How do I check MMI maps? I dont have them with me. However even if it has details, its way to expensive and makes little sense. Also I had spoken to the Satguide customer care, they said we need to tell them which all area is missing on the maps so that they can cover in next update. So I plan to look around all places and give them a list, hope they include before I opt for map upgrades.

Yeah what i meant was, which Highways out of Bangalore have you taken?
As DerAlte said, roads off of Bangalore - Magadi and Bangalore - Mysore highways are not mapped well. And thats the case with both satguide and mmi.

You can check MMI map coverage here
MapmyIndia - maps, directions, and local search across India - just search, print and go!

It has second best coverage after google.

I am still trying to figure out if yahoo maps can be imported into the GPS units, then highways routes will be sorted out, since yahoo maps are amazing at the level of detail. Even Google maps don't come close to that.

I am sure on that Amit. I have taken the Bangalore-Mysore many times. And it fully mapped. Do you have latest updated one? But for the Mysore section, even when I bought last year (Dec 2009) it was fully Mapped.

I went to Munnar/Kumarakom. It was almost fully mapped (Bangalore/Bhavani/Perindurai/Kangeyam/Dharapuram/Udumalpet/Munnar)
Then:

- Munnar/Kumarakom
- Kumarakom/Ernakulam/Trichur/Guruvayur/Nilambur/Mysore

All these were mapped very well except for some stretches Nilambur, where it did not show any maps.

TVMailai/Pondicherry section, Bangalore-Madras and inside Madras etc are also well tracked.

I have not tried Magadi though.

But how do we define its utility? If you need some thing which is mobile, then lap top would go out of the window. You dont want to keep a laptop open for a full drive time.

As to the phone, I know how the set up works, but was not sure if it would be easy to manage.

Are there any other usage modes that we are talking off?

The GPS may take a long time to get a fix on the mobile - varies. I find it a pain on my Nokia 5230, my son is happy on his htc Touch

Just hold the phone outside the window to get faster fix.
More OTS (open to sky) - Less TTFF (time to first fix).
Try to get the fix before you start moving. TTFF will be more when you are moving.

Tried it all. In Ladakh it was taking 10 minutes + for the initial fix! My son drove all over Bangalore using Google Maps and his htc!

Hey, I too got the same message, however was not able to locate anything of this kind on their website. Wanted to undertand the mechanism.
1. Will GPRS be required for maps(googlemaps)? If yes then I have faced lot of problem accessing gprs out of home networks.

2. OR they will provide maps, not sure if my phone [HTC Touch] has any application to navigate custom maps.

Any thoughts BHPians?

I checked 2-3 times yesterday in my 5230 and it took around 3 mins when stationary and ~5mins while moving.
Ensure that the GPS antenna area is not covered while using GPS.
Check out the location of the antenna:

Wow, B'lore seems to be expensive. I bought the Moov 560 for 14K in Gurgaon!! No picture viewer, but everything else you mentioned, with add ons of BT and 4.7" screen, but battery life is bad.

Paid 13K, Moov 300 has stuff like video player, mp3 player and picture viewer [that I didn't really need]. Mainly, it has a nice 4.3" display, which is great for navigation, compared to any 3.5".

Edit: SatGuide, as a company, are extremely customer focused and friendly, willing to go any lengths to please. This has been my experience. For now, I'd rate them 5 *****s.

Cheers
