They sure don't. But they are very hardy, require next to no maintenance or special diet. They will eat whatever we eat at home; over a period of five decades we have had half a dozen dogs at our home, one after the other. Most of them were Indian breeds or mongrels, one was a Dachshund and one was a German Sheperd. All of them were very loving and loyal, but the foreign breeds required a lot of special care.

Watch this standing jump over a fence by the Chipiparai breed from south TN, also called Kanni by some. The other notable breeds from TN are the Rajapalayam hound and the Kombai dog.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

So here are the pets at my native place. The first photo is of Jimmy, aged 1.5 years , doesn't sleep on the ground at all and very calm . Scared of heights but very very alert always.

Second photo is of Luna , aged 1.5 years same as Jimmy but she is very very naughty and hyperactive and she's got itchy teeth. Have to always hide our footwear when she's let loose.

Third photo includes our both dogs and a year old calf who we call Sundari . All three run around the fields and mingle with each other and it's such a joy to watch.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Probably one of the very few photos I have of the brood together. From left to right: Sir Floofsalot, Mimosa, Pesto and Squichu. All of them rescues and all of them happily running around and scratching up my furniture...

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Hello my fellow cat dads , need your suggestions on harness (leash ?) for my cat. He's about 7 months old now, very energetic and strong, so I want to get a proper stitched harness for him. Also please suggest how can I get him used to harness ? I am also considering to adopt one female cat to keep him company, as he gets lonely on days when I can't give him much time ( I know I am a terrible pet parent). Or should I just get him neutered and save myself from trouble to handle two cats btw here's the spoilt kid helping me in decorations

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Definitely neuter him just to save your house from being sprayed and stinking and constant crying wanting to go out as he matures soon. Unless you are ok with it and want to have his kids.

My 2 males, both neutered.

Neutering - definitely yes (irrespective of your other decision). You'll start experiencing his mating sessions if already not experienced till date.

Second cat/kitten - please do. Cats do excellent in pairs, need not be a female necessarily. Make sure you go through the introductory process properly over the first week or two (google it up, enough information available). They will keep each other company for a good part of the day easily.

Edit: introducing process between both the cats (if it wasn't clear earlier). My cats took about a week, but now they stick with each other all day as if they were from the same litter.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

I need some input on below queries:

1. Which dog breed (medium sized) would you guys suggest that is not overly hostile but is protective enough of the home/property and is good with elderly folks (mom)?
We have empty space/garden of about 2.5-3k sqft and house on the side. The empty space is walled along with the house.

2. Are some breeds easier to train than others, if so, please consider that for q#1 above. I would like to get the dog trained well, so inputs on that too.

3. What do you guys do when you have to travel (and have a pet at home)? Taking the dog with us is not going to be possible, not for mom especially. What to do in such cases? I haven't seen any dog care centers here.
Right now, this is the biggest hurdle that is stopping us from getting a dog.

4. We have extremely aggressive and hostile street dogs around. Since they know all the residents here including us, we don't face any issues but any newcomer, or animal gets their brunt. How will they react to someone's pet dog? I am afraid they will harass a new puppy or worse kill it. Our neighbor's pet dog gets bullied by them everyday if he ever comes out the compound. What can be done?
