With VR I don't face any issues even in 200mm shooting moving objects (without VR obviously a tripod is required to get sharp output)

It has VR. As Samurai mentioned, I had to increase shutter speed (by compromising on ISO) to manage a decent shot.

Does the extra 10K for the D5200 over the D5100 justify the price ? I know the technical specs are better, but given 2 identical photos taken with these 2 cameras, can one make out the differences between the two ?

I can invest the extra 10K in a lens.

10K according me is not that big a difference for a good lens. But between the D5100 and D5200 it makes a huge difference. The biggest being the AF system. Apart from the sensor of course.

Absolutely! VR is pretty much useless and a tripod will ensure you don't get that shot. Increase shutter speed according to moving subject ( speed/ direction) Pan* and shoot.

The sensor is marginally better in the D5200 from whatever googling I did.

Reading http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3502642 , I'm not quite convinced as to whether the 10K price difference is justifiable or not . Probably yes for video quality but not for image quality.

The biggest thing as I mentioned is not the sensor, but the focus system. The cross type you get would be very handy for action photography.

The D5200 sensor is fantastic. The same one is used in the D7100.
What different lens do you have in mind for 10K extra?

I would agree with this if one wants to shoot some action e.g. wildlife or sports or running kids.

The dpreview link I posted earlier had a photo of a horse taken @25 mph with a D5100 that came out pretty well IMHO. The point I'm trying to make is that the real world difference between image quality will be lesser than what the specs and pricing seem to suggest.

Well, I used to use 11 points AF with 1 cross type sensor to shoot moving wildlife and BIF. But better AF helps if you want to shoot action.

Re IQ: you are the only one who can take that call based on what matters to you.

Recently, I was into some close-ups using my Sigma 150-500 on a Nikon D7000.



The below picture was taken with the central single AF point on the head. In the output picture, the head is not sharp as you may find.









I came back home and read a lot on the “back focus” issues associated with D7000 and the Sigma too is not too far behind with this regard.
I did try “fine-tuning” with sigma and to note any visible correction, it had to be in the north of -15 with -20 being the limit.


Is there any “back focus” issue here or any issues with the way I shot this picture ?

That particular session I wasn’t able to get any sharpness on the " head" at all.

I think the warranty will be honored if you purchase through WSRetail (unit of Flipkart) than other sellers in Flipkart.
