Team-BHP - How to ADD a Hard Disk partition in Vista

Not sure is it works on Vista. There is an option in PM to create a bootable disk (once its installed).

So, you can install it on some PC Running XP and then create this boot disk (CD).

Boot from this CD and then you can create extended partitions (by expanding existing partition and then splitting it into two).

Okay... Extended partition - will this be under the main partition - like a folder?

What are the possible downsides of having a 200GB C Drive?

I have had more than a dozen ppl telling me that this partition bizz is all passe' - as in should the disk go wrong one can always toss it into a USB mount and dig our data etc etc.

Any views folks??

I think only downside of 200 GB partition, that affects day to day use is difficulty in managing data. I find things easier to manage if partitions are earmarked for use like Music/Work/Data/Snaps.

The guy who comes to do the installation will just do that and make sure you have received what you ordered. In fact, he is supposed to open the pack.

I was in the same boat as you regarding the 250GB HDD's partitioning in my 1525. While ordering, there was an option of choosing for a smaller C partition, but that was costing extra and so did not go for it.

I was new to Vista and the shrinking and creating a new partition did not work, though shrinking was possible.

I left it at that. I still have not started using it as I am yet to bring it to my old lap top's state regarding the programs etc.

By the way, if you have more than two partitions, the Dell Media direct won't work, according to the technician who came here. I was advised to talk to their support help line regarding the partitioning and that they would hand hold me through the process. I am a little hesitant at telephonic help and resigned to the fact that I have to use it a single partition, though I am comfortable with 4 partitions until now.

You could do that, I guess. Or you can always start from scratch. In this case your recovery partition goes for a toss and I was told that that can be created only in the factory.

Its way cheap of them - why should you charge more for just creating a partition:Frustrati - I am sure its an automated process at these factories - just plug the system into the network and the whole image or whatever is most likely dumped one shot. I doubt if it even requires a person on standby - maybe one for an entire batch to kinda eyeball for any system that stalls.

Just realized, that it crashed with Vista and there is data loss.

Do this:
Right Click on Computer and click on Manage
On the left pane, go to Storage and click on Disk management.
Right click on the partition you want to modify and then select shrink volume.

This has worked on Vista. I have personally done this.
