Re: The Keyboard Thread : Pics, advice, recommendations

I don't use an extra keyboard for my personal laptop at home, as I don't have too much of Work From Home situation.

But at the office I recently switched from a mechanical keyboard(same as what GTO has posted) to a soft click one, and I found it better than the mechanical one which I felt like the keys were a bit oversized. Both DELL.

Current softkey set-up.

Have been using the full size Magic Keyboard for over a year now and absolutely love it, can hit some super fast typing speeds.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a Mac specific Mechanical Keyboard - preferably with Cherry MX switches?

If you type a lot, there is nothing like mechanical keyboards. You will see key specs like 'cherry mx blue' , 'cherry mx brown' etc. Blue keys are very clicky and make a lot of nose. Not a good option unless you work alone in a room. Brown keys have the same tactile feedback but quiet. I love the brown keys.

I use this bad boy for all my work. There are no key marking on this model. It forced me to lean touch typing. You can get them with key markings too. Down side of mechanical keyboards are the they almost never come wireless. But if you type a lot, they are worth every penny. ( and the extra wire )

Das Keyboard Ultimate.

Re: The Keyboard Thread : Pics, advice, recommendations

This WFH period made me up my keyboard and mouse game too !
Enter Logitech MX Master 3 and Logitech G613

The mechanical keyboard is a machine gun effect to it, once you get used to it there is no turning back. Same for the palm rest on the keyboard, wonder how all these years my hands were hanging in air typing !

MX master 3 is as good as the reviews say, the speed and accuracy is mind boggling. The feature I love the most is side scrolling

That's my setup, laptop is ThinkPad X280 (i7 +16 GB)
Monitor is LG ultrawide 29UB67- This monster eats spreadsheet for breakfast and makes side by side working a breeze

Re: The Keyboard Thread : Pics, advice, recommendations

Got my aunt to bring the corsair RGB Strafe almost 3 years ago. RGB was fun at first, but I dont care much for it anymore, Since then my keyboard sits with its basic red back-lighting. Corsair's CUE software is unnecessarily bloated so I got rid of that as well. The keyboard itself has cherry mx silent switches (Pink) which aren't too bad but I much prefer the feel of the cherry mx reds.

My Backup Keyboard is the mighty TVS Gold with Clickity Clackity Cherry mx Blue switches.

I thought the third monitor would be more practical and this photo is from that time, about a month back.I Put that back in storage as well and plan to set it up at another location where it will take on the roll of a home business PC along with the TVS keyboard.

I have this same one. It was also being used by my organization at our work place. I also got the same thing for working from home.
I find this keyboard to be very good for the price. Keys are large and well spaced out. Also I feel that the soft touch keys are better for continuously using key combinations when programming. Especially when the key combinations involve the ring and little fingers on the left hand.

Haven't used mechanical keyboards except for just experimenting with a colleagues keyboard. Although I liked the tactical feedback, but was a little irritated by the noise of the keys. Don't think I can work with that for long hours.

I have been using a Das Keyboard 4 Professional since 2017. I have replaced the keycaps with a set of Doubleshot PBT ones that I purchased sometime last year. Here are two images of the keyboard.

Re: The Keyboard Thread : Pics, advice, recommendations

I have been using a Keychron K4 with Brown Gateron Switches as my daily driver, my backup keyboard is a TVS Gold.

I heartily recommend Keychron - the keyboards are wired + wireless, haev windows + mac layouts, come in a wide choice of switches, and are comparatively decently priced.

Sadly, the company has gone from using Cherry MX switches to Long Hua, but the keyboards still have that unmistakable 'click' sound.

I need a new keyboard now, and this one is one of the options. So a few days back l had posted a query in the laptop thread (in response to an old post in the same thread about this keyboard), asking about recent experiences, if any, with the current Long Hua switches. Unfortunately it has elicited no response so far, presumably because it is perhaps still too early since the switch to the cheaper Chinese switches in 2017.

I'm intrigued by your choice of the word "sadly" in this context. Was it based on some real data, or just a general perception about typical cheaper Chinese products? I understand that Kailhua (Long Hua) are capable of making some decent switches. Is the TVS Gold still the best option in mechanical keyboards in India at the budget end (I'm not interested in gaming)? Will it still be prudent to go ahead with the purchase of this keyboard? Thanks in advance for any help.

