LOL agreed with the point that you may be trying to make with respect to the actual comparison with a DSLR.

But, first of all I questioned who & why would someone use such high zoom.
The lens that you have shown looks like telephoto L series Canon lens. This would be used mostly in professional photography of a sporting event or by a wildlife photographer. I can't imagine a non professional ever needing so much zoom! (Unless one plans to cover such a need)

Second was that a super zoom has almost as much size as a DSLR with say pancake lens.

Travel zoom offers compact size / form factor with about 20X zoom which is more than sufficient and vastly more convenient.

In my honest opinion (coming from experience) - the only time when I used 16X of my previous camera was when I wanted to make the sun / moon appear quite large with respect to the subject.

Today when I see all my photos (even the ones where I wanted to capture that top balcony on the Qutub Minar), most of the photos need about 24-120 (about 5X) or say 25-150 (6x) zoom.

Yes, this seems too much. As you mentioned, 18 - 150-ish range should be sufficient for general usage.

However, 1700mm at 15k sure looks tempting

These are completely custom made by Canon on order. And they can only make two lenses a year

Quote:
Why such a long lead time? For one reason, it takes nearly a year to grow fluorite crystals large enough to be ground and polished for use in this lens. In addition, the lens is "virtually hand-made".

I have S200 from Amazon purchased a few days ago. Also using S90 for past 3 years.

S200 has DIGIC4 processor, whereas S90 had DIGIC3. The hardware is similar, but the focus feels faster, zoom smoother (and also longer, now at 5x as compared to 3.8x in S90.) S200 is even slightly slimmer than S95, which itself fits in my jeans pocket.

However, the quality has taken bit hit. By itself, S200 is good. But when I compare it with S90, I feel S90 has better quality. Metal body, spring action battery compartment (as compared to flimsy manual battery compartment in S200), motorized flash (vs manual flash in S200), general feel in hand.

However, I am still keeping S200 simply because the Image quality seems higher than S90. In fact, it complements nicely and perfectly to a DSLR even.

S200 should work out great - especially with the fast lens at the wide end!

Hello there,

Been using my S200 for five days now.

The low light performance is awesome, particularly at wide angle.

I am very pleased with the overall package.

Though the angle could be wider on Zoom.

But giving five stars to it.

Fantastic!
Not trying to induce buyer's remorse to you, but just asking why did you not go for the Nikon P340?
(ooops I forgot that you got S200 at steal price on a deal)

All this gyan can easily be obtained in a few hours on the web.

Then ask here. Surely the knowledgeable folks here will help you.

Happy searching.
Hello. Thanks for that. I did not get that camera. I did some research and found out that there are some travel zooms that deliver way better quality at the same price. Will get something different in a week or so.

You mean:
1. better image quality (sometimes abbreviated as IQ) than Sony H400
2. similar price around Rs 10500

Which travel zooms?

Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

Was looking around for a travel zoom and did my research online and read the reviews and comparisons. Budget is around 15K and hence shortlisted the following based on the reviews:
1. Coolpix S9700
2. Powershot SX700
3. Lumix TZ60

Walked into reliance yesterday and played around with the S9700 & SX700. Tried zooming out to max and focusing on objects and what I found is that the AF on coolpix takes quiet sometime when compared to the powershot. Also looks like I might have to bump up by budget to 18K, which means it is almost in the Bridge range and the Lumix FZ70 looks really good.

The primary reason for looking at travel zoom is for some quick birding/wildlife pics apart from the normal travels pics.

Need help with understanding how the pics actually look when taken at a 20x or 30x zoom. if anyone can share links of pics taken using similar cams with high zoom, it would help a lot.

Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

I have posted a thread at jjmehta forum, and I have decided to post the same here:
http://www.jjmehta.com/forum/index.php?topic=38601.0

PRICE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CANON-S and NIKON-P
Can anyone explain how this works?

Almost the same specs. Almost the same lens. Almost the same sensor.
Therefore nearly same Image Quality.

Canon S120 was not even brought to India (which actually has a comparable sensor to P340).
Canon S110 retails for Rs 28K (though I can't find it anymore in Canon India website)
Nikon P340 retails for Rs 19K

to top it Canon S200 retails for Rs 20K but this has sensor of previous generation - I guess Canon S95

The same story was repeated earlier too when Canon S100/110 and Nikon P330 were there.

With nearly a 10K of difference Canon's sales should've plummeted by now. (And price corrected)

Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

^^^ Canon S110 costs some 11-12k in India Amazon site. A worthy camera for low light performance. Even the MRP is <20k, I don't know where you got the 28 k figure. S90 was costing 27k, and it feels great in hand as compared to S110, who has got a marginally better performance than S90.

Hello,

We purchased Canon S200 from Amazon.in for 11979/- a month back.

Now the offer is no more there.

Nikons P330 and P340 have better specs at lesser cost.

Why anyone will buy S200 now beats me.

Your point is very valid.

Same point being made by alpha1 in this post.
