Clearly, BYD doesn’t believe in carrying a knife to a gunfight. It is bringing its Denza premium brand to Europe this year, with a line-up headed by the bold, electric and PHEV-powered Z9 GT.

To get its design right, it’s roped in Audi’s head of design Wolfgang Egger. This, it hopes will silence its critics on the design front.

Denza will initially sell its flagship grand tourer, which offers 952bhp in EV form, and will be followed by a seven-seat MPV called the D9.

Denza would eventually offer a line-up of four to six models in Europe, also including SUVs and off-roaders. As well as the Z9 and D9, Denza currently offers the N7 and N9 SUVs in China.

The four-seat Z9 GT is a Porsche Taycan and Porsche Panamera rival that sits on an advanced platform called e3 that has been developed specifically for Denza.

It features an 800V electrical architecture that
allows of ultra-fast charging, cell-to-body battery integration to increase rigidity and the ability for a drivetrain featuring three electric motors.

While Denza has yet to confirm European specifications, the Chinese-market electric version features a 308bhp motor on the front axle and a pair of 322bhp motors that can run at up to 21,000rpm at the rear.

That gives a combined system output of 952bhp and allows for a 0-62mph time of 3.4sec and, with a 100kWh BYD Blade battery, a range of 391 miles on the Chinese test cycle.

BYD’s CEO Li says “BYD has technology plus design”, claiming that Danza’s styling – led by former Audi designer Wolfgang Egger – would be another key selling point.

Whether one likes China or not, whether one likes their anti-India stance or not one cannot but admire the strides they are making in the automotive world in a planned co-ordinated manner. The European car makers, especially the Germans might still adapt and survive. i hope they do. But the American car makers are at great risk of getting boxed into the US market it only with their trucks masquerading as cars.

Given how much trouble the German makers find themselves in China, both American and European automakers are in the same boat. I would argue that the Europeans are in much bigger trouble as they can't do software as well as the Americans, and the American domestic car market is massive and can easily keep the American automakers afloat.

Front looks like a fusion of BYD and Peugeot. Hope the car in the picture isn’t the one designed by the Audi designer. As good as it is on the specs front, can’t imagine the looks being liked among the European crowd in Porsches.

BYD may have Porsche in its sights. But it isnt there just yet.

Its got most bits right with some that need improvement and some that are better.

Power, fit and finish, stability and high speed braking are as good as that on a Porsche.

Handling and driving pleasure certainly needs to improve - but knowing the Chinese its only a matter of time before they get that right too.

Long term reliability is an unknown quantity and brand equity doesn't exist.

And it’s not quite the same when you arrive in a Porsche at the Casino de Monte-Carlo in Monaco.





However BYD gives you an almost equivalent car at about a quarter of the price.

And for most folks that would be hard to beat.

Well, BYD lacks the legacy and years of experience in fine tuning cars to go anywhere near Porsche! BYD may have deep pockets and may have made great strides in the recent times (courtesy of recruiting talent from European car manufacturers) and is probably manufacturing the best EVs of the world, however I am yet to see any car manufacturer from China make an ICE vehicle that can compare to the European marques (let alone Porsche!).

Legacy takes a lot of time and clearly BYD is on the right track. Not having legacy is not a con for BYD

Denza Z previews electric Porsche 911 rival

BYD-owned premium brand Denza has lifted the covers off its Porsche 911 and Maserati Granturismo rival at the Shanghai Motor Show.

Named the Denza Z, it's an electric coupé with a cab-forward design typical of midship sports cars. However, it can also seat two small rear passengers, in similar fashion to the 911 and Mercedes-AMG GT.

Detailed specifications are yet to be revealed, but its low-set, wide-hipped design and large rear wing clearly signal a performance-focused intent.
