This is pure profit move. Almost none of the old iPhone owners have a USB C charging brick. So if I buy the new iPhone, I have to first purchase USB C wall charger.
Also they are removing the earpods and brick from old devices. So even if you buy SE, XR, 11, you will not get the charger and earpods.

Re: Apple iPhone 12 launched!

Let's see:
- 5G is their biggest selling point? Do we even know when 5G would be ready in metros? Paying for something that may be useless for an year or more? If your argument is future proofing, think about the 5G hardware advancements next year and how much more efficient they could be? Also, do we know if these would be compatible with our deployed 5G tech when rolled out?
- Better camera, better processor? Wow, these are incremental updates that every manufacturer claims YOY.
- USB-C to lightening cord without a power brick? wow, at least this makes sense had they adopted industry standard. And, how many would have a fast charger that takes USB-C?
- No earbuds? How else would I sell the ear-pods?
- Even after all these short givings, the price is higher than last year's
- Did I mention about base storage of 64GB? Really?
- Same 60Hz, instead of 90Hz or 120Hz

The only thing I liked is the mini form factor (keeping aside my dislike for notch). Wish more manufacturers made smaller phones.

Apple is becoming an accessories company.
If you like iPhones, and upgrading from a 3 or 4 year phone, it probably makes sense to go with iPhone12, but even then it makes more sense to go with iPhone11 and save some bucks.

That's Apple's way of honoring their environmental commitments.

Guess they have made up their mind that only existing iPhone users will upgrade/buy a new iPhone, and so they can use their existing charging adapter.
The update doing rounds on the Internet is that not only the iPhone 12 series, but even the existing iPhones will not come with a charger or earphones. Chargers I can still fathom but earphones?

I can't fathom not including a charger.
Chargers break, don't they?
I tend to keep one charger in bedroom, one in living, and one at workplace. So, I am always in need of an additional charger.
Since the phones come with fast charging tech, do all older ones have this and with what wattage?

Re: Apple iPhone 12 launched!

Two things attribute to higher prices in India first being the non stable Dollar to INR rate, hence Apple most probably takes the upper most in the range. Say dollar to INR has been in the range of (73-76) in the past one year. Apple would take the rate as $80, to take into account fluctuations as we need to understand these still get imported into India. Secondly and the most important is the Taxes. Just with cars, electronic items are heavily taxed.
Every item has an ex factory rate based on which import duty is calculated etc. The prices we see on the Apple US website is not the Ex Factory rate, however we need to note that China has NTR status with the US (they pay no import duty whatsoever, at-least for Apple Products) and I still think they do enjoy that freedom inspite of Trump adding a lot of trade barriers etc.

Suppose we were to Import an iPhone Pro 128Gb Considering the ex factory rate as $999 and $ to INR rate as 75, I have done a comparison of why prices are so high here, basically its due to the 48% duties, taxes and surcharge as they call it

However we do have to note that the we have done this calculation is at the US selling price without state tax ($999), this is not the ex factory rate. This rate includes all the over heads of operations including shipping costs to the USA, Cost of operating stores (employees, rent, etc) in the USA.
I don't know how Apple is pricing their products in India, Ex Factory rate has to be lower than $999 , but going by the calculations I am assuming its $999 and I stand correct.

Re: Apple iPhone 12 launched!

Well high prices aside, one really doesn't need to upgrade one's device (if Xn series, 11 series) right now for 5G. The 5G hoopla is at least 5 years away in India and even when it is launched I doubt its availability across the country instantaneously (it requires line of sight).
Of course one has the dough lying around go for it, but for all others this year can be easily skipped.

I have a Xs and it hasn't slowed down an iota. I'm flogging this device till "iPhone 15 pro max ultra edge" is launched with simply a CPU "A17 ionic" (screen, body, earphones optional).

I feel Apple could have priced it better this time. In their presentation they clearly said that they are not going to increase the prices from 11 pro to 12 pro but we can see a rise of almost Rs.10,000 or more I guess. And they have also removed the iPhone 11 Pro from the line up.

iPhone 11 Pro 256GB as it is was out of stock everywhere.

Re: Apple iPhone 12 launched!

In this price, which is already high, we also need to factor in the price increase due to absence of the charger and earphones. I think it will cost anything between 5-10K for even a normal charger +cable + wired earphones combo if purchased separately from Apple. Wireless charger, air pods, fast chargers would cost much higher.

I was following the iPhone mini from some time and my expectation was it will be priced around 55K. Apple really surpasses your expectations.

Re: Apple iPhone 12 launched!

An optician was teaching his son the business. He says "Son, when a customer comes in and asks you the price, say it's $1000. If there is no reaction on his face, say that's per lens. If there is still no reaction, say frame extra."

Apple probably took a leaf out of this..

Re: Apple iPhone 12 launched!

For a new iPhone buyer in India, the way to look at it is:

iPhone 12 Pro Max (128GB) with AppleCare+ (for a 2-year warranty and support): 1,56,800
Silicone Case with MagSafe: 4,900
MagSafe Charger: 4,500
AirPods Pro: 24,900
Total: 1,91,100 (before available discounts)

The total cost of ownership (if you use for two years) is about 7,962.50 per month or about 265.42 per day (hoping you don't damage it). Also, you'll get a trade-in discount when you upgrade to the next one.

The real question is: Are you able to derive value (not monetary or productivity) from it?

PS: An apple (be it a fruit or a gadget) was never cheap in India, and that's what it'll be for the brand to retain its value.

Apple sees $81 billion in market value erased as it unveils its first 5G iPhones.
Even stock market and analysts are also not very happy with this launch.

Quote:
* Apple stock slid as much as 4% on Tuesday as the tech giant reveal its first slate of 5G capable iPhones.
* The dive erased $81 billion from Apple's market capitalization at intra-day lows before shares pared some losses.
* Analysts have high expectations for the new phones, with roughly 350 million iPhones eligible for an upgrade this year

Re: Apple iPhone 12 launched!

So none of the iPhone 12 models will be made in India, is that correct?

Also, apparently iPhone 12 Pro is the first phone to record in Dolby Vision HDR!

Re: Apple iPhone 12 launched!

The implication of no charger+earphones with Apple phones will be most launches in 2021 and beyond, whether Samsung/One plus/Pixel will also start doing the same. It happened with the headphone jack, so see no reason why it won't happen again.

So get ready to spend another 5-10k depending on whichever phone you buy next year onwards

Re: Apple iPhone 12 launched!

I have half dozen power bricks, and as many 'in-earphones' lying unused. I use wireless charging a lot and even the Ikea desk has one concealed (we are all going away from old-type chargers I guess) so that's okay with me. I'm a big fan on the 4S form factor and the new mini does appeal to me. Camera is brilliant (Dolby). The gorilla glass is stronger, and that's another plus. I'll take a call once I check it out at the stores

Re: Apple iPhone 12 launched!

Yeah, me too for the Mini. I checked on Apple India and with the trade-in for my X, for a 128 GB Mini, it was showing some 48thousand odd. However, I have a 7 lying around, that could be exchanged. The best part about the mini is the weight. I find the X heavy at times while picking it up from a table -
However, I had a doubt regarding the Trade-in procedure. Apple person will determine the condition and since he has discretionary powers, what happens when he says no. I should be able to cancel the total order in such cases. Further, I am sure, Amazon and Flipkart will have a better price and some Cashback offers than what Apple can offer. And Applecare+ is astronomical. I will rely on my Ringke/Spigen cases and take my chances.
