Samsung One UI 6.1 update ruined my S22 Ultra | Samsung refuses to solve the issue after 1.5 months

Hi Team,

I see a lot of folks here on teambhp who are into gadgets and phones, not just as a mode of communications but as something we adore and like using too for its camera, features and the tech that brings.

Same with me, I am a tech geek and after many years of using simple phones, in 2022 October, got myself a nice phone aka Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. It worked like a charm for all this while until Samsung released an update in May 2024 with Android 14 and One UI 6.1, I updated it around first week and June and after a few days things started going south.

1) Phone started lagging big time
2) Suddenly restarts on its own, sometimes the restart loop stays till 2 restarts until it starts working
3) Whatsapp stopped backing up to Google drive, infact I am glad I had backed up a few days before this update, once it even said need to restore chats and I lost a couple of days worth of chats

Surfing through this issue on the web, I came across many forums filled with users who are complaining of the following with this update.

1) Pink/Green line starting to appear on the phone
2) Continuous boot loop with no startup
3) Heating and massive slowing down
4) Motherboards and batteries being replaced in western countries of people who are complaining

This update includes the S21, S22, S23 and S24 series along with a few other Samsung models.

Have anyone of you guys updated to the latest Samsung update and faced these issues?

Thought of starting this thread to also warn folks who havent updated, to not update the samsung with the may release

Samsung and Android lover since decades. Learned a long time back to never use Samsung updates. Every update breaks something.

My Flip3 is working like a charm without updates. Zero bugs

I've been using S23 Ultra (Snapdragon) (12GB & 512GB) for almost a year now and haven't face any issues except heating issues / thermal throttling which are native to Samsung anyways. This issue was present in my S20+ 5G as well (Exynos).

There's this odd camera issue I've noticed where it takes blurry pictures but it happens very very rarely.

I haven't faced any of the aforementioned issues thankfully and no bugs at all, I mean literally none. Having said that, I use the 65W charger with Duracell fast charging cable bought from Amazon India. I don't know if that plays a part in the phone's longevity.

Moreover, I've dropped my phone innumerable times and the build quality is insanely good despite it only having a simple silicon back cover (2.5$ from TEMU) and no tempered glass.

I have attached a picture of my current software version which is the latest update available in Australia.

Golden Rule: Hard reset after any major OS update solves all issues. It doesn't matter what device it is or what it is running. Yes, it will take time, but it is worth the effort.

I have started to notice my 4 month old S24 somehow slow down a bit after the latest updat, especially when handling multiple apps running. I dont have any games or consume video content except while playing YT videos, that too occasionally. I never had this issue in my earlier S21 Ultra.

These days, I feel every customer is treated as a beta tester and it is precisely the reason why I have chosen to stick with the stable ROM that came with the device (unless some serious vulnerability is discovered).

I usually wait for a few weeks and check online reports for the stability of the new version before going forward with the update, if needed.

Between visiting the service centre to fix hardware damage resulting from an update, and living without some 'minor improvements', I'd choose the latter.

My Flip 5 has this update and no issues at all. Flip series has always been slammed for poor battery life but mine has been a excellent and this latest update made no difference.

Don't want to sound like a fan boy but I have almost never had any issues with any update for last 10 years across multiple S and Z series phones - on the other hand Google Pixels (multiple models starting Pixel 5) always had issues either right out of the box or after major update.

It's ironic but Android on Samsung feels more robust than Android on Pixel despite all the crap Samsung puts on it :S

Belive your phone is on exynos? Because, my SnapDragon chip is working fine with the latest update 6.1 on S22 Ultra.

Agree 6.1 brought in a lot of bugs with it. Reason I say this because, my phone was lag free until on the first update of 6.1. However, the recent patch kind of introduced few bugs causing stutters randomly. However, it kind of stabilizes on its own.

Try doing a hard factory reset and see if situation improves!

I have the same update on my 3 month old Samsung A55. The only minor issue In sometimes face is the "back" key not working in Google Maps. Otherwise, the phone works fine.

Thanks for the warning. I was just about to download and install the same. BTW, is your phone running a Snapdragon / Exynos chip ?

I've seen random stutters in video playback while using VLC, even after toggling most settings. Does it happen in your device ?

And here I was, devastated that Apple will not be including AI in my 6 months old and still the latest model in the market iPhone 15 because they knowingly cheaped out on RAM (The 15 series otherwise has more than capable NPU, which is faster than the M1 series they will be supporting so the limiting factor is the RAM which they knowingly put in despite knowing it will not support AI which they will introduce in 6 months time).

I had started the process of replacing each and every one of Apple devices in my family (of which there are a lot) because of this extreme injustice and getting away by them, I had zeroed on Samsung Galaxy S24 series (most likely Ultra) to be my next phone for years to come and was glad they offered AI features to even 3 year old devices but this thread has shaken my belief on Samsung as well, it is the same Samsung then from my previous devices (Galaxy S3 and S8) and doesn't seem to have changed, I had a sub par experience with performance of my S8, it slowed down considerably after 1st major update and became slower than an entry level phone after the 2nd one and eventually sold off after 2 years and few months.

