— Performance is good. It ain’t a Tesla Performance but, it’s no slouch either.
— 3-modes of Regen. The 3rd option is really good with decent stopping power without using

— Pathetic range of just 225 miles (360 kms)
— Need to “start” the car using a Start/Stop Button
— DC fast charging options not as extensive as a Tesla and just 100KWH DC charging.
— No spare tire but, it gives back a lot of boot space not that it matters to me.
— Not a big fan of its boxy looks considering I'm upgrading from a Model 3 Performance.
-- Expensive car with not too many standard items as part of features.
-- Exterior Design and Alloys should have been better considering the price-pont.

Background/Preface/Booking Experience

P.S : There will be a lot of references to a Tesla as I will be comparing or sizing up this car to it. How and Why I got is briefly mentioned in my previous ownership thread which was a 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance :

I love cars and especially performance oriented and I was living in my naive world of Tesla Model 3 Performance enjoying every single day of fun, thrills and street light to street light drag racing and blissfully ignorant of the fact that each day Elon Musk is dropping prices of the car hitting the owners like me who bought it at the highest price point.

It never struck me to go back and check how much the price has been dropping over the last 2 years and especially in the last year.

Well, the realization dawned on me when a friend shared a video of increasing protests against Tesla when I was in India 3 weeks ago. He recommended that I should check the resale value which I did as soon as I hit the ground in Seattle. It shocked the hell out of me that the car that I paid through my nose is now worth less than half. I immediately decided to replace it with another EV as I needed an EV in garage primarily because we drive a lot here.

Typical American drives about 15,000 miles. Me not being a typical American, I drive at least 12,000 miles in a year and out of which 60-70% of the driving is for pleasure/fun as I work hybrid and travel a bit. Hence, an EV makes a lot of sense. Besides, I was enjoying the combination of a Gas and EV which I feel is a perfect combo to balance costs as well as fun.

My BMW does “ fun duties” over the weekend when I go into the mountains to carve some twisty roads.

On a side note, me and some of my friends have the same “nasty habit” of test driving cars on weekends just for the heck of it. I drove so many cars that I lost count and it’s rare that a car impresses me.

Being a BMW fanboy, I drove almost their entire stable and none of their electric cars impressed me (except the i4 M50 and the mighty IXM60). I never looked at Mercedes thinking they will be sub-par in comparison to a BMW EV.

Couple of weeks ago, when I had actually decided that it’s time to get rid of the Tesla, I thought of only 2-3 brands which is Polestar, Cadillac and Mercedes (this was actually added based on my friend’s advice).

With that in mind, top most choice was to check out the Polestar 3 which looked great in pictures with its radical exterior design .Coincidentally, they were offering $20,000 to convert Tesla owners to Polestar.

Me and friend/neighbor (Ashu) quickly scheduled a test drive of the Polestar 3 and both were totally unimpressed. It felt big, heavy and sluggish despite the only models they have available is their top end and all performance cars. Their interiors though of high quality felt awkwardly put together, especially the front screen which looks like an Amazon Echo Screen.

Besides above, the customer service experience was not that great. We got to drive the car only for 20 miles and these cars are so high priced ($85k-$95K) so even with $20K rebate, it didn’t feel worth the price. I wonder who will buy these products at this price point.

Next in line was the Mercedes as my pal is an ex-Mercedes (C300) customer which he too traded in 6-months ago for an Audi Q8 ( His garage consists of an Audi Q8 E-Tron, Volvo XC90 and a Tesla Highland) and he insisted me to check out the Mercedes.

I reluctantly went along with him. His sales guy John was a great guy and he gave us EQE for a test drive.

While the EQE was most definitely next level luxurious but, being a bigger car, I didn’t feel the punch that I normally look for in a car driving experience.

For me the greatest joy of driving a car is the driving experience, if I don’t like the driving experience, it does not matter what features or how luxurious the car is, I will discard the option.

On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised with the EQB 300 as it was super peppy, fun to drive and handled pretty good even though it’s specs on paper is not so exciting (230 Horsepower and 389NM Torque).

Well, I realized later that I’m spoiled silly by my Tesla Performance and BMW X3M40i ownership as they are next level speed and acceleration beasts.

I need to step-down and think like a normal human being and from that perspective EBQ 300 is still pretty fast. Not long ago (2018), I used to drive a Mazda CX-9 which was 225 horsepower and I was elated with that power in a gas car. Imagine the same power in a smaller body shape and in electric would be decent fun even for a speed junkie like me.

