Yes Raj

Look up a Samsung shop. they have some very decent dual sim models.

Else, in the semi-chinese brands - Spice / Fly is really decent. Been using Fly since march and a friend has Spice since 2+ months. No issues there.

esp if you want a qwerty (samsung doesnt have)

but samsung has dual sim active at once (call in waiting!)

Thanks a lot for the advice guys. no dual sim phones had 3G. Samsung does have one phone with dual sim & 3G (B7722) but its not launched in india yet. my dad wanted 3G so now he is okay with buying a single sim phone. so we have changed our priorities now! we had to!

so the new priorities for my dad are:

1) Single sim but with 3G
2) No touchscreen (B7722 has touchscreen so we wont wait for it)
3) Light weight & compact, less that 115gms
4) Keypad should not be visible, so flap or slider
5) should not be too high end & complicated to use (hence nokia!)
6) good camera & basic features like music player & bluetooth

i have shortlisted the Nokia 6700 slide & Samsung S5550 Shark2. Nokia costs around 9.5k, is it a good phone?

how much does the samsung cost? is it released in india?

thanks in advance.

I don't find 5233 any value for money. It is just an entry level touch screen phone without any additional features. The package doesn't even include memory card or data cable.

At Rs 7500, 5230 comes with 3G, GPS, 2 GB memory card, data cable, car stand and lifetime navigation license.

What's with the naming convention of Nokia ? 5233 < 5230.

I was going to suggest the 6700 slide before I read that you'd shortlisted it already

Go for it! I replaced my 6300 with this one & am very happy with it, have been using it for a couple of months now. An excellent 5 mp camera with auto focus & good battery life - a charge sees me through 3 to 4 days, depending on usage. Good slider too & I like the keys.

Which phone is he presently using?

Thanks suman. He is presently using many phones. a samsung, a nokia & even a spice dual sim!

have you noticed any bugs with the phone or had any issues?

i was basically comparing the Nokia 6700 with -

1) Nokia 6600I slide
2) Samsung S5550 Shark2
3) Samsung S7350 Ultra
4) Sony Hazel

Of course, since its for my dad, i am more inclined towards a nokia but i really like the samsungs & sony in terms of looks. the nokia look a bit plane jane! what is your opinion?

in my N85, if I set email retrieval to automatic, it stops at the internet permission dialog until I look at it and allow. how to allow it permanently? I don't want the connection always on because that drains the battery.

Went ahead and purchased Micromax Q7 yesterday for Rs 4850/- near my place here.

Everything is fine, but somehow it seems to clumsy with a poor keypad(compared to my E63) & the software loaded is crap. Its fast enough, looks decently elegant, voice quality is not bad, still, some how I am not able accept it as "my kind of" phone.

GPRS & Wifi configs are done & able to browse with opera mini 4.2.

Still, the interface provided is very bad. It does not allow you to type & send text in one go even in applications. It pops up multiple screens. A send option needs 3-4 steps to go through.

Wonder if its possilbe for us to get the software /source code for thse phone software so that we can look at improving them?

No bugs or issues so far, the only irritant I've faced is that for sms, my earlier Nokias had an option for showing the frequently sms-ed numbers. This one doesn't, however, you can type the first couple of alphabets & it throws up the names for you to select.

I've always been a Nokia user (except for one Ericsson years ago) so I've no idea about Samsungs. You can probably PM Ashthedivx for his inputs. However, I can safely say this - in terms of VFM & build quality, none of them will come close to the 6700 slide. I doubt you'll get a 3G phone with 5 mp camera & two video cameras (it has a secondary camera as well in front) at this price point. Additional advantages - very good screen visibility/text legiibility under direct sunlight (a Nokia trademark for the 16m color display phones), call clarity etc.

Btw, I don't think the 6600 is officially available here any longer, is it? My options were the 6700 Gold (way costlier), 5800 (didn't find it VFM) & the newly launched X series (not at my age ). All of a sudden, I saw the 6700 slide & freaked when I was told the price (almost half the others). I have the silver one & I don't find it Plain Jane at all. It has the right kind of subtle & understated looks - but that's just my opinion

thanks for the inputs suman.

i have saved the pics of all the phones on my desktop. all are equally specced & my favourites are Nokia 6700 & samsung S7350. I'll show the pics to my dad & let him decide based on the looks! most probably, we both will prefer the nokia, as its a nokia!

Control Panel > Settings > Connection > Destinations

Move the selection highlight over Internet, Options > Default Connection

Open Internet, move the highlight over the destination of choice, Options > Edit > Use Access Point > Automatically.

This is from an E Series phone, but am assuming it should be similar in your phone too!

got it, thanks man. Although I would have preferred to give a specific permission to mail client and not a global permission. now to see how long the battery lasts with this.

You should turn off automatic sync'ing of mails, and do it manually now and then if you are concerned about batter life. If it is on automatic, my battery lasts for 2 days - with manual, more than 3 days. I am talking about Lotus Notes Traveler and E72, but should be similar for MS exchange / other phone model combinations.

Just bought a E52 last week. The firmware that came with it 33.02 is very very buggy and initially I was cursing my luck and the phone to no end. But after loading 34.01 everything is now a breeze. The Nokia push email after a few hiccups is working really fine now. In fact I was so impressed with the push email thingy that gave the E52 away to my wife and brought myself a BB bold 9000 to get the full gamut of push email services.

The GPS on the E52 is such a wonderful tool and I just cant stop playing with it. The maps and the positioning and speed applications are way too much fun. Any one who wants a fully loaded phone at not such an inflated price do take a look at the E52. But ensure that you change the firmware immediately at your local Nokia care shop.