Pixel series has its own problems and my cousin keeps complaining of Bugs in his 7 pro and is planning to sell it off, not to mention its sub par processor performance which is just uncompetitive.

No idea what phone I will buy then, but the iPhone and all the Apple products I own will surely go in the coming months.

I have stopped buying flagship after an horrible experience with the 512 GB Note9; A software update left the phone with a burnt display with the brand just washing its hands off claiming out of warranty and holds no responsibility. Since then, would wait for a few weeks before choosing to update the software.

The Apple doesn't fall too far from the tree either; had 2 bitter experiences with the devices warming up during charging and data usage after software updates.

re: Samsung One UI 6.1 update ruined my S22 Ultra | Samsung refuses to solve the issue after 1.5 months

Bought a new Galaxy S23 256gb base variant a month ago for ₹45k directly from Samsung online shop. Out of the box, the hardware was top notch with no apparent defects (except the power button felt a bit wobbly) and the finishing felt very premium overall. Initially, it ran One UI 6.0 but was continuously warm at 37 to 40 C which was due to some optimisation going on. I then switched it to "Light" performance profile until it stabilised and the average temps came down to 35 to 37 C with 6hrs SOT battery life (85% to 20%) during normal usage.

The camera also initially performed very well as expected from a flagship. I then received a notification after a few days to update to One UI 6.1 which I resisted for some time until it started nagging me badly with annoying notifications which can't be disabled easily. To avoid the notifications and auto update, I used ADB to disable "com.wssyncmldm" which is Samsung's auto update download manager and the annoying notifications thankfully stopped.

Now everything was working well until I received a notification to update the default camera app from "Galaxy Store" for "improved" camera performance. Thinking it will actually improve the image processing, I updated the stock camera app. Alas, the camera performance got degraded and photos started appearing blurry with lack of details especially when taken in low light. The photos felt even worse than those taken by a 5 yr old mid tier phone I had.

I called Samsung support and they used the "Smart Tutor" app to remotely control the phone and diagnose the issue. They did the standard troubleshooting steps like reset settings, clear cache of camera app and other related system services. They even snapped trial photos on call to realise it was actually taking bad quality photos. I finally asked them to uninstall the update which spoilt it and they said it can't be done without a factory reset!

I told them that sneakily spoiling a good camera with a seemingly harmless app update is totally unacceptable. They felt very sorry, apologised and opined that even their A series phones are taking better photos right now. They then asked me to file an error report along with the system logs and sample photos using the Samsung members app, only to receive the standard response that they will take time to technically analyse it and will respond soon. Meanwhile, I took my new S23 on a trip to Thailand and clicked photos with oversaturated colors and poor clarity compared to my friend's iPhone 13 which took amazingly good pics!

re: Samsung One UI 6.1 update ruined my S22 Ultra | Samsung refuses to solve the issue after 1.5 months

Not related to Samsung however I have been following a thumb rule for all the major Android OS updates after I faced issues in my OnePlus 6 by updating it from Android 11 to 12, once a new updated is released by OEM, wait for sufficient users to upgrade there phones and depending upon there feedback, you can decide whether you want to upgrade your phone to latest version or not. There are pros and cons to this approach. The highest pro would be that you are already running a stable build and there are no bugs in your current version. Cons would be you will be missing out on latest features associated with new version and latest monthly security patches. I am okay with this tradeoff so I only update when initial bugs have been ironed out.

re: Samsung One UI 6.1 update ruined my S22 Ultra | Samsung refuses to solve the issue after 1.5 months

I spent days reading through Samsung's official handle and the amount of complains after the one UI update is staggering.

Most of them are complaining of green line after UI 6.1 update, phone going into reboot loop, crashes, heat and massively slowing down, here is the link of anyone who wants to check out.

https://x.com/SamsungIndia

To give you guys an update. I took the phone to the Samsung Service station here in Ghatkopar East and they said 'they had never heard of this issue', what blatant lies as the entire internet including their own members forum is filled with people complaining of similar issues. He told me point blank 'While updating, if phone is bricked, not our fault', I just told him if my phone is bricked, I will take this up from LinkedIn to twitter to a consumer forum until you guys sort this out'.

He gave me the phone back after a reset and software update to the same version and as soon as it came in my hand, it restarted right in front of him. He took it in his hand after a restart and the phone was laggy as hell. I told him, its not fixed and I will complain. He gave me the job sheet number and told me not to pay anything.

I took a spare phone from my office and have been testing the S22Ultra at home by playing games and incrementally installing apps as I don't have the mental capacity to shift to the Ultra again and then something goes wrong.

The Samsung customer care guys are another level of incompetent. The lady on the phone is saying "if due to network issues the update is not installed correctly, then it can happen that the phone behaves like how it behaved in your case'. I asked her 'How is the package compiled completely when its not downloaded completely'? She said nothing and said she has forwarded the complain to the higher ups.

Waiting for a call from them.
