Well i wanted to post this in the announcement section but did not have the permission to do so!, mods if this helps others please do put this thread in the appropriate section!

well any photo shot with more than 2MP camera is bound to have a lot of pixels, one way to resize them is using MS PAINT!

here is how you do it!

right click the image and with the help of OPEN WITH option just open it in MS PAINT,
then in on the top you have the file,edit,view,image colors and help!. now select the image option a box will drop with options like flip/rotate, stretch/skew, invert colors ETC, now you need to select the stretch/skew option!

now there will be the boxes for entering the required percentage you need to select for the stretching and skewing separately!

you only need to use the stretching option not the skewing mind you! once you reduce the figures for the skewing the image cannot return to what it was before SO I ALWAYS SUGGEST YOU KEEP THE COPY OF THE ORIGINAL IMAGE BEFORE TRYING THIS!,

now i suggest that you reduce the horizontal and the vertical percentages simultaneously to 90% then save the image and check for the memory of the image if still its more then try reducing it in the denominations of 10% till you reach the required resolution/size!, the horizontal and vertical have to be simultaneously to maintain the proportion, otherwise the image becomes stretchy either horizontally or vertically!

PS:note that images with once the pixels and sizes reduced will not have the kind of clarity before un-stretching so please do keep a copy of them!

by far this is the easiest way i found to manage/edit the pics shot by my sony cybershot6.0!

imo - first > it is better to crop parts of a particular pic that are not required - this will reduce the image size as well - BUT will retain the same clarity.

Try downloading the 'MS image resizer tool for win xp', its as simple as resizing with a right click the image --> select resize

In case you have microsoft office installed, it comes with MS office picture manager pre-installed.
In case you have lots of pics to resize u can do them simply in the following steps:
1. right click on one of the images in the folder , select open with Microsoft office picture manager.
2. switch to thumbnail view and select all the images u wanna resize.
3. Press edit and a side menu opens up.
4. chose compress pictures.
5. Choose the file size (document ,web page, email).
6. ok and save.

P.S. Be sure to do this after u make a copy of the folder as the pics saved once to the new size can't be restored to original size once u "OK" it

Control+R is the keyboard shortcut to Resize/resample the image.

Is this the best tool you can get.
Consider a 2MP picture, which is 1600 by 1200 and occupies about 0.9mb, reduce it to 1024 by 768. Now the resized picture occupies just about 70kb, no losses in quality.

Else, go for irfanview.

Been using Irfanview for ages now. Excellent software.

Here is how you can do it on GIMP. GIMP is available for both Linux and Windows, and has fairly advanced image editing capabalities. It is approximately 25 MB download for Windows last time I checked Windows - some 7 or 8 years back.

First, open Gimp, open the file you want to edit and use the "File > Save As" option to create a new file. This is particularly useful when your camera names files something like DSC000420.JPG. MyShinyNewCar.jpg is a more convenient name to work on.

Next, right click on the image, select "Image > Scale Image". In the dialog, select the unit you want to work on sticking to pixels is a good idea. A 450 pixels wide image occupies approximately 2/3 of most 15 inch CRT screens or 1024 Pixel LCD - most common in India. So, enter 450 in the first field (Width field), and hit the tab key. The program will choose the height for you (you can choose that this does not happen but you can easily figure out how to do that - left to you as homework ;-) ).

Now, save the image, and upload!!!

it's not that simple. I am not sure how this tool does it, but in irfanview you can select level of compression. on lowest level (lossy) u can get small size (70kb), on highest level you can end up almost at the same size you started with (900kb). JPEG is a very smart format, use it with caution and it will help you a lot.

BMP is fixed size for a fixed number of pixels. straight forward. no compression. 3 bytes (or more) per pixel. which makes me think that's the best level of information one could have. Now could somebody explain to me what other formats (costlier than BMP) offer in addition to this?

Pretty simple and easy to use. Select the picture, the output size and the destination directory - and hit convert.
