Spaying and neutering is absolutely the best option, with multiple benefits (the population will be kept stable, and these guys will prevent new ones from entering the area).

Thank you all for your valuable and practical solutions for the issue I am facing. No, I am not throwing stones at the dogs. That was a fleeting thought. There are better ways to handle this situation.

Kind member keroo1099 gave me a contact of NGO who is responsible for neutering the dogs in my area. I called them and explained the issue. They said they will pay a visit next week to do a survey on the dogs and then decide on the next course of action.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

My kittens have discovered : birds.

The hours they spent sleeping earlier are now being spent on bird watching. I feel the bird feeder we hung in the patio has paid itself 10 times over.

Enjoy the nonstop “krrr krrr” sounds by the cats all day then. Something like the video below. It’s quite therapeutic, like their purring. Not too loud and with a deep bass-type tone (if you are close by).

Edit: those balcony bars might not sufficient.

They do exactly this or at least one of them! We were wondering what was it and googled it. I am glad they are becoming "vocal" otherwise they are silent 99% of the time.

I am thinking of putting chicken coop wires around the whole thing. They easily go thru the gap onto 3 inch wide platform outside the grill. Its kinda scary.

You don't need to worry about the width of platform, Cats are like Ninjas. Leave 3 inches, even 3mm is enough for them to balance and do all stunts

Good Morning everyone. My pet is a lab retriever Boomer he is a bundle of joy, adding him to my family has been the best decision. There is never a dull moment with him by the side. He is playful obedient and cute .The bond between my son and him is like if I scold him Boomer comes to the rescue.

I can completely relate to what you just said. They are indeed bundle of joy. And yours looks a complete carbon copy of mine.

Here he is having a cozy sleep. He wakes up to the door bell as per his convenience, Damn they don’t even know how spoiled they are

Just a suggestion, if he’s young, get him neutered for his better life !

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Landed in Mumbai and this was the first street cat I met. Amazingly, outside of Instagram, I had never seen a cat in real life with each eye of different color.

Exceptionally hot and humid here, poor boy lapped up water like there was no tomorrow.

Our adopted Indian breed. He is named "Gabru" . He is a survivor and I rescued him from my workplace parking. He is thriving, full of energy and keeps us throughly occupied.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Hello all,

I have an opportunity now to adopt a male pup (golden retriever). But before I commit myself into that I want to know from those who have been there and done that everything regarding...

1. Food, clothing, shelter
2. Activities
3. Training
4. Financial impact
5. Any other aspects

Oh yeah, any PDIs on this adoption

Please advise.

1. Premium dog food runs into several thousands. I spend around 5-7k at least on primary dog food. High quality treats cost more. Cheaper dog food is available but the long term impact on the dog’s health runs into several thousands. I don’t believe much in dog clothing. Maybe a rain coat for the long haired breeds at most. For a golden, you’ll need a large sized crate which again costs a few thousands depending on the brand. This assumes you will crate train your dog.

2. They are working breeds. Very easy to involve and play with but spend atleast 30 min a day, rain or shine, playing, walking and socialising outdoors

3. Training: Easy to train but if you are new to ownership, get a professional. Good ones cost upwards of 20k but cannot stress enough how much it enhances dog ownership. Do it early. Find one who trains the dog and then trains you.

4. Financial impact: As much or more than raising a human. Vet bills, Food, boarding, grooming all add up in the long term.

5. Goldens are a lovely breed. Great with kids, easy to train. But they shed a lot. Which means anyone with asthma cannot be around them. Also means you need to spend 15-20 min daily grooming them. Every single day.
In general for any breed there are very few good breeders in India. This means several health issues for poorly bred dogs which then keep getting passed on. So ensure the dog is from a good line. Check the kci certificates and ask to see the parents.
If nothing else check for hip dysplasia in the parents. This is a painful, life altering disease that is seen very commonly among several breeds.
