Observations:
1. Registration/Sales change YoY - 26% increase, MoM - 32% increase. Super month for EVs sales best ever month. All thanks to
2. Tata and Citroen are the only two players in mass market to lose volumes YoY. The competition is heating up and Tata is losing market share to new launches. Though it is looking like that Tata's volume will stabilize between 4000-4500.
3. MG - MG volumes also seem to be stabilizing between the 3500-4000 range.
4. Hyundai - They are struggling to sell Creta EV. They have sold the same number of EVs in 2 months which Mahindra sold in half a month.
5. Mahindra - Their sales shot past Hyundai with only half a month of deliveries. There is much more to come from them. It is surprising to see cars priced at 27L+ and 30L+ selling in such numbers. This goes on to show that India is a price sensitive market but Indians pay the right price for the right product
6. BMW - This is their 4th MoM sales increase. Another example of right product at the right price.

Amazing to see Tata win the race against MG, MG Windsor's sales have stablised and I don't see them improving from here on. The failure on MG to go pass Tata despite the Windsor assault is on back of two outdated products- Comet and ZS EV.

ZS EV especially has turned dead, it soon needs an update

I am advising folks interested to buy Creta EV to wait 2 more months because Hyundai is definitely going to sell the car on 2-3 lakh discount in sometime, the car is a non mover and inventory is already over 2 months

Tata, albeit coming on top this month, has had a year-on-year decline of 34% in sales, which is worrying. This can be mainly attributed to the well-priced offerings from the competition, such as MG Windsor and the new Born Electric offerings from Mahindra. Moreover, Hyundai with its Creta EV has also got a few hundred units of sales, which altogether meant the demand for the Tata EVs has dwindled.

Re: March 2025: Electric Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Kerala and Delhi are Setting the Pace for EVs in India.

Kerala is setting the benchmark for electric passenger vehicle (EPV) adoption with an impressive 9.1% penetration rate in March 2025, the highest in the country and substantially above the national average of 2.9%. This coastal state has consistently outperformed other regions, showing a marked increase from its 5.4% penetration rate for the overall 2025 fiscal year.
The state boasts the highest per-capita expenditure among all major Indian states, with residents enjoying significant disposable income. Kerala's consumerist society is well-known for its appetite for premium products, from gold to high-end automobiles and costly mobile phones like iPhones, making it fertile ground for EV adoption despite higher upfront costs.
Additionally, Kerala's residential pattern provides a natural advantage for EV ownership. Unlike other high-income regions such as Mumbai and Bangalore, Kerala's population predominantly lives in individual houses and villas rather than apartment complexes, making home charging infrastructure significantly more accessible. Residents can easily park and charge electric vehicles overnight without depending on public charging infrastructure.
The state also benefits from comparatively lower power prices than metropolitan centers like Mumbai, reducing the operational costs of EVs even further. Combined with an existing "car culture" despite strong public transport infrastructure, Keralites have embraced electric vehicles as status symbols and practical transportation options.
This, coupled with the state's historical openness to environmentally friendly technologies, has created ideal conditions for electric vehicle adoption.

Delhi:

Delhi continues to dominate the electric three-wheeler (E3W) segment with an extraordinary 86.3% penetration rate as of March 2025. The capital territory has maintained its leadership position throughout FY25, ending the fiscal year with an 83.5% adoption rate, demonstrating the near-complete electrification of its three-wheeler fleet.
Delhi's exceptional E3W adoption can be attributed to several key factors. The capital's notorious air pollution crisis has prompted aggressive policy interventions by the local government, which has actively incentivized the transition to electric vehicles across all segments, with particular emphasis on commercial vehicles like three-wheelers that typically operate for longer hours daily.
These regional success stories provide valuable insights into what drives EV adoption in different market segments. Kerala's consumer market has embraced personal electric mobility, while Delhi's commercial vehicle segment has undergone a remarkable transformation.

As India continues its push toward electric mobility, the success stories in Kerala's passenger vehicle market and Delhi's three-wheeler segment, along with the nationwide E3W transition, provide valuable blueprints for accelerating adoption in other vehicle categories and regions.

Already told before Creta EV is not going to set the sales chart on Fire. It is neither here nor there. It doesn't have a Fresh Design, It's specs are par for the course and doesn't seem great VFM. Add it all this, the Battery Overhang doesn't inspire confidence. Pound for Pound, I feel the Tata Curvv is a stronger proposition. And ofcourse the new Mahindra EV twins have completely stole the thunder from Creta EV launch.

MG Windsor sales will double if they introduce the higher battery pack available in ZS EV which is anyway dead. There is nothing to worry that sales will be cannibalized. If they don't act quickly, Mahindra will steal the march and MG will lag behind in a few months time.

Re: March 2025: Electric Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Hello,

I am surprised how no one has yet spoken about the proposed tax cut on ev vehicles, cars, lithium ion, tyres etc etc and the approximate effect of it on the car prices.

Should we wait and watch as the electric car prices are surely going to come down. Please elaborate specially on byd and tesla cars.

Cheers.....

Let it materialize; it's still a proposal at the moment. Once it materializes, we will see the effect it has on EV prices. Considering the tariffs imposed on Indian products by the US, I don't think India needs to incentivize Tesla anymore. However, there could be a situation where India does incentivize American Imports into India with lower duties just to get the tariffs for Indian
Imports into the US removed.

Moreover as regards BYD, there is a slim chance India reduces import duties on cars from China. The only way for BYD cars to get cheaper is if it follows the JSW-MG route, but that too doesn't seem to be on the cards, just yet.

We would have to wait and watch how this pans out.
