I concur with the Fujifilm S100fs. Its a very very nice camera with excellent image quality which rivals even DSLRs

The Fuji has a pretty large sensor for a non DSLR, and 100% crops upto ISO 400 are comparable to most common DSLRs.

Consider this, I got Udupi's most well known electronics dealer:

Me: Ok, I am looking for an Ultra compact camera with IS and at least 28mm wide.
Camera Desk Guy: Sorry, we only have Canon, Nikon, Sony and Olympus.
Me: OoooKaaay, can you pass me the brouchure.

Anyway, I didn't find anything good.

So I can't buy locally, they stock really bad cameras and they don't know it. Is there a reliable camera shop in India that would ship camera by courier?

Thanks for excellant replies Team, I appreciate it.

The reason why I am looking for new best camera is my present S7000 fuji has CCD issue result vertical line in most of the snaps. I am not sure if it can be repaired but still last week I gave it for service to one of the best service center and I know them through my friend.

I checked with FotoCircle guy he says next week 8100fd and S100fs is expected. I guess this is in the range of 25,000/-. Please note that Fuji has bad marketing and service in india. But still I need Fuji if I am buying Prosumer camera. If I am buying DSLR then it has to be Nikon or Canoon. Thats the plan after exploring many cameras.

Samurai I really doubt If we can trust someone who would send the way you wanted. I found almost all shops are careless and they try to cheat.

If I find S100fs I will let you know. Today I am thinking to explore more by visiting shops.

Digital Camera Mumbai, Dealers Digital Camera India, Mumbai he has some information and looks like he would sell the cameras anywhere in India.

Regards,

Ravi.

Samurai, jjmehta is supposed to be good.
Alternatively you can ask someone in blr to purchase your fav model, and then you can get it from there

Today I roamed (without having Lunch because it took too much of time including 3 hours wastage my Matiz starting problem for silly loose contact in fuse box) around 6 hours with my friend in Bangalore to check with all sorts of Digital cameras, I realized finePix S100fs (I think would cost 22,000+) is the best model I would buy.

Jayesh has assured me he would get in in couple of weeks time. He also told me he has ordered FinePix 8100fd (14,000+ cost) as well, my friend might buy that one.

I have decided to stay away from DSLR cameras for now.

Thanks and Regards,

Ravi.

Finally some myth busting about mega pixels.

Pixel Density: when Moore is less: Digital Photography Review

My 3 cameras have following pixel density:
Olympus E3 - 4MP/cm²
Olympus E500 - 3 MP/cm²
Sony F717 -8 MP/cm²

Ravi, though I am not a photography expert, I was wondering why you did not consider the Olympus SP-570UZ: 20X Zoom + Wide Angle (26-520mm), Dual IS, RAW format support, manual zoom control (very useful), External Flash support etc? It is cheaper than the Fujifilm S100sf by atleast Rs.5,000!

Compare the pixel density of Olympus SP-570UZ vs finePix S100fs. It is 36MP/cm2 vs 20MP/cm2. Besides, 20x will be bad.

Is this really noticeable or does it really matter unless we go for poster size prints?

It will be noticeable with high ISO. For example in P&S even at ISO 400 you will get lousy shots.
However if you shoot ISO 80 or so, you can get poster size prints without any issues.

Ravi, I'd say that's a damn good price man! In Delhi, I was told that it would be in excess of 25k......the Company guy mentioned "close to 30k but a good discount available".

Do let us know what the final price works out to should you buy it

Another excellent camera is the Sony DSC-R1. If you are not a telephoto shooter this camera has an excellent wide angle lens. The quality rivals that of Canon L lenses, and in most reviews it was remarked that if you got a 24-110mm lens from Nikon/Canon etc., which had a quality like this lens, it would cost you 2000$ just for the lens.

The sensor on my Sony F-717 is 2/3" or 8 MP/cm² which is excellent even by Fuji standard. Why did Sony stop making excellent prosumer cameras?

1. Sony F717 is old tech
2. R1 is actually a APS-C sized sensor, same pixel density as the 40D etc.,
And thirdly they stopped because most manufacturers hopped on the MP bandwagon.
Sony therefore went to DSLRs.
For example the A700 is a masterpiece if you look at the sensor.
