Thank you geeta for posting the additional information and link.

There is a FAQ (PDF) on the User Documents tab of that page which explains the service in detail.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

I am looking to buy a GPS navigation for my car. I already have the Iphone 4, is it possible to use this as a device by only buying maps from a provider? If so, how good is this and which map providers are good for Maharashtra?

Satguide sent me micro sd card. It had 2 files. One is .img file and the other is .unl (I think its key file) file. I copied both these files to the garmin device. Still I get this error.

I actually copied the files to the device. The reason is they gave me in micro sd. I copied the files to my computer an then copied the same to the device. Is this an issue?

You can purchase maps from MAPMYINDIA(MMI),and use the iphone as a full fledged navigation device.

Yes that is the issue. You need to plug-in the micro SD card to unit.

It usually comes with SD adapter, otherwise you can buy it for 50 - 100 Rs from market.

Maps are tied to the ID of particular card and wont work if copied to any other card. This is done via a UNL file that is in the same directory as maps.

Oh. I see the issue now. I will try to do this again with sd adapter and see how this goes. Thank you netfreak.

Yup, I agree with netfreak. This is the issue. The unl file is tied to the SD card ID. you cannot copy the unl file to your device along with map and expect it to work. you have to use the same microSD card which was sent buy satguide.

Same dilemma as yours, I have an iPhone 3GS and would like to make use of its GPS capabilities. Few questions:

1) Does using GPS with maps from MMI use any data connection?
2) Do I have to buy several maps or just one for the country?
3) How accurate is Map My India?

I have the same problem.
I have Garmin and bought a Satguide map. But nowadays the map simply goes off.. it will be showing the route of highway/city and suddenly shows i am going nowhere. sometime with message - route cannot be calculated.

I checked with satguide and they gave me a free upgrade of maps. but when i try to put it on the SD card they gave it is write protected and i put it on another SD card it complains cannot unlock maps. I wrote to them and no response. So basically struck and not using the GPS anymore..

Also I heard Garmin has come up with their own maps and it can bought and costs some 3500. Anyone tried that ?

Garmin's maps (called City Navigator I think) is not that good. Coverage of # cities is less.
The write-protect is a physical switch (remember old floppys?!). You can pull it up and you would be able to copy.

1.MMI provides offline maps , so no data to be downloaded.
2.MMI offers separate maps for each state but you can buy all the maps for india and they are included in a single file.
3. MMI maps are pretty good and provide good detail, but just remember that this is india and we cannot depend completely on GPS here. For the cities and the main roads, the maps are quite good. However, they are not as quite accurate when it comes to smaller roads in rural areas. Also, the route calculation sometimes picks the longest round about route instead of picking the shortest route.

I'm looking for a GPS+Bluetooth setup for an Optra Magnum under 10,000 rupees. Which one should I go for? A touch screen unit is preferred. Would free upgrades be offered as well?

If your SD card is write protected just move the "write protect slot" on the card. ITs a physical switch on the SD card.
