Guys in BLR need help. I have a 8 month old lab. She is shy of other dogs.. Want a place where she can be comfortable . Any recommendations? I stay near mahadevapura, BLR.

You are welcome, I drive 76Km one way via ORR to progressive kennels for a 30 min swim session for him .
Yes, do check the place in person and take a call. You can mention "Aari" (black lab) when you meet them and they should recall easily, in case you want to give any reference, which is not mandatory anyways.

Wow, Pradeep, 150 kms round trip for a 30 minutes swim session. You really love lil Aari and are a true blue BHPian, who enjoys the chance to drive.

Spoke with Priyanka a while ago. She wanted to ascertain how I came to know of Progressive; remembers both you an Aari.

I plan to go over one weekend soon with the dogs and check out the place. Maybe, I will bump into you over there.

Question to those who keep fishes

Do you clean the tank yourself, or do you get some one to do it.

Is there anyone in Jayanagar / JP Nagar area in BLR who does this ?

I am an accidental puppy owner (is that the right term?) since yesterday. That too when I am not in country.

Story is that wifey was driving in hometown yesterday when a spell of heavy shower commenced. When stopped, there was a near deluge in the locality. When she started again she passed a really young stray puppy which was shivering, half submerged. Within couple of minutes of passing him, she realised it may be in need of some help so she turned around and returned to find that a girl had wrapped the puppy in her scarf in the mean time and left. The puppy was shivering badly. In the middle of traffic and deluge, with the puppy's mother no where in sight even after nearly half hour, wifey decided to bring him/her home overnight. The poor chap gulped milk/food crazily and feeling home since. I admire my lady's kind act. When she took him out today morning for nature's call, stray dogs in the locality attacked and wife had to rescue him again. Now she is convinced that the puppy's life is in danger if it is sent back where it was. In a day's time it has also become an integral part of my daughter's life.

I am at the best a dog - neutral person, not a kennel enthusiast and have agreed with wife that we should protect him for now at least.

Coming to the point, I need some guidance on what to do next.

We do not wish to make it an expensive affair of some nice dog houses or ferry it to special saloons.
This is not because of the stray breed but as such we ourselves try to live simple and hence we are looking at simple affair, keeping him healthy and also ensure our health, feed him well (vegetarian only) and take a good care until we can assess if it can survive itself or if we need to keep him and I am sure within few day it would mean only one thing...keep forever.

Overnight it has S(P)OILED his gunny bag thrice.

1. Can a stray puppy be taught how to discharge himself in washrooms/toilets? How?
2 What immediate vaccinations are we looking at and its costs?
3. In tier 2/3 cities, how much does the dog trainer costs and what realistically can they teach the puppy?

Apologies if my thoughts come unorganised but then event was as well.

That is very kind act from your better half. 7 years ago I was in a similar situation and the rescued pup is now a integral part of our life.

1. You need to take out her after every time you feed her. Also, you may take her out every 2-3 hours till she did months old.
If you want to train her using the toilet place a piece of a cloth with her urine in the toilet and close her inside. Keep her till she does her job. Gradually move the cloth to the particular area you desire her to use. Also don't forget to give her a treat and praise her after she does her job as per your desire.

2. Consult a vet. He will prescribe what the medicines and vaccines that are required. She may need deworming. It is not a very costly affair. You may need to spend around 1500 yearly for vaccination.

3. I don't think trainer is required. There are plenty of material available in the net that will teach you regarding what to do and not to. Trainers usually take 500 rs per session.

And I'd request you not to chain her. She will be a source of so much joy soon you'll not be able to think your life without her. Like you I was also a dog neutral person but was 7 years ago .

1. Yes a puppy can be trained. Read up on Newspaper method on the NET. Initially put the puppy on the news paper for its job, then each day move the newspaper towards the toilet.
2. Vaccines start at 3 months a good Vet should be able to guide you. Briefly as I recollect
. Rabies - Once a year
. Parvo - once a year
. Distemper - twice a year.
We maintained a file for our Lab, given by our vet, where he pasted the lable of each vaccine given
3. Best trainer is you. Just read up on the net and start training.

