB.

4 = good case only.

Hmm but heating issues are a turn off.

Xiomie seem to have taken corrective measures with heating issues in upcoming Note 2.

If #1 is of highest priority, then you could look at the HTC Desire 826, its got 13MP cameras at the front and back which have pretty good quality. It's a touch above 20K but you may be able to get it for less.

The Zenfone 2 is a great option, it has a good camera IMO but has received mixed reviews. Apart from that it's a brilliant phone and fulfills each of your requirements.

After sales service of Xiaomi phones is non-existent and the Mi4 does not have a very good back camera.
Hope that helps.

hmmm Quoting from the article you linked.

These posters have been circulated across various markets in Delhi by an unregistered entity named Delhi Mobile Sellers Association. According to a distributor, this issue originally surfaced from Karol Bagh’s Gaffar Market.
If anyone is familiar with Gaffar Market, they must be knowing the kind of items they sell in their shops.

I had a problem with my HTC One M7's camera, and I contacted the HTC service Support. The issue was fixed within a week without any cost or delay. I'm not saying that HTC has bullet-proof reliability but the after-sales service of HTC would be better than Xiaomi.

Agree with Marauder. HTC service is one amongst the better in the industry.

Just to be double sure, I enquired with a close acquaintance mine who heads sales for the South region in HTC while also being fairly familiar with the other regions.

He categorically/officially confirmed there are no service issues whatsoever, and that, since HTC has changed its strategy against sales through certain channels, these rumors have been spread.

So, take a deep breath of relief and go ahead with your purchase of an HTC phone if you have made up your mind.

Tough one. I would suggest the Oneplus One 16GB. After sales might be an issue with this, otherwise a brilliant device.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is decent too but comes with a lot of bloatware.

If your wife can live without Android, then please look no further than the Lumia 640 XL. Ticks all your boxes except that it's a Windows phone.

2. Moto turbo - Reviews are average
3. HTC One M8

I would recommend note 4 for its Lag free performance, great multi tasking, fantastic camera and battery life. As you are looking at viewing docs I assume your need includes managing work on the go.. Note 4 would be perfect for all such situations. now with recent price drop you cAn get one at 4ok. In my view, this device is between phone and computer rather than phone and tablet.. Check it out.

Thank you for all your suggestion guys .

I was leaning towards One Plus One however I did not read much positive reviews about its after sales & service and reviews for Xiomi are not very confidence boosting either. Honestly speaking, I am not very fond of the China manufactured phones, no offence intended.

HTC Desire 826 looks like a good option, along with Lumia 640 XL if I can convince her for Windows.

The 1+ service is quite decent actually. I was in Australia, and they gave my wife in Chennai the replacement charger for her damaged charger while i was yet to email the actual amazon invoice (no insistence on hard copies). Fat chance getting that service from the bigger brands.

btw, even iphone and desire 826 (not 100% sure) are made in china. Their manufacturing is eons ahead of us.

Good to know that, flipkart customer's review were not as positive about One +.

By Chinese phone I meant cheap quality phones. Not because they are cheap and I have lots of money to spend on expensive ones, but because I am scared of running around to get them repaired.

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

The craze for Chines phones has died down the same way the hype around them was built up. The innumerable brands with almost similar looks and buggy SW have made the users wary of these phones. After the bitter experience with Mi4 I will never buy a Chinese phone again. I am just waiting for Nexus 5 2015 to exchange this piece of junk.

I think you are indeed asking for 'too much'.

1. Camera: Most phones have two, but there is a significant range in terms of quality. If the quality is average, you will quite soon be looking out for another replacement. So keep aside more money or increase your budget now.
And since you mentioned 'camera' as the first point, I assume that the missus wants a really good camera phone.
I am not sure why you want 5 and 6. You can ask around for a competent technician around your area. He might give you better service than the service centers.
If the required Apps are available on other platforms, then do not restrict to Android alone.

phamilyman has already suggested "get a good protective case".
So, search for those before you buy the phone.
I personally use Otterbox Defender series case for my phone - it makes the phone bulky but also gives peace of mind.
In my experience most people (including most women) do not prefer bulky "phone + case". If the phones are too big, they need to buy the right sized purse as well. And if the phone ringer is not loud enough, they cannot hear the ring when the phone is inside.

Too many problems, no?

The HTC 826 is a good for the camera specs it has. Wonderful results too. However be weary of the sound quality. This area sucks as had thought i was deaf on receiving calls in crowded areas. No problem of you are u using a earphone.

One + one had me going on all fours to the service centre. Guess it's luck, but i had my phone screen go off every minute. Software update only gave succour for half a day. Was advised a motherboard change which would take 15 days due lack of spares. Returned the phone for a refund.

Choose wisely, but at the end it's your luck

If you can extend your budget a little, I would suggest the Samsung Galaxy A5, its available for 21k on Flipkart. One of my friend bought it recently and I am completely smitten by the camera quality(both front and rear). Plus it also fits nicely on all the other criteria mentioned by you.
