re: The Computer & Configuration Thread

Are you sure about the quality of Hynix memory. Who makes it. I would rather spend some more and stick with decent brands such as Corsair, Kingston, G-Skill, etc. Trust me, it will be far cheaper in the long run and better in both short- and long-term.

Hynix, according to Wikipedia, happens to be the second largest memory chip manufacturer in the world, and one of the only five companies that manufacture flash memory, others being Intel, Toshiba, Samsung and Micron.

Hynix was used by Dell in their computers. i found this out when i had opened my Dimesion 4300 for upgrade - this was in 2005. don't know if they're still used by Dell though.

re: The Computer & Configuration Thread

My apologies on Hynix. It is supposed to be a good memory but our old h/w vendor says a lot of duplicates in the market. If you get it from a trusted vendor, then it is very good and you should be getting DDR3.

I did some minor research and figured that the cost difference between the two is not much. The All-in-One's look better and save a lot of space.
I'm looking for a basic computer(mainly email checking and microsoft word/excel usage).
Reliability and longetivity is important. How easily repairable & upgradeable are the all-in-ones?

Please advice basic models and prices if possilbe...
Why dont you look for Mac Mini? I personally feel that its _THE_ best CPU in the market. You will have to get your own screen, keyboard and mouse though.

re: The Computer & Configuration Thread

Only One Laptop(1.5yrs old already)

Dell Studio 15

Windows 7 Home Premium (obtained through free upgrade facility of Dell)
Inter Core2Duo T6500 2.1Ghz
4GB DDR2 1333mhz RAM (3GB usable)
ATI Radeon HD4570 Video card with 512MB Video memory and 1GB dedicated video RAM
In built ATI HD sound card with 5.1ch support
500GB 7200rpm HDD

External stuff:
1 2TB Seagate external drive running off the e-SATA port
1 Logitech mouse
1 5.1ch Creative system (which has gone bust now)

Highly satisfied Dell customer, considering that nothing, absolutely nothing has gone wrong in its whole 1yr 7 month life. I say this fact because on average my laptop stays on about 22hrs a day, with average 4GB of data transfers per day. My overall records are a 23day continuous switch on period and 72GB of data transfer in a day.

re: The Computer & Configuration Thread

Here's some news for people who've already purchased/are contemplating a Sandy Bridge

5% of the motherboards(P67/H67) sold have a chipset design error, which will cause your SATA 3 Gbps interface to degrade over time, depending on the amount of data pushed through it. Manufacturers are likely to offer repair or replacement, so get in touch with your vendor.

Also, prospective buyers are advised to wait a month (by TomsHardware) before buying to ensure that they don't get faulty stuff.

re: The Computer & Configuration Thread

I installed a Corsair 240GB SSD yesterday.

It is quite an eerie experience not to hear the buzz from my Velociraptor HDD. It feels as if the programs are loading from RAM and obviously much faster than even the Velo.
