He was a photo journalist, and did lot of street photography. 50mm is good for that. To be his equivalent, would need to purchase a 35mm lens on APS-C.
For landscapes, he used a wide angle lens, but he rarely shot landscapes.

That said, just because a specialist photographer uses a special lens, does not mean everybody should keep that lens as their only lens.

I have a friend who exclusively shoots with 500mm + tC has he shots birds. Now thats the only lens he uses, and his pics are great. But can we all move to that focal length?

Hey guys,
I went ahead and got the Nikon 5100D over the Canon 500D. No particular reason other than shortage of 550D in the market. Got the Nikon for 35K from Lalit foto studio in Fort.

I asked couple of places for the lenses namely the 55-200mm for Nikon and was quoted around 9K, the same for Canon 55-250mm.

Nikon's prime lens for 5100D and 3100D will be available next week and it will be around 8.5K as opposed to Canon's 5.5K.

So all this talk about Nikon lenses being expensive, yes they are but nothing out of the ordinary.

As of now just learning the camera and its features.

50mm is not a specialist lens (it ain't a tilt shift or fish eye)..its a useful focal length and shines in low light scenarios (try using that 18-55 for indoor ceremonies without flash). Besides majority of people who buy SLR's also end up buying other lenses based on their interests. So even if someone buys the kit lens..its not their only lens, say, 6 months down the line.

Guys !! I was very interested to buy genuinely used Canon 50mm F1.8 and Canon 55-250mm IS lenses. But unfortunately i was not able to get good ones.. so any pointers where i can get some used better ones in Bangalore, else the best place to buy new ones in bangalore in best price...?

No flash. 18-55 IS @ 25mm
Taken inside a not so well lit cafe near Charminar. Was around 5-6pm in the evening. A higher ISO and a steady hand is enough.

IT is 85mm Focal length equivalent in canon cameras.. Which is pretty narrow for landacape/
Secondly, indoor photography is one type of photography. There are many applications where you cannot use 50mm.
Just because its a very good lens does not mean you have to shoot everything with it. For example, indoor shots will always look better with an ultrawide as opposed to 50mm.
For potraits, this will do the job, but for many scenarios, a 100mm f2.8 will do a better job.

Architecture to portraits to macro. All shot with 50mm. I am with Tanveer when he says specific lens for specific usage but the vice versa doesn't hold good for me. Like Chase Jarvis says "The best camera is the one you have on you", I'd extend it to saying "The best lens is the one that you have on you". Just because a prime restricts you doesn't make it not useful. It pushes you to be more creative, to work around, and all this with a good IQ. Anyway, each to his own (Come to think of it, I have been using that phrase a lot).

I don't want to start an argument. Everyone has their own opinion...for the focal length as the kit lens. I would much rather save up and get a 17-55 2.8 or 15-85 (as regards to canon). The only canon kit lens which is worth keeping is the 24-105 that comes with the 5D II
Being 85mm in Canon cameras..yes in the APS-C sensors (but you shouldn't read too much into it)

Being not able to use a 50mm for many applications maybe true but then the same holds true for the kit lens.

In a real world scenario, definitely the guy getting a 1/200 SS will be able to nail the picture but the guy with a SS of 1/20 will have to be lucky(bumping up ISO is an option but beyond 1600 in a consumer DSLR is asking too much). Bokeh is a different matter altogether.

If your point was that the guy with 1/200 can safely do it without worrying about camera shakes then it makes sense (that he can reduce exposure time by bumping up ISO - if possible).

However between the two pictures one other difference is DOF, the first picture has effectively blurred out the background - if that is an effect desired then no amount of ISO bumping will help (though you can of course Photoshop later)