When we are doing the test drives at Mercedes, the Tesla showroom is bang opposite to them and there were huge protests.Amidst the Tesla protests and the entire road was covered with protesters when we were there on a Friday evening. I was now even more determined to get rid of the Tesla.

That morning, did a recheck of quote with Tesla and they dropped the resale price by another $2K ( In less than a week from my previous checkpoint). I was furious and decided to buy the Mercedes and cross the road and join those protestors.

As they say timing is everything . Apart from the demo car of EBQ which I enjoyed driving, there was only one fresh car in their showroom parked in 1st floor. Which was White Exterior and Beige Interiors and this was the last piece of 2024 model (December manufactured) in their showroom which had an MSRP of $63K + 10.5% taxes for sale and thanks to my pal Ashu, he gave me a deal that I just could not refuse.

I had some parallel conversations going on with external buyers and if I had to sell Tesla to them, this deal would have become a lot more expensive.

Ashu is living in US for 30+ years so I let the veteran do the math as he knows the loopholes like federal taxes, state taxes, rebates, trade in tax rebates, county/zip code based discount and all that finance jazz.

He pulled every trick in the book and kept lowering the price of the overall deal. When I look at what John initially quoted to what I got the deal for was eye watering and they also rolled over the negative equity into the new payments so I was super happy with the overall number and had a big grin slapped on my face like a “happy puppy”.

Top 3 Reasons for deciding on the 2024 Mercedes EQB 300 :

1. Drive was fantastic (Perfect combo of luxury & comfort) and overall felt quite luxurious.
2. Undeniable attraction, pride and joy of owning the 3-Pointed Star.
3. Finally, the fabulous trade-in deal.

2024 Mercedes Benz EQB 300- Delivery & Pooja

As you could see from the previous post, everything happened so fast and unexpected that I was not even prepared or knew that I will be buying a new car anytime soon.

With family still being in India, I had to bank on my close pals to join me in the joy of taking delivery of the car. Based on mom’s directions with respect to when we should take the car ( Ignoring the aspect of the bashings that I got for buying yet another new car…), we picked up the car on March 12th, 2025.

Ashu and I reached the showroom in the Tesla which was handed over and after some paperwork, we were taken to the bay area behind the showroom where the car was prepped with a bow and looked pretty as a peach. After a few pictures with car, we were off on our way to meet another friend who could not meet us at showroom due to work situation.

Doston ko party nahi de tho kya gaadi khareedi (If you don’t treat friends for a meal, why buy a car..lol). We met at a nice biryani joint for a meal.

Next day was Thursday, an important day for us and fortunately had some great weather too. In between work, did the pooja outside our home and prayed to the almighty god to keep us safe when driving this beauty.

Now it’s ready to be “Driven”.

There is a funny story here. My American neighbour next day knocked at my door and when I opened it, he looked alarmed and said " I'm sorry to say someone seems to have vandalized your car. He asked me to step out and pointed this to me and said, someone made SWASTIK sign on the car.

I almost rolled on the floor and laughed.

Opened my phone and showed him this important hindu sign and explained him that it's a sign of Happiness and Prosperity. He was like " Woah" and we both laughed and I told him- I owe him a drink for keeping an eye on the car. Cheers to the neighbor.

Performance & Steering Wheel

2024 Mercedes Benz EQB 300 comes with a 77.5Kwh battery that is good for 220 miles (350kms) range compared to Tesla EV’s and probably because the EQB is not a grounds up EV like the Tesla. Driving a Tesla is a totally different experience vs. driving a non-grounds up EV. Here you focus more on other aspects of the car like luxury, silence, build quality, materials used vs. the outright driving experience which is undoubtedly best in a Tesla.

However, Mercedes has done a fine job to make it feel like an electric vehicle with two key features- Silence and Instant Acceleration which is a trademark of any EV.

With just 230 horsepower under the hood, this is not a performance vehicle by any standards but, it is not a slouch either. It accelerates instantly and never makes you feel that it’s short on power. In an electric disguise it’s plenty of power and enough to keep you satisfied for those quick accelerations, overtaking maneuvers and merging fast on high speed freeways.

Between 2018-2020, I used to drive the Mazda CX9 with similar 225 horsepower and I used to be enthralled with its performance but, since then I moved up the horsepower numbers so much that I don’t find anything below 400 horsepower exciting. I must say that the BMW and Tesla have spoilt me silly.

It has 4 Modes-Eco, Comfort, Sports and Individual- Power, Suspension, Steering & ESP can be configured in the Individual option which is what I’m using currently 75% of the time.