Regrading food I would suggest the following.
. Parboiled rice it has more vitamins compared to normal rice : 5-6 cups
. Vegetable and their peels, chopped fine : 2/3 pressure cooker
. Dal : 2/3 cup
. Garlic : 1 whole pod chopped fine
. O : 1 TSPl
. Turmeric : 1 TSP
. Chicken Mutton bones and wastes : 1/2 to 1 kg
. Water : till top layer

For our dog we cook once every 7/8 days in a 12L pressure cooker. All items fill the pressure cooker to 75% height. It takes one hour for it to start whistle then we stop and let it cook in its own heat for one hour. Here are some images

Keeping a furry partner is not an expensive affair but definitely requires commitment and little-bit(lot) of patience. A dog doesn't require fancy dog house or frequent visits to saloons. Just a simple warm bed sheet or even a slightly bigger door mats would just do fine. And a warm bath with a nice conditioning shampoo for Dogs (like Oatmeal) once in 2 weeks. And a small amount of Fipronil spray on the Dog's coat(not recommended for Pups below 6 months) and near the places where the Dogs sleep to keep the Fleas and Ticks at bay.

Coming to your specific questions I will answer the 1.) and 3.) first.
About the Potty training, it is best taught when they are in Puppies. There are plenty of online videos available on the internet. However just to address your concern I will share the way I taught my 8 dogs. The best way to potty train the Pup is using Dog Treats. These are just small candy-types for Dogs to nibble-on usually it is coated with flavor like Chicken. Again as you have mentioned being a vegetarian and you do not want to indulge in making trips to fancy pet store, the most humble yet Legendary Parle-G would just do fine as well. Break each biscuit in to 4 parts. Observe their schedule for a day or two(as mentioned earlier you gonna need Patience). Pups normally would want to relieve themselves soon after they eat or drink something. So the next time(around the same time when you would know the pup would want to relieve itself) take the pup to the bathroom or your preferred spot where you want the pup to attend the natures call. Keep them occupied till it relieves itself(you guessed it right, requires Patience). The moment they do assure them with some affectionate phrases like "Good Boy/Girl" and give them the treat. Remember not more than 1 piece of treat/biscuit. Or they will lose its worth. Repeat this till your Furry mate does where it is supposed to do.

If it relieves where it was not supposed to. Point to the place and sternly say "NO". Remember never ever hit the dog to make it understand. Your commanding and assertive tone is just enough to get any job done and frankly you are the best trainer for your Pet. Professional Certified trainers are required only when you want your pet to do go beyond Daily duties like Tricks / Rolls (in fact even you can make your pet to do this. But requires a little more effort).

Coming to the second point, i.e. vaccines, a shot of anti-Rabies and D.H.L.P.P(Distemper, Hepatitis,Leptospirosis,Parvovirus,Parainfluenza) each per year is more than sufficient. Also a Dog's has a sensitive stomach. So it requires De-worming once in a quarter. In Bangalore, this would cost you 1000/- all put together.

Surprised nobody mentioned neutering/spaying the dog yet. That's also one thing which may need to be done.

I adopted a kitten without knowing about this part first. Only after adopting it, did I realize that I have to neuter the kitten, otherwise it would be very difficult to keep it at home.

It was a huge moral dilemma for me, but I finally got it done when the kitten was about 7-8 months old. But it also made me think about whether I would ever have a pet again (likely not). So that may also be a big consideration before one adopts a pet.

I do it myself and you can inquire your LFS for this service. Here in Chennai, they charge 500rs but a complete wash which could kill all the good bacteria.

Depends on what you mean by cleaning the tank.

If you are talking about, catching all the fishes, putting them in a bucket and then removing all the decorations stones and gravel from the tank and scrubbing everything clean and then filling up water and adding the fishes back in well if that is what you have in mind then you dont have to do that. In fact that is harmful to the fishes.

Cleaning a well maintained tank with proper filtration should require weekly siphoning off 50% of water [depends on fishes and filtration] and refilling the filter. End of story. Add water conditioners if required.

Congratulations are in order to you and your family for rescuing a stray. Even if you are dog-neutral, I doubt that little doggie is going to be separated from your family.

With a heavy heart I share the news of the sad death of my beloved pet Doberman whom I called "Kuttu".

She turned 10 years old on September 14th, and two days later, today morning, she left me. My family is left devastated by utter grief. .

She was detected with tumors in her mammary glands when she got her rabies vaccine last December. The vet told that surgical treatment was not feasible at her age, and thankfully she did not suffer much, as the tumor did not hurt her much. She was active till 12 hours before her death.
