Well, I should have clarified: I shot that elephant - a pretty big fella - sometime in the late afternoon in Sigur (Sigur Plateau - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). That night, around 9 pm, I was driving on a muddy and rocky trail around 1 km of the place where the picture was taken. I turned a corner and saw him 5 feet from my vehicle. It was too late to stop or turn since I was committed in the turn. So I pressed the accelerator and scooted hoping that he wouldn't be chasing me (I couldn't outrun him on that trail). Was quite a heart-in-the-mouth experience.

Not nit-picking at all. At one stage you say it was late afternoon and in the next line you mention 9 pm. Or is it that maybe I'm missing something??

Secondly, if you were so hell bent on escaping from there, then how did you manage to photograph the beast?

Ok, maybe I should pay more attention to my English to prevent confusion, but I thought I made it apparent that I came across this elephant twice on the same day :
1. In the afternoon when I took his pictures
2. And then again about 4 hours later in the night when I ran (well, drove) for my life

I got the result I wanted but also got a vignette only on one side and the reason (am yet to confirm this) is that I shouldn't be using a CPL when I shoot with the light source directly in my frame. I tried to introduce vignette on the other side but failed (again, blame my PP skills).

You're correct about the cause being the CPL. When used with wider lenses, you may end up with these kind situations especially when shooting more of the sky.
