Umm, first things first. Start with Aperture priority mode with autofocus on for now. Start making photographs with these settings and then eventually move to other settings. The problem with all manual stuff is that we get overwhelmed at times, unless we have a good control over the camera. And, do join us for a walk . It might help you and it'll be great fun!

As far as I understand, Manual is the best if you are shooting in a studio set up with accurate control over your lighting and subject. Shajufx, i was on spot metering. The Heron was constantly on move. Was targeting the eyes only, couldn't get it.

You overexposed the whites on the crane. Shutter speed can be increased here to reduce the over exposure, while maintaining the aperture.

A very regular image. Look for contrast in subject and background. Look for interesting light that you can play with, like some rim light, or back light or spotlight through shadows etc. The whole idea should be, how can you make your image different and not just another run of the mill shot. The mood must reflect in the light, composition and frame.

And "Unofficial Bachelor" TG? Well, lets make that as Official Bachelor TG :P

How does one make shots like this interesting? Flat blue skies and no objects to pay with.