Sports mode is super fun and brings back the memories that I used to have in a Tesla. Sports mode of this car is equal to the Chill mode of the Tesla Performance which is a huge compliment.

If the car is not thrilling to drive from an acceleration perspective then that’s not the car for me. And, this baby moves really well in Sports mode and makes my drive thrilling which is what I look for in a car and the primary reason to select this car over the EQE which felt little sluggish due to size and weight compared to EBQ which feels much lighter and agile.

Steering wheel- It’s brand new for 2024 and unlike its competitor (BMW) there is no funny trapezoidal or flat bottom style. It’s simple and traditional round steering wheel but, is tad bit larger in size for my small’ish hands. Till date, I haven't come across a steering wheel (size and feel wise) better than my X3M40i- That feeling is another level.

Mercedes steering wheel feels great to hold and gives a luxurious feel. However, the feel is on the softer side though the response to input is sharp and car moves in direction where it’s steered. Unlike Tesla, which felt quite taut this does not feel like it and more tweaked towards comfort and luxury (if it makes any sense).

New for 2024 LCI for the steering wheel is also the touch panels on steering and has many key features that can be used (“sliding up or sideways) on the touch panel. Pretty cool stuff !!

Steering has 2 options- Comfort and Sport and feels direct and gives good feedback. Comfort is little too soft for my liking so I configured to always remain in SPORT and also use "Individual" a lot which is again configurable where everything is set up on the stiffer side.

Overall, It’s not a sports car but, it’s smooth, extremely silent, luxurious feeling and reasonably powerful with a strong linear acceleration to keep even the speed junkies like me satisfied to some extent (the key word here is some extent...lol). Under my lead foot, I’m still the first off the lights each and every time…lol!!

Ride & Handling.

Ride-

This is where you will forget any downside of this car and start loving it. The whole suspension set up is created to give you the perfect balance between sporty to luxury. I would put the ratio between 75% comfort and 25% sporty (only when you slot it in SPORTS MODE) otherwise it's comfortable, soft and glides over anything that you throw it in.

The car is shod on 19” inch Continental Proconctacts (235/50/R19) which is one of the most popular tire from Continentals for the EV industry (Though my favorites are the Extreme contact Sport) and the car just glides on any road imperfections or dents in the roads which is far and few out here in Washington. When the surface is good which is 80% of the time, it feels like you are sitting on feathers and car is gliding and not driving in absolute silence.

Which brings me to the comparison of silence with a Tesla. Even with double paned windows, Tesla could not achieve silence like I experience in the Mercedes. The EQB is at least 50% more quieter in the cabin. There is just no sound from outside. Absolutely fantastic.

Handling-

Whenever I buy a new car this is another aspect that I have to be satisfied other than the power/acceleration part, it needs to be a decent handler or it gets stricken off my list.

Being an SUV, the handling is definitely not like any sedan but, I’m sure lot of people will agree with me that SUV’s have come a long way. The gap between how you feel driving a sedan vs. SUV is closing as the SUV’s keep getting better. 90% of the times, SUV’s can handle as well as the sedan on regular roads (Freeways, Highways and almost equally fun on backroads).

EQB is no corner carver and, cannot be compared to the M3P which was a corner carver. But, it handles decent for a car of this shape and design and I still throw it into the corners (we have twisty roads everywhere in Washington starting from right outside my door) albeit not at the same speed and it feels good.

Exteriors

Well. I need to start off my thoughts by confessing straight off the bat, not a big fan of the exterior looks. Exterior used to matter me a lot but, when I drove this car, the interiors and how it drove made me forget the exteriors. I bought it also because it was White in color and had my favorite interior color. If no, I would have probably put this purchase on hold.

Mercedes decided to take a quick route to get into the Electric Vehicle market by converting their gas powered GLB into a EV car. Their first EV version of this product was released in 2022. The one that I bought is their 2nd iteration or LCI as they call it in the auto world.

Mercedes Benz has given its smallest Electric SUV a rather nice makeover for 2024 (This is the LCI model) with a redesigned grille, updated lighting and quite a bit of interior tweaks where the build quality has been improved from not just first iteration but, also compared to their GLB models.

The grille now features the same star pattern as the company's other all-electric EQ models, and the front end features a light bar that runs along the top. The front bumper and taillamps have also been revamped. The infotainment system has been updated with more advanced software.

Based on the internal combustion engined Mercedes-Benz GLB model, the EQB primary USP was a 7-seater (mine is a 5-seat option and 7-seat can be had with just $1250 as an option).

