Checked out 3LCD Rear Projection TV (RPTV) again yesterday and dropped the idea again. It just doesn't cut in.

Also checked that both Sony and Samsung come with backlight adjustment option. Though Sony picture still seems better than Samsung. Much smoother movements and better noise reduction.

st - wht size 3lcd did u check out - 3lcd looks good and is comparable to lcd at 42" and below and generally the 50" n above 3lcds dont cut it. This is where the 50" to 70" sxrd units come in, did u get a chance to see an sxrd unit.

Also make sure you compare these at eye level an not you standing while the unit sits on the floor. Anyways if you still feel that sxrds are not as good, then theres no other choice but to wait for that impulse splurge on a full hd lcd
Thanks for giving my suggestions a thought

cheers,
j

I got a quote for 81k + tatasky free with 6 months subscription and citifinance discount of 10% on 0 % interest for 6 months EMI( dont know what they mean when they are not charging interest). Yeah, Samsung looks good and is a better bet than Sony atleast in LCDs(price and looks) but due to gharwallas dislike for samsung, I had to go for Sony. But again Sony can't be ruled out because its expensive!!

I looked at 3LCD projection not SXRD. As per dealer there are no SXRDs available in India.
Not sure if the one you have bought is an SXRD as Sony website doesn't talk about the same...
3LCD and SXRD are different stuff...

mine is the 3lcd 42" which compares quite well with 40" lcds in terms of PQ. I dropped the plans of 50/55" 3lcd as at those sizes sxrd makes more sense.

Yes SXRDs are not currently available in India as per sony india site, and if you are looking at higher than 42", then 3LCDs are not that great, in which case LCD/Plasma are the only choice

Do you mean that you were getting Samsung Bordeaux Art R81 40"
for 81k including tata Sky with 6 months subscription (say 4-5k)
and 10% disc from Citibank on interest free loan (8K)

So your net price for Samsung 40" R81 TV is about 81 - 4 - 8 = 69k???
The MRP of this TV is at about 89k

Philips 42TA2800/98 LCD

I just started looking around for 40inch LCD. I am not in an emergency to buy one right now, so waiting for better prices around Diwali time. In my recent visit to a electronic shop (Viveks), the shop has positioned Philips in better position with very good DVD playing compared to a cricket match in Sony & Samsung sets. Picture quality was amazing in Philips so requested the shop guy to connect the tatasky connection but refused to do giving some vague reasons (might be he did not see me as a potential buyer). The price looks VFM (80K).

please share if anyone own or compared philips 42TA2800/98 compared with other comparable Samsung or Sony models?

42PFL 7422 (Full HD LCD)

Just saw the advertisement on Hindu about the new model from Philips 42PFL 7422 (Full HD LCD for the price of 90k). Could not find the model in India Philips site. Got some details in the attached link & will try to visit the stores this weekend and check out this model.

I saw couple of Philips LCDs 32" retailing at 39k and their picture quality was not at all comparable to Samsung / Sony.
However do check out this yourself and give your feedback. From the specs the contrast of 4000:1 seems to be very low, also it doesn;t talk about Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) present on Sony and Samsung models.

Heard that only their Ambilight series is worth considering, but again pricey.

Philips LCD are available but they are the older models. They don't have teh latest technology yet. They are effectively a generation behind.

The newer ones with the latest ambilight and picture processing will be almost 2 generations ahead of the current TV's when they are launched. But they will be pricey.

Meanwhile Sony has launched their new Bravia range. The top of the X series, W series and D series. Supposed to be better than the Samsung's.

I too was on a LCD hunting mission today. I went to a store (Lotus) and was surprized to see how aggressively the salesman was marketing Philips. I did not like the PQ of philips and was more keen on samsung and new sony series but even then he kept pushing philips and finally when I was leaving much impressed by sony and asked for a brochure for the same he promptly gave me one for Philips and repeated his takiakalam "Philips is Better"

I went around a few shops in Bangalore today (Hometown, Pai, Sonyworld, Panasonic)

Hometown had some interesting offers.

The Sony KLV300A - 54000/-
Freebie - Tata Sky & Sawariya Audio CD & some scratch card !!!!

For the Samsung 32R8 I think - 49000/-
Freebie - Tata sky + mp3 player + Return Ticket to select destination in India + Free Holiday package !!!!!

For the Panasonic 42 inch Plasma - 69000/- (I'm not sure)
freebie - xbox core system !!! (its price is 19K in Hometown !!)

Sony World as usual did not seem inclined to reduce a single penny.

PAI was willing to give me the Sony for 52.5K without the Tata Sky & the Samsung for 45K or so.

Panasonic has a new Plasma Model TH-42PV70 which the showroom guy was willing to give for 84K. This was a really good one and I was almost tempted to take it. I somehow felt the Plasma better than the LCD.

Panasonic also has a full HD 32 inch LCD according to the dealer in the showroom. Its a new model or so he claimed ( TX-32LX700). He was willing to give it for 59000/- He didn't have a brochure for it so I'm not very sure whether its full HD or HD ready. It is 100 Hz & PIP with SRS also.

Looks like its a toss up between the Panasonic Plasma & the Sony/Panasonic LCD.

Really good that BHPians are sharing their price negotiations here, that way we know what's the best possible offers and where

My friend yesterday bought Samsung Bordeaux Art R8 32" for 45k (without Tata sky).

Anybody aware about what is the Citibank offer of 10% cashback on Samsung... and what's the catch? (sounds too good to be true)

Csenthil, hope you have read my plasma thoughts above, It is good PQ but most likely Plasmas will not last long, go for it only if you do not mind to be with an obsolete tech soon...
(I am myself confused as PQ of Plasma today is better than most LCDs).

Panasonic is insisting that plasma will not be obsolete and that they are in it for the long run. Did some research on the net and a lot of people are still betting on the Plasma.

Maybe in India Plasma will disappear??

I just saw this on philips india site :

Can anybody tell me why 47" is selling for lower than 42" and is it really worth chosing 47" over 42" ?

what i know from the site is that both are Full HD TV.