1.
Yes it is comparatively heavy however for casual work on bed kind of arrangement much lighter than a laptop on Lap.

2.
I have currently paired the same Along with MX Master 2S mouse and LG 27UK850 and it made a very compact solution to run my windows desktop (HDMI), Mac mini (USB C) and a Android BOX [Android 9] (HDMI) to share monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Since this was working with Android 9 box i do not think it would be an issue to pair and work with other recent (last 2-3 years) old mobiles.

Re: The Keyboard Thread : Pics, advice, recommendations

I am a major fan of mechanical keyboards. Being in an IT job, I live on the keyboard and am always looking for good ones, esp. since I can touch type.

I own one of these, but in Cherry MX Blue and used it for a long time. I also use the Dvorak keyboard layout, so looking at the keyboard is pointless for me.

Later, I switched to the Kinesis Freestyle Edge and liked it a lot. After using it for a while, I decided to take the plunge and bought the ultimate ergonomic keyboard - the Kinesis Advantage 2. This is the keyboard that the Cherry Brown switches were actually made for. The keyboard takes some getting used to - but it relies on solid ergonomic principles and really makes typing a pleasure.

Re: The Keyboard Thread : Pics, advice, recommendations

I had been using the Microsoft ergonomic keyboard for last 10 years as my daily driver in office.

The Keyboard Thread : Pics, advice, recommendations-microsoft-keyboard.jpg

No other wired keyboard has come close to it, be it in terms of key feedback or comfort. The integrated palm rest is perfectly positioned and really helps. Most of the key markings got erased over the years but I still kept using this just because it was so comfortable. It took a water spill on the keyboard to stop from functioning and then too I replaced it with a new one of the same model Tried many other keyboards in between but always kept coming back to this.

The other keyboard I've been using is Apple's wired keyboard when I got a mac. Despite the smaller size its comfortable to type on and the click feedback is great. Best part is 2 hidden USB type-A ports at the back of the keyboard. Though they support USB-2.0 speeds but they are perfect for that occassional file transfer and to keep the dongle of wireless mouse permanently plugged in, yet away from prying eyes.

Re: The Keyboard Thread : Pics, advice, recommendations

Have been using the Razer Cynosa Chroma for the past 1 year. Being just a membrane keyboard and not mechanical, the feedback is soft and rubbery. But no way it is a bad keyboards. Have made really long office documents and have played games in a stretch for 12+ hours and never felt fatigued or missed a reload. Add waterproofing, 16.8 million color RGB (syncing with the motherboard), macros and 1000Hz ultra polling. It has taken it's fair bit of abuse, chips and liquids as well. Pair that with a Corsair M65 Pro, you can kill anyone, no matter how "pro" they are.

I've been using a Logitech MX Master 3 Mouse for the last 7 months, been extremely happy with it. I've been super curious about getting the Logitech Craft but it was too pricey and really I was having to justify to myself if it was worth the outlay. For someone who does graphical design for example, I'm sure it'll pay itself back within months. Might get it as a bit of a vanity purchase one day..

That being said, the Logitech MX Keys is the keyboard equivalent of the aforementioned mouse and it's one I've been eyeing up for a while. Currently writing my thesis for submission soon, I can thoroughly say getting a good keyboard is no laughing matter as there have been days my fingers have cramped up massively - so much so I've wondered seriously about whether an ergonomic keyboard is something I should invest in? Anyone else have similar experiences? I have double jointed fingers so that contributes a bit to the fatigue when typing.

Oh, and pro tip: for anyone in the UK, Logitech do a flat 25% student discount if bought from their website. I got a handy £25 off the mouse when I got it so you can imagine the savings on their keyboards.

Re: The Keyboard Thread : Pics, advice, recommendations

If you live at the intersection of Mac-love and mechanical-keyboard-love, you find yourself alone. Very alone. And a third axis for wireless capability, and you're basically done for.

Luckily those of us in this predicament now have a solution in the form of these beauties from Keychron ! I used the K1 at home and travel with the K2. Both use Gateron blue switches; amazing if you're the user, less so if you're the one listening to someone else using them !
