R22 manufacture will stop in 2015.
Just when a unit bought in 2013 is likely to start needing out-of-warranty service and top-ups. Looks like R22 is a dead-end purchase now.

I had been wondering, but was feeling lazy to page back through the thread to where it was last discussed. Thanks for your post

R22 will not be outlawed till 2022, only no production after 2015. I am not aware of any R410A Window Units yet! Only splits are switching in a big way.

Got the unit day before yesterday. A couple of chaps came in the evening to see the site (my old Voltas + Videocon 2TR).They came yesterday and managed to connect it up. Only one stupidity. They brought a kit with 15mm tube for return while 12mm was required. So they ended up brazing small lengths of of 1/2" pipe at both ends. More important I have a 1-14" pipe going from the room to the roof, so they used up some precious read estate. A second goof up comes later.

Seems that there is a jugaad for connecting power from the indoor unit to the outdoor unit using a single 4-core wire even though it is supposed to come to the outdoor by a 3-core wire and then go down through a 4-core wire. They were unable to get the unit to work. In fact they pulled out the old 3-core wire. Today the expert came, promptly added the 3-core wire and it started. It is very quiet when compared to the older unit (2011 vintage). Performance will really be known only in summer.

A killer price no doubt but do you have installation and long term maintenance sorted out. Remember with a white good you are looking at a decade, and a split does need attention once in awhile.

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

Thats a very valid point, esp considering my experience with Hitachi where you are left to mercy of local dealer and untrained staff. I am told that Sharp has their own call center and they manage the support though end person/technician may still come from local support.

Do you or anyone else have a view/expereince of Sharp support in India.

Regards

Vivek

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

Just wondering why there is no window air-conditioner with inverter technology? To my mind that would be perfect from a user point of view toward getting a more efficient cooling solution with less burden on energy consumption. If the DC inverter can be put in split airconditioners or refrigerators then why not on window units? Costwise also it should be a minimum of Rs. 5000 cheaper than corresponding split ac units.

Excellent question. I will love to see R410A Inverter Window units. Let us watch and wait. All the emphasis at the moment is on Splits!

I've learnt this the hard way and now insist that I get the dealers senior installer else I don't allow the installation to proceed. I've had many goof ups one which was leaking water inside the wall and it spoilt the wooden frame of my balcony window. Another time one moron drilled holes for the indoor panel and then realized that the next room wall was behind and it cannot be fitted in that location...this after I enquired how many installations he had done which got him all riled up...

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

I am looking for the quietest window AC. Daikin, famed for quiet operation, does not seem to have window ACs. What options do I have? Capacity desired is 1 ton, budget is about Rs.25k.

Quietest window unit Hitachi Quadracool TM, the one with individual fan motors for the evaporator and the condensor.

Otherwise Whirlpool or O'General.

Window AC will never be as quiet as the split, simply because the compressor is next to the fan and in every AC I have seen, it does make some noise. (I have the Quadracool in my bedroom)

Thanks khoj for the suggestion. It a bit expensive and over my budget, being quoted at 27k+ in online stores.

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

Of course the Window units will not be as silent as the splits but then the QuadTM is indeed a very silent machine, the plain quadricool is like any other window unit.

Well it is winters and you would do well to locate a dealer holding stocks and negotiate with them. Try Anamika Enterprises in Chittaranjan Park Market II. They usually have largish stocks.

General will be pricey too and usually is noisier on account of the faster fan speed. Try one of the chain stores like Vijay sales or Jumbo you may find Westinghouse units. I did see some stocks last season. Made in China to WH specs, they were decently priced and with official warranty etc.

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

finally bought - http://www.samsung.com/in/consumer/h...r/AS183BNFNSTL 5 units. Hoping it would be good experience.

The reason I bought it
1. Virus doctor i.e. ioniser
2. Full feature filter
3. Decent price of 29k with standard installation free.
4. Decent power consumption eer 3.1
5. Hopefully better support network then Sharp, they were not very responsive even for sale. Their 24*7 support phone never connects :(
