Minister claims India set to become world’s largest manufacturer of EVs by 2030

Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport & Highways, has said that India is set to become the world’s largest manufacturer of EVs by 2030.

Minister claims India set to become world’s largest manufacturer of EVs by 2030-nitingadkari0628101116x9_0.jpg

“When our government came to power in 2014, I spoke about electric vehicles. At that time, no one believed it, but today it’s a reality,” Gadkari said.

“Back then, the Indian automotive industry was valued at Rs 14 lakh crore. Recently, it grew to Rs 22 lakh crore, surpassing Japan to become the world’s third largest automobile market, following USA and China.” The minister went on to state, “Now, we are aiming to be the No.1 manufacturer of electric vehicles in the world by 2030.”

Battery technology is evolving at a rapid pace, supported by ongoing research in battery chemistry. Gadkari believes that the popularity of EVs will continue to rise as lithium-ion batteries become cheaper.

re: Minister claims India set to become world’s largest manufacturer of EVs by 2030

How many times do we have to tolerate these lies?

Do his statements even warrant a new thread here? Especially when most of them turn out to be false.

Another thread to beat the dead horse.

Anyways, if Mr. Gadkari wants to improve the sales of EVs, he should compel the likes of Tatas and Hyundais to price their EVs properly and not charge 3-4 lakh premiums just to discount them by 3-4 lakhs later when people figure it out. We have seen this happen in sub-4m Tata cars and the XUV400. The discounts will be even bigger when they happen in the Creta and above segments.

The only way all of the above can possibly come true is if BYD (and not just Tesla) is allowed to build its plant in India. It will be a death knell for many indegenous manufacturers but it is what it is, if that's what the Hon. Minister wants.

One harsh word here; BALDERDASH.
All of these statements are mere jingoistic propaganda.
Anyone with access to information can clearly see where China is and where we are.
Someone sent me something last night. About the two countries and their respective startup systems.

It’s very sad, but undeniably true.

Delulu. This would be throwing the word "Manufacturer" loosely. India has 0 capability to make an EV battery, Recycle an EV battery, make the digital displays and even old-gen microprocessors used in cars. Make in India has come to be understood as Import Parts from China, assemble in India and add a few locally sourced components while you're at it!! Only asset India has is it's the largest population (market) for products, which will only make sense when the said population has better purchasing power and access to higher standard of living - which in current age of lay offs and AI does not seem to be happening. Only a strengthening Rupee as a result of India producing World-class goods and services that other countries want will this dream perhaps come true.

At this point, I think we should just club together all posts related to the tall claims and fake promises made by the minister under a single thread rather than dedicating a separate thread each time.

I respect his enthusiasm, but misplaced enthusiasm often ends up doing more damage than doing nothing.

How come is that true? If you get the exact information there are more than a thousand 2W EV makers in China compared to a handful in India and only 4 of them sell more than 10k a month. And 4W EV makers are hardly 2 domestic companies apart from international players. If you include FORCE Motors that is yet to make an EV, it adds up to three. Going as per the current trend despite our protective industry, it looks like BYD and MG will race ahead of the 2 top domestic manufacturing companies.

That statement of Nitin Gadkari makes no sense at all.

Depends on what constitutes an EV.

- Electric Cars
- Electric Two wheelers
- Electric commerical vehicles (3/4 wheelers, city buses)
- e-Rickshaws
- RC Hobby cars
- Kids toy cars

Based on what logic? Why take something you saw on social media at face value, treating it as undeniable truth? While some may embrace a defeatist attitude, must this mindset be propagated everywhere?

India is brimming with innovative ventures across various fields like AI, defense, drones, robotics etc. Instead of merely accepting information without scrutiny, we should respect and acknowledge those who have committed themselves to building and funding to new ideas fueled by conviction, resilience, and intelligence. This defeatist mentality undermines the hard work of many aspiring entrepreneurs.

Does it matter though? In what universe will India beat China no matter what constitutes an EV? China is the manufacturing hub of the world - we have a long long way to catch-up. This sort of a statement will need decades of innovation and aggressive government policy to materialize, not a magic trick to happen in 5 years!

I don't see the problem here. Nitin Gadkari definitely has the right to say anything nonsensical given that today is 1st April so yeah, happy April fool's day !

What part of "Aiming to be" did you all not understand ?

I am not being sarcastic. When anybody aims for something, you aim for the top. Doesn't matter if we don't reach it. Show me an olympian who aims for the silver medal.

To be fair, we should give credit where it is due. This minister prodded, coerced our auto industry to move into EVs. This was years ago when our auto innovation was in deep slumber.

If the statement was to increase EV penetration in the Indian market, the comment would have been well received. But to make a bold claim in the global context, especially when China has leap-frogged over everyone else, in that context, this statement is a joke.

One big driver of EV acceptance is the charging infrastructure, mostly on highways and from what I read, most of it is driven by private players and not the government. In fact, someone on a different thread pointed out, that the best you can expect from the government is to not interfere in the organic growth.

For your information, without going into details,

I am very much a part of the startup world for the last 15 years. In our own small way, we have proudly pioneered several things which touch the eco system in a positive way.

What I posted seemed to be an article. Which was sent to me by a friend.

But if you pause for a moment - there is real truth in whats written there. It may be unpalatable but it is undeniably the truth.

China is indeed light years ahead of us in many ways, too complex to even imagine. Anyone can see that. For us to wilfully not accept/ acknowledge the fact, is just living in denial.
