In my opinion, you could keep your choice down to Lab/ GSD from what you mentioned.
Regarding your questions, a golden retriever (large 32+kg) owner speaking here. I'll answer them :D |
Please do post some pics of your golden! Would love to see her :)

Here goes. No access to my old pics here in office but here are some I managed to fish out from my web album, of a trip to a coffee estate earlier this year. She is a champion golden retriever, won best puppy in 2008 and best in class award in a 2009 dog show. :D Loves toys, loves to jog and loves to eat! She is 3.5 years old now
Pardon the bad image quality and ghost eyes
Happy to run around in the open space. The other dog which lives in the estate is wondering why this one is getting so excited about some open space!
This was after she took a swim in a nearby pond.. entire fur coat was all ruffled up :D

Goldens are really really adorable! She looks great! :)
I hope and pray somebody comes out with rabies vaccination in the form of a tablet/syrup. My pet just won't take injection shot.
We can't force her and she is at her furious* best when someone even enters the house with the vaccination. Can't really understand what to do. Give sedatives & then vaccinate? Vaccination is important too but via injection shots?
Please quote or PM me if some other alternative is available. I would indeed be very grateful.
What about travelling with the pet? have you blokes traveled? Does the pet bother?
* She is usually very friendly with outsiders and though she barks at them, hasn't bitten anybody. Her bark is more than enough to keep unwanted people away.

Rabies injections are given annually once (although a single one is enough to protect for 3 years) It is just 1 prick a year. I wonder why there is so much fuss. In fact dogs' skin is not so sensitive as human skin. They won't even fully feel the needle pricking under their skin. It is just for 2 seconds until the vaccine empties out. Try to get a vet to come and give it at home. Reward the dog for staying calm when the vet comes. What breed is this? How does he/she detect if someone has the vaccination in hand? If the vet comes with a brush in hand, does it still behave aggressive? The problem I suspect is not with the vaccination but perhaps with the way your current vet handles dogs. Switch the vet and try.
Vaccination is extremely important. Taking a dog out without a vaccination is like driving a car without an insurance policy. Pardon the analogy :D
I have travelled with my dog umpteen number of times without any problems. Few things about dogs travelling in cars
- some dogs will love travelling by car and will themselves jump and sit in the seat
- some suffer from pronounced motion sickness and might puke frequently
if your dog belongs to the second category (even mine did), all you need to do is take her out more frequently in the car, at first for short distances, then slowly increase distance and you will soon be ready for trips. They will get over the puking problem gradually.
Here is what I did - at first when she was young, even 15 mins in the car would get her to puke. I started taking her in the car out in the early morning, drove for 10 mins and then did the usual 1hr walk elsewhere and brought her back by car. After 3-4 months of doing this, she soon started to think the car is just a tool to get to the walking spot. I soon withdrew the car plan. Later, trips to relatives' houses in the car like 10-15 km away made her realize the car is ALSO for pleasure trips.
when taking the dog out for long trips, few things to be kept in mind
- stop frequently (like once in an hour) and walk it around or else they tend to get restless and dizzy.
- if stopping for meals at highway restaurants (most dont allow pets inside anyway), dont leave the dog alone in the car. Instead the people need to split and go for meals; someone should stay with the dog in the meanwhile.
- if travelling in ghats, stop once in half an hour
- Give it water when you stop if they tend to drool a lot
- spread some old cloth over your car upholstery, just in case the dog pukes your upholstery doesn't take a beating
- if it is not sunny, open the rear window a bit. All dogs do not enjoy the A/C. Mine surprisingly does, she will put her head towards the AC vent and push us away :Frustrati

Thanks a ton! Yes she is registered with KCI. Head office in Chennai actually. All indian registrations are done with them for ownership and breed pedigree papers
Anyone knows where I can get some good nylon (no leather) HARNESS for dogs in Chennai? I want to let our current lab pups to be free-roaming, and use the harness to take them out.
I am usually against choking the pets with a neck-band.One of our earlier dog's vocal chord got damaged and it barely "wuffed" for a few times every day. :Frustrati

The vet used to come at our place. I think I shall switch the vet or can I vaccinate myself?
She jumps in & around the Car when I drive-in and once or twice, have had to let her in fearing her claws.
Shall try taking her out, though let this hair-shedding season pass on.

She forcibly makes me open my room in afternoons to get her nap :uncontrol She is that addicted, though I am yet to take her out in the Car.
Even now, she has put her two feet on my chair asking me to stop browsing, play with her a bit prior to going to bed. After automobiles, she is the ultimate stress-buster for me :)
My pet is a street. She scared one of my friend's pom so much so that he called me up to have a dekko. Couldn't resist bringing her home. (Its my 3rd pet and first street and I shall continue to keep streets, they are so less fussy and (less) demanding)
@rajesh - My pet is never tied, though she has a dog collar. Keep a tab on its firmness. It should be loose as much that you can roll your finger from the insides (sorry for the crude explanation )

Nice of you to adopt a street dog. I too have a family of street dogs living in my garage (technically they almost always stay inside the house boundaries). Cannot keep them inside as they are at daggers drawn with the family of cats that lives indoor. So with 4-5 dogs, we can sleep rest assured that cars in our open portico do not get nicked in any way.
Also - if you feed them correctly and provide minimal vaccination / medical attention, they tend to live a very long life. Rugged evolution and survival of the fittest has made them devoid of any genetic diseases that plague some of the better known breeds (hip dysplasia etc)
P.S: Did i say they stop traffic both ways in the road when someone from our house pulls out a car ? :)

Agree.
They are really rugged.
Stuff that would take a pedigree out for the count, they can just shrug off(illnesses, i mean.not a car running into them).
And if you look at them they are very pretty and affectionate!
Where i stayed earlier, there wer tons of strays, who used to eat about a bucks worth of "Parle-g"s every week.
At my In laws house, my wife was practically raising 11 odd strays as pets(2 meals a day, vets etc).
The best bit was, they used to sitting all around her colony, and were a constant SPG :) for her.
One used to spot her, when she was coming back, or going somewhere, and then sort of sent out a sonar signal to all the rest, and they all used to converge around her.
And dare anybody try walking towards her with even a hint of malice.
Even 4 years post marriage, and her parents having shifted out of that colony, they still recognize her, even when she's sitting inside the car!!
4 years!!
phew!
EDIT: @pramodkumar : "
FUR-niture" ...HILARIOUS!!!!! Going to be used next time, for sure!
people are complaining about dog hair everywhere in my house, so this is what i came up with
NON-PET OWNERS who visit our home. (1) Don't complain about our pets. They live here, you don't. (2) If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That's why they call it 'Fur'-nitu re. (3) Chances are, I love my pets more than I like you. (4) To you, they are animals. To me, they are family ..who are hairy, walk on all fours & don't talk back.

Well said ;)
Going OT but; been to Suresh aka Cammamder Kennel ( yah the spelling is wrong). I was very very impressed at how clean his house was; no smell, nothing. He has GD, Rotts,Pugs, etc at his house and his Rott was sitting with me on the sofa, still!
something related to pets, dogs specially, i chanced upon a very interesting programme on Nat Geo last night called "The Dog Whisperer". It was really an eye opener and a must for all dogs. Theres this guy from the US, must be an dog behaviour specialist who has the simplest solutions to the most difficult problems faced by dog owners regarding their pets. I think its a must for all dog owners. It comes sometime in the late evenings. Do check it out.
Here is a picture of my American White Shepherd . 1 year old, 38 kgs, 26 inches. Its a purebred registered with the AWSA.
