While there are multiple advantages to a desktop, but seeing as the two laptops are hardly used, would it not help to just skip the desktop and make do with the idling laptops? One less thing at home to worry about for maintenance and upkeep!

Oh right, shiny-and-new then! Computer building has been like lego for a long time, except for knowing about static risks: one can still destroy an expensive component with a touch. Configuration is the hardest bit.

People will need to know your budget and what kind of work you intend to do on this machine.

Thanks guys for all the responses.

Unfortunately, I'm not very well versed with the computer scene now so I've no idea what's the latest tech. But I've assembled several desktop systems before so I can do this part.
Yes thinking of this idea. But just not sure which part works with what.

Or

Give us your requirements and budget and we will do it for you, picking the right parts, that is. Assembling, you might need help.
Ooh, thanks for the website. You could literally waste days mixing and matching components and going for dream builds. I am thinking of budget of around 45-50K. But whatever i come up in this website turns out over 80K. Watching movies, playing my generation of games like CS 1.6 do not require hi-fi specifications, but occasionally my nephew might want to install something latest. So need to future proof enough for that.

Just not happy trying gaming on a laptop. PC provides a connection to me while i try my amateur gaming.

I am thinking of budget of around 45-50K. Saw this in the Dell website.
Seems to have most of what i need. So really wondering if i need to assemble. If i go for this, what mandatory additions do i include.

There you go - https://in.pcpartpicker.com/list/cbHDcq

This is a rough list I put together quickly.

1. Same price as that Dell you posted.
2. Better equipment.
3. Includes a decent Video Card.
4. Purchase from anywhere you find the lowest prices.
5. Will last longer and give you more satisfaction than Dell.

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

If in Bangalore, check this website for pretty much up to date local market prices (s.p road) - b w i n d i a . n e t

Check the preconfigured models as well to get an idea of the components that go in and it's prices.

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

Recently changed my gaming pc of i7-4790k and gtx 970 SLI with the one below. Monitor and gpu were bought in March and rest after Ryzen 9 3900x was launched. Retained the speakers.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3900x
Mobo: Asus Crosshair 7 Hero
RAM: T-Force Night Hawk Legend DDR4 3200mhz C14
Case: Cooler Master H500M
AIO Cooler: Corsair H115i Platinum RGB
GPU: MSI RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio
Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU 1440p 165hz IPS G-Sync
PSU: Antec HCG Extreme 1000W
SSD 1: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500gb
SSD 2: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 250gb
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2tb
Keyboard: Logitech G512 Carbon Tactile Mechanical
Mouse: Logitech G502 Hero
Speakers: Logitech Z623 THX 2.1

Although i enjoyed building it and gaming at stutter-free gsync 1440p, i'm already looking to sell it. Gaming is a big distraction for me and need to rid of it to concentrate on other things

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

I just got myself a new PC.

AMD Ryzen 5 3600
2*8GB Corsair Vengeance 3200Mhz DDR4 RAM
Gigabyte B450 Aorus ProWifi Motherboard
My old Nvidia GT1030 Graphics Card [Ran out of budget :P]
Corsair 500GB NVme SSD+2TB Seagate
Corsair 650PSU [salvaged from previous build]
Razer Arctosa keyboard [old]
Logitech G502 Hero Mouse [old]
Logitech Z263 2.1 Speakers [old...the power button is acting funny]
Antec NX800 Case [Love this case]

I am new to the world of overclocking and wanted to know how to get my Corsair to run at their rated speed of 3200Mhz instead of the 2133MHz it runs at now.

And Antec says i can fit two 140mm fans at the top, but for the life of me, i can't figure out how. I can see only slots on the top grill and am not sure if the fans would stay in place...

Lastly, do i have to enable UEFI for my NVMe?

That's a nice build. One observation though - with that CPU + GPU combo, it is advisable to have a PSU with a bigger output like 750W or more. These components get very power-hungry when running at full tilt.

The easiest way (provided it works properly), is to enable the XMP profile in the BIOS, which should automatically set the RAM to their actual rated speed. If that doesn't work, then manual overclocking of the voltage and frequency will be required, and there are plenty of YouTube guides on how it is done.

Feel free to ask here in case the XMP profile doesn't work out for you

I took a screenshot from a review video of this cabinet on YouTube, and it looks like you just need to screw the fans in place on the top grill, and they should stay put.

You shouldn't need to, because you're running both an SSD & HDD.

Cheers

Not sure what you saw but he has a 1000W PSU, quite adequate for handling all the load and then some

Enabling XMP profile was the first thing i did, but sadly the system did not boot up and had to change it back to default.

Shall check out the videos.

Would this be a good reference:

Shall try placing the fans today and see

And thanks for the clarity regarding UEFI. Windows boots up hella fast as it is. It's like light warp speed compared to my previous ancient cobwebbed build

Geez! I got mixed up looking at the cabinet model name. How dumb of me, lol. Thanks for pointing that out

That video is a good reference of what settings you need to change in the Gigabyte BIOS interface, however, the settings are different for memory sticks from different companies. Can you download a tool called CPU-Z from here: https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

After installing it, please post a screenshot from the SPD tab after selecting one of your RAM slots that has a stick in it. Sample screenshot of my RAM below for reference.

Based on the voltage rating for your RAM, we can set it correctly in BIOS, and it should work.

We would also need to run an intensive memory test to ensure that your RAM is stable once the overclock is applied, otherwise you might run into problems in the future.

Alternatively, if you want to get a bit more technical, and get the most out of your RAM with a Ryzen CPU, then you could follow the video guide below.
I am about to do this in a friend's build which is running a Ryzen 5 2600.

Alright. We can see from the screenshot that your RAM sticks should achieve 3200Mhz at 1.35V. You can follow the video guide that you posted, except use 1.35V instead of 1.36V for your RAM.

Also, once your RAM overclock is saved, and you can successfully boot to Windows, then download Memtest86+ from here: https://www.memtest.org/, load it onto a pen drive, and boot your PC from USB to allow it to stress-test your RAM for stability. Please note that the test takes about 3 hours to complete.

If you get any errors, that means that the overclock is not stable, and some settings might need to be further tweaked. If you don't get any errors, that means you're golden

Cheers

Update the bios to the latest. Old ryzen 3 bioses had huge problems. Only agesa 1.0.0.3ABB and 1.0.0.4B are stable enough to be used.
