I am using Avast Security. It is freely avaialble and till now (for the past 1 year) it has been going a great job. Not once has my computer crashed. If you do not want to spend money on an antivirus try out this.

situation might have chnaged now, but 3 yrs ago I tried Avast (free version) and that slowed down my computer like anything. Later I used Kaspersky (another friend was using it) and it was much faster/better than the other. Gradually it did become slower once the updates accumulated, but then Kas 2011 was launched and it was fast again.

At the moment I'm not using any (Microsoft defender only - with all firewalls etc. on) but by next week will install Kas again.

Used to have McAfee on both my computers, one started giving issues after a system restore and could not get that to work after quite some efforts on troubleshooting. So have switched to Microsoft Security essentials on that box.
The other one continues to have McAfee.

Used to make do with the free anti viruses available online. But with the number of transactions one does online I decided I have to get myself a security suite.

Have been using Kaspersky for the past 2 years & since I have had no issues, I guess it's been doing a good job. Plus it doesn't slow down the system

I agree, if you are on legit windows use this. Windows 8 comes with its own builtin defender.

I recently purchased kaspersky internet security 2013, with 3 PC key. Now I installed it on 3 laptops. One of them started crashing and I have to reinstall windows on that very laptop. What I wanted to know is if I can use the kaspersky key again on the new windows?

Ps- The windows I am using is not genuine

I recommend that you get a licensed Windows 8, it costs just 1,999. It should be possible to use the key again on the same machine. I use QuickHeal and installed Win XP 2-3 times and now Win 8, I used the same key from QuickHeal.

My policy is to use licensed OS and anti-virus. For others, there are open-source/free versions.

I have been using Eset Nod32 v 5.0.95.0 without any hassles whatsover. I have unchecked all popups and all warnings and have selected auto-update (viruses and threats directly go to Quarantine). So it's silently running in the background without much ado. It's not resource hungry and it detects pretty much all viruses, trojans and some malware too. Comes highly recommended.
