aah that rings a bell. Any idea why Google gave up on it?

I believe the market was not ready for it back then. The same way Meta was early for the VR market few years back. Also colleague used to charge it very frequently back then. How's the battery life on these wayfarers ?

PS: Google up "glass holes" without the spacing

During my travel with on and off recording scenic routes, it lasted about 3 - 4 hours I think. Hard to define since it may vary depending on whether you're using it as a music device / for calls / for photos and videos. TBH, any calls that involve zoom, teams etc where files are being shared, I still use my ipad and therefore with it, my airpods.

Hahaha - sums it up perfectly! Like most other tech it needs to be used appropriately in public as well as private social settings.

Its even more important with this sort of tech of course - someone using a smartphone for viewing reels or listening to music on loudspeaker its just annoying, whereas here if someone is evidently recording you in a gathering its ranging from invasive to plain creepy.

On a funny sidenote, if I'm taking a call using the glasses, I often just hold the phone up high and in plain sight clearly indicating I'm using it - else you look plain mad just talking into thin air without even a phone in sight.

Thanks for the review; this gadget looks so ungadgety. However, as with all new technical innovations, there are two invariable sides to it: the recce carried out by the perpetrator before the New Orleans Attack being a case in point.

Indeed. I just read about this as well yesterday. Wonder if there might be some immediate knee jerk reaction to impose limitations or bans, not sure. I think in India, even drones require some sort of registration for similar security concerns and I recall at one point even Google had its share of security or other issues when it originally wanted to launch its street view functionality in India.

Such incidents definitely muddy the waters for such new tech, aside from of course the fundamental privacy concerns and the general invasiveness they bring to even day to day life.

I don’t know what brand these are but the ‘use sensibly’ issues remain the same.

Man detained for surreptitious use of a specs camera in a high security temple area where photos are not allowed. A fellow Mod sent me this earlier today.

You wont believe this, but this thread flashed to mind almost immediately when I saw this headline on Pilot yesterday, and indeed the same device was the culprit. Its specimens like these who are the "cork in the bottle", so to speak regarding new tech trialling in real life. They stand a great chance being banned now, atleast at Ayodhya and Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, the temples with the tightest security cover.

Nice review. Thanks for sharing. Had not heard about this before. Have someone coming from the US and am debating to buy it. One clarification: I am interested in buying the transition lens. I do have a 1.5 Reading power too. I assume that the default transition lens (or clear lens) are plains ones without any power? If that is the case, will they accept a prescription from India to indicate the reading power?

Or is it easier to get the basic clear ones as you did and switch to a transition + reading lens here?

I am not sure about what Meta can do on this front since I didn’t have the time to figure this out anyway.

I bought the basic 299$ version and got a transition lens with my progressive reading glasses made over here and replaced the basic clear lens that came with the glasses. This to my mind was the simplest approach since it also enabled me to get my progressive lens made as per my exact preference.

Awesome review thanks. Were you comfortable giving this to your optician? I plan to bring one - but worried the optician might break something in there. Which optician did you go to, if you don’t mind sharing?

Thank you.

I sent it to Vision 2020 in Bandra (Mumbai) as I am aware that establishment has worked on a few glasses before mine. In fact the owner himself uses a pair of these so he’s made prescription glasses for himself too.

I reckon any good quality optician should be able to manage replacement lenses with normal degree of care while handling.

Cheers.

Thanks so much! Should get one then. Does the specific feature where you look at something and ask what it is work in India?

No that doesn’t work as of now at least. Not sure if / when that might change.

This feature is currently available in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. To enable this feature when setting up your device, please use the VPN of one of these countries.

Thanks. Do I need to be continuously connected to the VPN?
