Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

Friends, please share memories of mobile phones (non-smart ones and non i-phones only) owned by you during the yesteryears. If these are not owned by you any longer, you can share memories sans images too. These were more fun to use, despite their lack of so many features as in present day devices. We used to spend a bare minimum amount of time with these devices, compared to the hours and hours we spend today with the smart/i-phones, ignoring our desktops, laptops, torches, GPS, clocks and watches and many other gizmos and conventional devices as these pack so many features within them.

Though much delayed as compared to many others, I bought my first mobile in early 2005. It was a Nokia 6233 with a 70MB (6 MB internal + 64 MB memory card) memory and a 2 Megapixel camera. It was quite sleek, easy to use and tough. I did not use the internet (was not made available then by service providers). The battery used to last for two to three days with moderate use. I had changed three SIM's with newer numbers due to relocations then. A fourth one is in use today. There was no number portability in those times. This phone was in regular use till early 2012 and is still in working condition with me. It has an active SIM card. I use it as an added device to supplement my smartphone, whose battery is as unreliable as the London weather. Till this day I love this basic phone the best of all. Its so rudimentary, simple and rugged. Not sure how many times it faced the rains, a few times getting wet and got dried under a table lamp. It's leather case shown here is of 2008 vintage and has dutifully protected it during falls two or three times during it's lifetime.

Next, in early 2012, I changed over to the Samsung GT-B 5512 Duos with a touchscreen facility, that just felt short of the modern day, smartphone attributes. It was just introduced in the market then, had a dual SIM (though I used only one), 512 MB of memory, a 320 X 240 pixels camera and was extremely user friendly. It's regular use years with me were shorter, due to the low memory, internet capabilities and last of all its lower resolution camera. Transfer of pictures to the desktop was through the Samsung Kies software supplied with the phone. It got retired from regular use in December 2015. This Samsung is still working and is used by me to mainly listen to the FM Radio. I also have quite a good number music files uploaded on this device for listening. It still has its black leather case from 2012 to protect it.

Both these devices have had a battery transplant only once during their respective lifetimes.

re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

Like most of the young people of my time, I was enamored by the mobile phones as soon as owning one start becoming less expensive. I owned many through the years, starting around 2005 during my graduation days.

My first (and still most loved) phone - Sony Ericsson T100

2nd one (while still in graduation), was a Nokia colored screen one (I forget the model name/number though). It had that immersive bounce game, besides the usual snake one.

3rd one I owned durign my MBA days was the legendary Nokia 6600. Power packed and one of the most advanced during that time. I still have it, it still works but I can't find the charger for it anymore (the "patli pin wala" charger)

Rest of the phones I owned (in chronological order):
Nokia 2505 GSM+CDMA dual sim:

Spice GSM+CDMA dual sim

Samsung GSM+CDMA dual sim (those were the days of different networks):

Sliding Qwerty craze caught me too:

Then the Windows was there too - Lumia 720 (It had the most fluid touch sensitivity which even the galaxy's and iphone of today can barely match)

Galaxy Grand 2. Got this one from office where I used to work (still working but battery swelled and the time of use and throw mobile phones came:

This was a stop gap arrangement, primarily me wanting to have a new phone without spending too much (Honor 7X). still working with a cracked screen.

Ohh !! man you brought back a lots of memories. I bought T105 in 2004 as my first phone out of my stipend money. It was light, fast, sexy and an eye catcher. Only grudge - Build Quality was a bit light. Never used to feel solid like lets say a N3310 or likes.

re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

I joined Ericsson in the early 90s. In those days we had two mobile Networks in the Netherlands. A NMT900 an a NMT450 system. These were the early analogue networks. NMT stood for Nordic Mobile Telephony. It was a defacto standard agreed by the Nordic PTTs. The Dutch and Swiss PTT joined this initiative and ended up with the same systems.

This is all long before the telecommunication market in Europe was de-regulated and GSM made its entry.

My first mobiel phone was a car mounted phone only. Big piece of kit.

Then pockets phones as we called them then started to appear. Well, in all honesty you needed big pockets for these “brick” phones. Literally and financially!

Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears-screenshot-20200728-3.32.05-pm.png

The rest is history as the say. I have probably used every model Ericsson and or Sony Ericsson ever produced over the years. Ericsson divested many years ago from the whole mobile phone (i.e. consumer) business and concentrated on the Network and related Services.

For a short while whilst based in Kansas City I also had a Blackberry. I must admit I really loved that Blackberry. But then the iPhone 4 was introduced and I have never ever had anything other than various iPhones. I usually have two of them with me. Always with a SIM from two different providers.

I only have a few of my old phones left. Not sure what happened with all the other ones? But I rummaged through a few shoe boxes in my loft and this is what I came up with:

The one on the left is another NMT phone. In those days it was an absolute revelation. Nobody had ever seen a phone that small. The one on the far right is one of the very first very small and very thin GSM phones. Loved this one!

Currently I am running iPhone 7. I was in the USA about a year ago and I was thinking about upgrading. But all the new iPhones bring is a better camera. I have no need for a better camera on my phone. So I decided to stick to me old trusted iPhone 7. Had the battery replaced. Because these days that is probably the single most important aspect of any device I carry on me. One charge, with my regular usage, needs to see me through the day!

Yes. Best part - blue screen backlight and orange keypad backlight was like a show stopper amongst nokia yellow lit ones at that time. And it had WAP too. I once broke the charger and it kept going for 2 days "after" displaying battery low warning!!

re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

In 1996, the hottest phones were the Sony X1000 & the Ericsson GH337. My sister had just got the Sony, so I bought the Ericsson for a whopping 40 grand. It was very stylish for its time & everyone wanted one (much like the iPhone today). Phones were only for calling back then, no one even used SMS. The GH337 came with two batteries as it couldn't be charged while wearing the battery - you had to swap them .

In 2006 or so, I'd bought the Nokia 6610 which really was the Toyota Innova of phones! Not a single owner of it would give it any less than 10 / 10 ratings.

Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

First one was the rock solid workhorse Nokia 3310 and then upgraded to Nokia 1100 when it was launched. Both the Nokia phones served me well and were a delight to use. Specially remember the 1100 for its amazing feature of torch and the battery life. Then came the next upgrade Nokia N-Series N-70. The Symbian OS was a delight and completely changed the scenarios around the mobiles.

And then BlackBerry took over and Blackbery Curve 9300 and boy, was I hooked to the BBM and how !! The qwerty keyboard was such a delight, I still remember the ease of using the Blackberry. I resisted IPhones for as long as I could but couldn’t do it longer and now the game continues

Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

2004: Nokia 3120, a color phone, bought for Rs.5k. Was short-lived as it got drenched in washing machine

2004: Nokia 1100-Still alive

2006: Nokia 6600-Still alive, except some buttons on the keypad

2007: Nokia 6233. One of the best stereo speakers of its time along with a nice 2MP shooter. Still alive

2007: Nokia N70 Music Edition. Lost this phone, but have its box and accessories lying somewhere. Was my first phone with a flash assisted camera.

2008- Nokia 5310 XpressMusic. Except the front mounted buttons, the phone was crappy IMO. Still alive, but body has disintegrated.

2010-Nokia 5235: One of the earliest touchscreens by Nokia. Touch is dead, asks for password which I know but cannot feed.

After this I have been a Samsung customer, Galaxy S3(2012), S5(2014), S7(2018) and S9(2018).

First phone I bought using my money was Sony Ericsson T200. I think it was sometime in 2002. I also remember paying extra money to get BSNL prepaid SIM.
