Re: The Fitness Band / Smartwatch Thread

My apple watch went kaput all of a sudden (stopped charging and showing me the apple logo screen). Tried resetting many times but all in vain. I did not want to invest on a new watch yet. Was browsing Amazon couple of days back and saw a simple watch, called Amazit Neo. I liked the simplistic design (very much inspired by Casio) and on a whim purchased it.

Comes with support for both IOS and android devices (need to download an app for setting up). You also get real time heart monitoring, Sleep and sports tracking, 5 ATM water resistance (can use for swimming), Step counter, Call and message notifications. Also comes with sports mode to track running, cycling and walking.

Battery life is claimed to be 28 days but I will update after few days. For now my initial feedback is that I am liking it. I have a small wrist and was apprehensive that it may be bulky, but after wearing it does not look too big on me. Plus at 30£ it is cheap too. Yet to explore the other features and will update here after some time using it.

Amazfit does have some good reviews. Does it auto detect activities like running, cycling walking, etc? For enthusiastic users, ability to use with Strava will be useful. Does it send data to other apps, like Google Fit? Is the OS wear OS? Is GPS built in? Is altimeter and barometer builtin (needed for trekking and hiking, also for stair climbing)

Yes it does detect running and cycling automatically , haven't tried cycling yet (its very cold here). I am not sure if it shared data with other apps. I have paired with my iphone and it writes data to the health app so maybe it does. I am not sure what OS it is built on but supports both IOS and android (through Zepp app). No altimeter or barometer though. If you need all that better to buy the Amazfit Band 5 which costs around the same and comes with all of these plus the SPO2.

Re: The Fitness Band / Smartwatch Thread

Just like monitoring your weight helps you lose / maintain kilos, I feel that monitoring BPM helps keep yourself calm. Am enjoying seeing all the health reports. My family is trying to convince me to get the iPhone Mini.

In the meantime, here's captain cool on a busy working day

Pretty sure you’re going to land one soon enough. You’ve already switched to a MacBook Pro and have an Apple Watch now.

Congratulations on the Apple Watch and glad you retained it. Will get one in due time.

Would suggest you not to go for mini if it’s your primary phone, also iPhone 12 mini has not been a great seller and might be discontinued soon.

Go for iPhone 12 pro at least if you keep your phone for long time, also better battery life than mini.

Man, I love Android way too much. Plus, for serious work (including finances + accounting + excel sheets + official reviews), I still find myself coming back to Windows. Lastly, real-time Truecaller identification is very important to me and I guess iPhone doesn't offer that.

I like small phones. These phablets are not my scene.

Very offtopic. Good small/regular size phones are a dying breed. The only decent one available is the Pixel 4A if you are in the market for android. I have one, and its nice. I wouldnt say its worth the money compared to your average 10-15k phone, but its nice, and the camera is out of this world - especially HDR and night pictures.

Back on topic, I use a Fitbit versa lite. my main priority is sleep tracking as i suffer from mild apnea. For fitbit, it sucks that detailed sleep tracking is behind a paywall (garmin gives it for free). but the good garmins are $$$ and the cheap garmins are too basic. I got the versa used for $50 used, which was a very reasonable deal. Got the matching blue one for my wife too.

Now that google has acquired fitbit, i hope they bring in tighter integration

Pixel series especially the "a" versions. Absolutely brilliant from the 3a onwards.

Titan has launched a fitness / smartwatch too. Think it called the Traq.

Looking for reviews and opinions, if anyone here uses the watch

+GTO — I agree with mod +Gannu_1’s words You have multiple Apple TV’s at home and you are enjoying your MacBook too. Now we see captain cool sporting an Apple Watch. The Apple iPhone is worth a try, you will love it too.

And, if your actual family fails to convince you to get an iPhone, the Team-BHP family surely will be successful!

BTW - Why don’t you use Mac’s Pages or Numbers (for accounting and stuff) instead of Microsoft Tools? Alternatively, even Google Docs is amazing, especially for all of you mods to collaborate on your official reviews etc. As an iPad owner, I think most people can get their serious work done even on iPads alone.

If you do get an android phone, GTO, then I would too suggest the Pixel 4A (or wait for the 5a). Pixels are such amazing phones, I never fail to appreciate its clean and simple UI, and it’s camera is THE BEST!

An automobile journalist as yourself would definitely look for a phone with a great camera so the Google Pixel is the best bet for you!

Oh yes, the infamous battery life of the Mini and SE! But I don’t think discontinuation is a problem with iPhones, they have great support from Apple. 4-5 years of OS upgrades is a minimum, whereas with android, you barely get one update. (Unless your phone has android one).

And iPhones last long too! I have an iPod touch from 2009 and my old neighbour had a MacBook from the same time too, that still works.

Discussion going VERY OT, so to conclude it by connecting to cars - They are like Toyota’s of the phone world!

Re: The Fitness Band / Smartwatch Thread

Not a big fan of fitness bands or smartwatches because every time I used one it never turned out to be accurate. Need one for my father could anyone suggest a smartwatch that is accurate enough?

Why don’t you try the Casio G shock? They have an entire range of fitness tracking watches in the gshock line up.

Will your dad like to rock one? I don’t know.

Re: The Fitness Band / Smartwatch Thread

My friend is in a dilemma. Had been using fitbit Blaze for the last 5 years. Needs a replacement as the battery has deteriorated.

Minimum Requirements:
  • In-built GPS
  • 1 Week Battery (real world)
  • Used for tracking daily runs and cycling 5-10 km/day.

He has shortlisted these after seeing what each brand has on offer and how much he can spend.

Fitbit Versa 3 - INR 19,000/-
  • Meets the requirement.
  • Familiar with the app.
Amazfit GTR2 - INR 13,000/-
  • In-built memory for wireless music.
  • Long battery life.
  • New to the App.
Amazfit GTR2e - INR 10,000/-
  • Same as GTR2 without in-built memory.
Mainly looking for first hand experience from users who have switched from fitbit / garmin to Amazfit. What are the pros and cons of Amazfit trackers and the app they use over something established like fitbit / garmin?

If he is into running/cycling on a daily basis and takes fitness seriously I think Garmin makes more sense than a Fitbit. Then it opens a whole new world of choices.
