Help required for PS3 - Blinking red light & lens cleaning

hey guys, i was watching a blue ray and suddenly my ps2 stopped working and a blinking red light showed. then i switched it off and turned it on again and it beeped 3 times and the blinking red light showed. i googled and got some info that it might be the hard disk or the power supply.

i didnt want to give it to sony since my warranty is over anyway so i gave it to a local guy who all my friends give their consoles to. he got back to me saying its the motherboard which is spoiled and it will cost 9.5k to repair. does the ps3 motherboard actually cost that much?

please help soon guys i need to give the guy the go ahead or take my ps back from him.

The motherboard cannot go kaput so soon. The most common problem with PS3s is the optical drive. Are you sure you checked the diagnostic code correctly? If the mobo is indeed dead, it would cost around that much, but will be from someone else's console, i.e. used.

Just for kicks, did you try resetting the PS3 by holding the power button pressed for a few seconds when turning on?

which BD were you using? (it does not matter anyway). Does the PS3 function normally apart from the BDs?

being a owner of a PS3 out-of-warranty. I am worried now!

As the YouTube video from Blak06 shows, it kinda really sucks to get a PS3 that won't turn on. Nobody wants to get the flashing red light on their PS3. But MXACE got the flashing red light problem - and found a fix. We're not sure how it works (we're not even sure it's a real fix), and we're not telling you to do the same thing. And please, don't take matters into your own hands to the point that you'll ruin your warranty.

Anyway, here's the story from MXACE:

Hey, today a woke up to a red flashing light on my ps3. I wondered wut it meant, searched it on google and found some pretty bad news. DEAD. after about 1/2 an hour of trying to turn it on i search a fix on google, but came up empty handed.

i decided that i would take the matter into my own hands. i took the hard drive out and turned it on, and to my amazement it work i dont know how, but it worked. i then wanted to play resistance fall of man. i booted up the game and boom it turned off beeped 3 times and the light flashed red onece again.

i took out the hard disk and booted it up again turned it off and put the hard disk back in. ive been playing ever since and it seems to be working fine. just thought that id give u guys a heads up, to help anyone else out there with the same problem.

And just in case we didn't get the news right the first time, we got another email from MXACE a while later:

hey yesterday i woke up to bad news, i turned on my ps3 by the swich in the back and about 2 seconds later it beeped three times and the red light started flashing. after trying to turn it on for about 1/2 an hour i realized that it wasnt going to turn on...

i did some searching on the web and found nothing but 360 had the same problem. heres the interesting thing i found a ''fix'', all i did was take out the hard disk, and turn it on to get my game out. then i put the HD back in and turned it on. it worked. i booted up a game and the same damn red flashing light came back on.

i repeated the steps and checked to see it the game would work now, and it did! im currently useing my ps3 to write this. i wanted to let you guys over at QJ.net because i couldnt find a fix anywere and maybe if you post this ill end up helping someone else.

Finally, can we give two pieces of advice? If you're PS3's busted, take care of it right away - ask to get it fixed or replaced NOW. If you wait, then it becomes a question of "why did you wait so long?" It just makes it easier to prove your point if you bring it in as soon as possible.

Second, if you're getting a launch console, keep the box, packaging, etc. Keep everything! Keep the receipts! Throw nothing away. Take lots of pictures. Because the odds of a launch console being buggy are higher than if you bought a console a year or two after launch.

If you've got more advice, be sure to share it with your fellow gamers.
Possible ps3 red light fix - PS3 Forums - PlayStation Universe

Take the hard disk out, turn the system on,see if it works.
And usually anyone who doesn't know anything about repairs, puts the blame on the motherboard. Check if the system works without a hard disk attached to it.

One quick slightly OT question: How long do you guys keep your ps3 on for ? Sometimes i keep mine on for 8 hours at a go (gaming for 4 hours and the rest for music and videos) is this ok ?
Kind of worried because i lost 2 xbox 360s prior to this (RROD) and it happened because of over heating both times (both ttimes the 360 was just out of warranty when the RROD came) This time i bought the ps3 and hope even this does not overheat. (plus the ps3 cant even be chipped/modded :( )

There have been days when my PS3 is left ON for more than 12 hours when I was playing GTA4.
Sometimes, I leave it on for updating the firmware and forget to select the shutdown option. No issues as of now due to over usage.
Only thing is the fan is a little noisy when working at full rpm. But, when that happens, you hardly get to hear it as the volume of the game drowns it

I have one OT question regarding PS3. Should i buy it from Sony authorised place or from Palika Bazaar? Will the PS3 from Sony authorised station will be able to play pirated games or would i need to buy original games only?

There are no pirated games available for the PS3 as of now. You will have to buy the original games. (ranging from 1500/- to 4500/- INR)

From Sony world, you will get warranty (if you are particular about it)
From Palika Bazaar, you might not get the warranty.

Check out other stores like ezone, reliance etc, as the prices have been dropped recently to 19990/- and some of these stores might be giving further discounts or freebies!

Thanks a lot. I think if there are no pirated games available, then no point buying it from outside. Will stick to sony world.

Playstation 3 / Blu Ray Lens Cleaning !?

Ok My PS3 (fat 80gb) was kinda exposed to a lot of dust in the last few weeks and stops reading blu ray discs after a few seconds. I surfed the net thouroughly and came up with two solutions. One is to get a blu ray lens cleaner (not avaiable here anywhere, and uses some kinda wind tunnel effect) or open it up myself and clean it (plenty of good videos to do this on youtube).

Why not sony support you ask!? Now, the warranty has expired long back, and the solution given by sony showroom and croma was to return it and get a brand new PS3 slim for 50% of the cost, which sounds ridiculous. Apparantly, sony service will not bother to clean the lens. I dont want to lose my beautiful old PS3 for a crappy looking new slim version, not that I'm willing to pay the 50% anyway.

Sounds ridiculous right !? Have any of you guys ever cleaned your blu ray players or PS3's ? Please let me know if there's a sane solution to this...

Re: Playstation 3 / Blu Ray Lens Cleaning !?

Not with PS3 but with I have done this with Pioneer DVD player.

I thought my daughter has scratched DVDs we freqently play and hence they werent playing in the DVD player. Later I found that even new /unscratched DVDs werent playing.

The DVD player could play CDs /VCDs but not DVDs. So i googled and found that this could be due to the DVD laser getting weaker and there is a possibility of adjustments within the player to increase its strength and has nothing to do with cleaning the lens.

So I opened it but did not find any such thing. Disappointed by the players incapability I thought let me clean the lens as I had anyways opened it. So I did it with a soft clean cloth (dont know if this is the right way) and DVDs started playing right after! Sometimes googling does not work!

So I believe you can give it a try and anyways its outside warranty
