I remember the iMac, but it was not really visible in India (barring few aficionados and splurgers) - or was it(?), but iPod really took everyone by storm and by the time iPhone came out the world had shrunk (because of internet) and Apple fanaticism had grown.

So much that if Apple had come up with turd, I am sure people would've flocked to buy it, queuing up days before the release!

My budget will be under 25K.
Your options include

1. Sony xperia SP, Customization power of Andriod ( Good Customizations by sony)
2. Lumia 820 - Ticks all the boxes , but it can get boring after sometime
3. HTC one X + ( Quad core andriod beast, best of the lot)

It depends on what OS you prefer really. I'd stick to andriod over WP as of now

I dont think you will get the one x+ for under 25k. I thought it was more near the 33 - 34k range?

No, I am talking about US, I lived there that time. The iMac took the consumer market by storm when it came. I remember how it was featured in the cover page of Time Magazine, it looked like a Pixar character. By 2000-2001, Apple was back in the pink of health. I don't think anybody in India bothered with Apple, iMac was not cheap even then.

The iPod took Apple to a completely new market and totally new level of profit. Jobs was using iPod to sell more iMac, that was his original idea anyway. The iPhone did the same, again.

Apple declared a loss in 2001:

Apple started making $1B+ in 2005. That was the same year when iPod began selling in millions per quarter.

A $25 million loss is nothing, it could be just depreciation effect from the previous years and massive investments. That was the year they sunk lot of money into iPod reseach & Apple retail store. If you have accounting background, you will easily see this.

BTW, if you look at 1999 & 2000, they did make $601M and $786M profit. Same goes for 2002 and later. Thanks your graph, now we know they became profitable from 1999 itself. The iMac came out in 1998.

But iMac sales not sufficient for continued profit. As seen from the same graph, big profits started from 2005 onwards.

Got a quote of 25K for the One X and 29.5K for the One X Plus last week. Both prices inclusive of B & W.

Seems to be out of stock everywhere.
The black units were out of stock at the outlets I visited last week.

HTC ONE X + retails for about 29.5 on flipkart so you can probably get a better deal at a local sales outlet.

Also, it's worth that extra 4k to get one of the best devices.

Ya, cant seem to find the One X+ anywhere (neither online nor sales outlets). At 29.5k its a pretty good deal.

Anyone has experience using the Optimus G here??

you can try ebay.

Optimus G is also a very good phone. Its the LG version/branding of the nexus 4. I believe it should be possible to get the Sony Xperia ZL for around 32-33k which is better than both of these.

The ZL looks and feels awesome. Checked it out a couple of times at the next door Sony gallery. Some people seem to have issues about viewing angle and the plastic back, which to me seem like pros.
The rubber - plastic layered back provides superb grip, similar to an anti - skid surface and makes the phone feel more hand than say the Lumia 920 and the Xperia Z (the other phones I was contemplating), which I thought were a shade too large to be comfortable toying with.

I remember seeing One X+ on bigc online portal @ 28.5k That was the best price and one of the few stores with stock. Rest of them are all out of stock. I wanted to pick one but lack of local availability turned the tide in favour of Galaxy Grand

Again, you are talking from hindsight. In 2000-2001, everybody was quite thrilled with Apple. Nobody had the inkling of what was to follow.
