re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

For a start, what exactly is a "more complete" OS?

On such a small screen, how is HD video of any importance?

ok... ... I never thought of that.

Now that I have, I wonder if the lens is actually up to doing it justice?

I'm just quibbling: I'd probably be very happy with an N8, although I've more-or-less decided to abandon Nokia on my next purchase. But, I am not buying the next phone for fun, and the purchase won't happen while my N82 is still on the road. Anything could have happened to the market by that time!

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

i like the n8. currently use an n 82 and i really like it because of its user friendliness and camera quality. carl zeiss optics are really superb.

i ve been a nokia friendly person since my first nokia phone in 1996-97.

understand vodafone is launching 3G services for mobile users around mid Jan along with the Internet access 3G sticks.

People say that Android has some advantages in terms of application being unlimited and free of charge

By contrast they say Nokia N8 can support a lot of stuff via Ovi store etc but one has to pay for and activate certain things like Push Mail etc. I have push mail for my gmail currently setup on my N82 and it works ok. Also have several other applications downloaded on this N82 and they all seem to work quite well indeed.
Need to know whether I shall need to pay Nokia for this service or what. My Nokia internet etc is activated via Vodafone Connect and works quite well as of now.

Any and all inputs would be greatly appreciated.

Basically which would you choose - given a choice between the Google Nexus S Android at about 35 grand OR N8 at 23 grand OR Samsung Galaxy 9000 at 27 grand.

My wish list (not in order of priority).

1. decent applications (to be used one at a time)
2. nice display and screen (colours)
3. user friendliness
4. camera quality
5. push mail service which configures both personal as well as official id
6. access to office documents and occasional editing where required while on the move (excel, ppt, word etc)
7. good touchscreen
8. reasonably tough and capable of handling day to day stresses
9. good looking phone because I like smart things
10. easy to sync, easy to backup, easy to keep all contacts etc alive and with minimum fuss

most grateful for inputs please

While not going way too off-topic, Android has certain disadvantages and its clearly visible if you google it. For Symbian, lot of applications are available on OVI store.Period.

N8's camera is definitely capable and just check Ram's post. Similarly with OVI suite, all data can be synced / backed-up at a click of a button.I would still vote N8 as a very capable phone.

Nexus S (assuming it be a better version of SGS) and Galaxy S all the way except for the point 4, i.e Camera.
Btw, I found the pics from N82 to be better than N8

Nexus S will cost around 24k in US, i think it would be around 30k here.

Check out HTC Desire too

The important thing is that Nokia N8 can play the video via HDMI on your LCD TV. Is that important enough?

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

@kpzen and mcr

what about the info that they gave me saying that certain services have to be paid for to be enabled by Nokia whereas for Android this is not the case?

kpzen - i didnt like the HTC desire much - I need to be attracted to a product/ brand from the heart - that part was missing when I saw the HTC.

Then one of the shop chaps said that the galaxy s is very delicate and may not take as much regular usage related stress as any Nokia. Is this true?

Google Nexus I havent yet seen though one shop chap says he is getting his personal Nexus sometime the following week and has asked me to be patient till then and see it before deciding.

mcr - who is ram? which post are you referring to please?

I can readily appreciate the value and the capabilities of the N8 - plus I just basically love its looks. and I m generally comfy with a Nokia just because Im used to it.
Am wondering if this is the right time to make a break from this strange brand loyalty that I have or not.
But one of the most important things for me is the camera quality and capability.
this push mail thing is a bit addictive as Im finding, and if the N8 is efficient in that aspect, then I really dont mind. Iwant my gmail easily accessible. I want facebook and linked in to be easily accessible. also want my office mail easily accessible as well as the ability to edit word, excel and ppt as required, without too much fuss. This part is the concern on Nokia - apparently this is a pay and enable service whereas in Android it is not. I have downloaded the TBHP app from Ovi but am unable to connect. keeps saying some error or other while all other apps seems to work perfectly!
Need clarity on these points in bold.

Deals:
One small local shop I know (from whom I ve bought 4-5 phones so far) says he will match the best deal I get anywhere else.
Reliance is offering it at 24199/- and a further discount of Rs 1000 if I use a Master Card to pay.
Sangeetha says 25000 including 1 years anti theft or damage insurance + a pair of Sennheiser headphones free.

I am taking my time and asking you for help because I dont want to rush into this without having done adequate research.

please share inputs

cheers

Not to me:
I haven't got an LCD TV!

Point taken, though. There's lots of people that do have them.

There is an HDMI out option in N8 so that you can connect to LCD tv.
It also means the capability of the phone hardware to playback HD resolution videos downloaded directly from Net/Torrents without downsizing.

Samsung Galaxy S Supports HDMI Output Via Micro USB Cable
Besides outputting 720p HD video content, the Nokia N8 outputs Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 channel surround sound to HD-ready TVs, audio/video receivers (AVRs), and home theater systems via the HDMI cable provided in the box.

Dolby Laboratories, Inc. collaborates with Nokia to incorporate Dolby surround sound technologies into select Nokia handsets like the Nokia N8.

This makes the Nokia N8, the world’s first smart phone to become an HD mobile entertainment device. It brings a true cinema-like experience to mobile.

As of December 2010, no iPhone, Android nor Blackberry holds a candle to the Nokia N8 in this regard!
