Our dog died at ripe age of 16 years of age in 2015 and we went through similar pain, especially mom because he was always around her doing silly things. We thought of another dog but resisted for that same reason. Its hard to train your mind and heart to something like this.

This particular case was immensely heavy because of the unknown factor in it. Not knowing what happened or what will happen is rather excruciating than a definite circumstance like death.
On one hand you have sliver of hope that won't let you sleep and on other you have these bleak, morbid thoughts.
