re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Need advice friends.

Need to buy a mobile for my father. No fancy requirements, just need something which my father finds useful like large keys, nominal display, good battery talk time, loud and clear voice, rugged use. Something suitable for a senior citizen. Budget is upto 5K. Any suggestions in Nokia or Samsung or any other brand.

Also what websites can I get the mobile from? Would be gifting him as a Dussera present.

I'd strongly the Nokia C2-01 or the Nokia X2-01. And yes, I'd recommend you buy it from Flipkart. Probably the best e-commerce site to come out of India, and they do cash on delivery.

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

I'm a big gadget freak especially mobile phones, and keep changing mobiles frequently (for the past 8 years changes more than 150 mobiles)

Coming to the point, I have 2 mobiles, Sony Ericsson Satio U1 & BlackBerry 8520 and looking for a change now. Heart says "don't waste the hard earned money in gadgets" but the stupid mind is looking for a upgrade.

Here is the present scenario,
1) BBerry 8520
-Presently I don't use any BB scheme (used previously but now I don't require this feature anymore)
-QWERTY is a must for texting
-Quite impressed with the call clarity (both voice & network)
-Battery back up is 'ok'
-Gives a genuine look for my profession

2) Satio U1
-Camera, very much impressed with the camera clarity which I use frequently
-Music, I use during driving and sometimes in workplace too
-No frequent calls or sms. I'm using my personal number in this mobile (only for my family and close friends to reach me when my other number is not reachable)

Adding my other requirement, GPS Navigator which I'll be using when I return to India (planned some tours with family and a lot of travelling with fiancee and friends)

Now my question is should I upgrade now? If so, either of this or both of this and to which model? My max budget for upgrade will be 10k (after swapping the old ones)

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

I bought a Windows Mobile 6.5 mobile, HTC Imagio, from Indiatimes shopping. The handset is probably only sold in the US by Verizon, and the device is co-branded by HTC and Verizon. It is SIM-unlocked, so I could use my SIM card in it without any issues.

However there are certain software, such as Live TV, which are only from Verizon and not available in India. I would like to remove them from the phone as they are useless apps eating up battery life (the Live TV sits in the background all the time).

For this reason I intend to flash the phone with the HSPL and then probably go for a custom ROM. This will void the warranties, but the phone only carries a seller warranty and no manufacturer warranty. Also since Verizon doesn't operate in India, I am unlikely to ever miss these apps.

What do you guys say? Would it be safe to flash the ROM?

Nokia E-series check off the keyboard, call clarity, battery backup and professional look requirements. Do ensure you pick one with an updated firmware.

Please stay away from the X2-01, it sucks bigtime. The keyboard is too hard and the phone is a pain to hold and operate by one hand.

Nokia E series (E63 and E71), Nokia 5800. Guess HTC Wildfire is just above 10k now; you could check that out.

I second the above suggestion, Nokia now seem to have 3.5mm jacks standard. I have it on the E-63 (cost me around 9k almost a year and a half back), and the X2-01 given by the office (now that phone sucks bigtime!).

Android phones too would probably have a 3.5mm jack, but the only phones you would find within your budget would be MicroMax or other local brands.

How stringent is the 10K limit, for example is it flexible by +/-2K. If yes then Samsung Galaxy Ace is available for 14K, Galaxy Fit for 10.5K, Galaxy pop for 8950/- so there are many options don't have to buy Micromax. Also most would support 3.5mm Jack and mp3 playback is good on Android.

Apart from Samsung i see some Motorola models as well which are below 10K and come with Android 2.3.

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Got a new mobile phone for my sister - Nokia C3. I bought it from Croma at Malad. Final price - Rs 6149. This includes 3 years warranty - first year from Nokia and the next 2 years from Croma (Not sure how it works). Rs 250 was charged for the additional 2 years of warranty. The retail box includes : Phone, Charger, Bluetooth headset and earphones. Absense of USB cord is missed. Camera is pretty average. But my sister is not going to use the camera much. This phone was mainly bought for the qwerty. Phone's built quality is good and does not look like a cheap phone. Battery life will be good given that it is Symbian and there will not be much internet usage on the phone.

Croma has started a very nice thing wherein you can get SIM cards from the Croma store itself without paying anything! SIM cards (Post paid and prepaid) of Docomo and Vodafone were on offer. This offer is only for phones above Rs 6000. You need to have the documents and a photograph though. Fortunately I had taken the documents so got the SIM card immediately. This saved me a trip from going to the Vodafone store. It is a great thing because new phone buyers can just buy the SIM from there itself. I selected Vodafone because my good experience with the operator. The Vodafone guy said the card will be activated within 72 hours (Since tomorrow is a Sunday). I found this to be weird but we were in no hurry to get the SIM activated.

And do not be disappointed by the poor playback quality with the stock player on Android. You can always instlall some other app - like power amp or Mobo Player.

That said, which of the androids has best audio quality (music playback?)

I currently use the pop (aka "mini" GT S5570),

Thanks for the responses.

What is you opinion on Sony Ericsson W8.
Its looks very good. This is another important factor.

The phone is for my sister and she is not particular on it being a smart phone.
