Which shop you are talking about in Chennai? Let the forum members know it too.
By any chance the shop you are talking about is S'mart?

Hi... I am new to DSLR photography, wanted buy a DSLR one for sometime now, was looking around and found couple of used ones...

One is in T-Bhp Classified Team-BHP Classifieds - DSLR Olympus E-500 D Evolt with 14-45mm Lens and accessories - Powered by PhotoPost Classifieds. Saw the pics of the camera and taken by the camera, looks as good as new. 8MP and the price is 20K. He is not ready to come down with price. Get a 14-45 lens + hood + some acc. like bag, memory card and stuff. Found the price lil on the higher side always, but still went ahead with talking with the seller as I was a big fan of Olympus. I had one Olympus Semi Slr and my friend as a SLR, the images are simple brilliant. After talking to the seller, I was about to deposit the money and get the camera shipped to me, when...

I heard a friends friend is selling his Canon EOS 1000 D with 18-55 lens, January 2010 purchased, with bill, under Warranty camera for same 20k. Dunno what accessories he is giving out.

Now I am in splits, my mind says buy Canon as it is a newer model and is in Chennai can be checked and bought. My heart says Olympus for the image quality.

Which one should i go for? both of them say they are selling for upgrades.

the body of the canon EOS 1000D is not ergonimcally designed and you will struggle to hold it and it is a bit heavy also. however you can order for an aftermarket addon grip that also comes with additional shutter release button.

but the quality of pictures and the processor of the Canon is very good compared to olympus and also has tonnes of features. if you like the body and the grip of canon you can always go for this but bargain for 16 or 17K since the new ones here in bangalore are available for 21K and i think on jjmehta.com i saw it for 22k.

I would vote for Canon, even though the lens is inferior to the IS. It is practically easier to upgrade the lens and enjoy better quality photographs with 1000D with a lens like 50mm 1.8.

If you go to the US, or have access to folks who can get lenses when you want to buy one, then either one is a good choice.

I would say put a bit more money and get a new 1000d. You'll get warranty as well.

Does it make sense to go for a DSLR without mfg warranty and with dealer 6months warranty if I'm saving around 7K? Seller is 'customer shop' (chennai) on ebay.

Its as simple as this 'losing your peace of mind for 7k'. I suggest you to go with Warranty.

I am toying with the idea of buying Canon 550D 18-135 mm IS lens kit at Singapore on my way back to HQ, which costs around S$ 1500 [INR 51 k] free of GST. I will be travelling with my wife. 1 year Canon Singapore warranty = 1 year Canon India warranty. But, do I have to pay customs duty at Bangalore International Airport since it exceeds Rs 25 k limit per passenger? Or one camera per passenger is allowed, just like one laptop per passenger? The same kit is available in India for Rs 64 k with 2 year Canon India warranty. Kindly enlighten me.

^Ravi,

I dont think 550D+Kit is 64K in India anymore. The prices have gone down a bit. I see these camera is avaialble for 46850.00 on a couple online stores + It should also be available in Reliance Digital / Croma stores.

You just need to ensure that these places in India are providing the camera along with the kit + 2 years Mfg warranty. If thats true, your Ausi deal is going to be costlier, you can buy the same thing cheaper in India along with 2 years mfg warranty. Others can shed some more light / resources on it.

Ketan,
The 18-135mm IS lens itself cost between 23-25k and the cost of 46k at Croma etc is without this lens. I think that J. Ravi is getting a very good deal for the said kit at 1,500 Sing. Dollars. Go for it, I say!

ah! my mistake, I misread it for 18-55 IS. Yes, in that case Ravi can go for it, I dont have much idea about 18-135 IS.
550D with kit lens is for 46K+ over here.