Though largely similar to the GLB petrol powered SUV, there are some giveaway touches to the EQB. At the front, the solid black grill pate forgoes the chrome stripe through the centre and gains daylight running LEDs that stretch the full width, going above both headlights and across the top of the grill. The headlights join the grill to create one large faceplate on the car, which is still dominated by the huge three-pointed star badge.*

The rear is also distinct, with the rear lights stretching all the way across in the back, mimicking the design at the front. This gives the car a slightly more modern feel.

It does feel like a proper SUV though. It has those big slightly squared off wheel arches, which houses the 19 inch alloys and proper roof bars so you can mount roof racks or a storage box. It was originally 18" wheels but, this car was optioned with 19" which cost an additional $1200 for the 19" inches.

I feel it would look even more handsome on a 20” AMG alloys.

Mercedes Adaptive Headlights. They have a very good throw, width and reach. No complains here.

Interiors

As you step into the beige interior cabin, it feels spacious and feels like entering in a world of luxury. I love light colored interiors as they make interiors lively and spacious compared to black or dark colored interiors.

The build quality inside the cabin is superb and does exude luxury. Wherever you touch in the cabin, it feels high quality and soft touch materials. The only area where I feel the Mercedes skimmed is the stalks on the wheel which do not feel premium.

In terms of tech, you get a dual 10. 25-inch screens. Placed side by side, they create a continuous display from behind the wheel to the centre console. It’s a simpler display than you get on the higher end Mercedes models but it still runs the latest MBUX system which is simple to use and visually superior to many other cars of its price range.

Biggest missing feature in my particular car which is fully loaded except 2 key items 1.) Burmeister Audio 2. ) HUD

If I had configured the car, I would have never missed these 2 features and this is where I hate buying a car that is already configured.

But, I was helpless so have to live without these 2 important features. Well, I won’t miss the Burmeister Audio as the regular audio in the car is pretty good (better than my BMW but, inferior to the Tesla which is still the best audio I heard in a car).

What I’m going to miss is the HUD- Once you get used to Heads Up Display, it’s hard to live without it. That was the biggest grouch of mine in a Tesla.

MBUX is the latest version and is far superior to the iDrive 8 system in my BMW. Perhaps, the iDrive 9 is now equivalent to the MBUX.but, I wouldn’t know that.

Another amazing improvement over the iDrive is the MBUX voice assistant which is hands-down better than the BMW.

BMW voice assistant would struggle to understand you and would more often either not return or return with wrong outputs. MBUX gets correct each and every time and is also quick to respond.

The whole panoramic roof makes the cabin feel even more spacious and the best part is this can be opened.

All functions on the door. It took me some time to get used to this new life.



Luxurious and super spacious back seat. As rightly pointed out by 1400rpm, the rear bench is on higher side but, it's comfortable. It's just that you sit slightly higher.

Battery, Range & Maintenance

Charging at Electrify America- After the initial hiccup, it's a breeze.

Mercedes EBQ 300 4Matic uses dual motors and is an AWD comes with a 70.5kWh battery, which delivers up to 230 miles of range. The only and biggest downside of this car is the extremely low range which is good for pottering around the city. If I go to work and back, it's 50 miles round trip or similar distances when I go to Seattle or Bellevue so which means that I can make 2-rounds trips or 2 days of work trips before I need to plug it in.

If this car had a better range like 300 miles, then it would have been a perfection all-around. But, hey I use the EV for city runs even when It was the Tesla and used the BMW for longer trips.

For charging, it can achieve a 11kW AC home charging and up to 100kW DC fast charging – which means around 30 mins from 10-80%. Which is impressive and fairly standard for a car at this price.

I was able to squeeze out a deal of 2-years worth of FREE charging at these locations across America :

1. Electrify America
2. Chargepoint

This was offered only after pushing and insisting on it. What it means is roughly a savings of at least $2400 on Electricity cost assuming you spend $100/month if charging at home. And, savings of > $4000 if charging at external DC fast charging locations like Electrify America and/or Charge-point locations as they charge anywhere between $0.48-$0.60 kWH which is pretty steep.

There was some initial teething trouble connecting my VIN to the Electrify America account which took a couple of calls to Mercedes Benz call center. Their service again is mind blowing good and the call lands in Atlanta so you get to speak to someone who knows their stuff and service is instant and super helpful.

I can’t say the same about BMW as their service over the phone is not that great (spoke to them only 3 times in 4 years of ownership).

For Charge-point, they gave me a credit card with money preloaded that is to be tapped at Chargepoint locations to start the charging. Both these companies are available near my home and also plenty of them north and south of where we live.

I plan to use the free charging as much as possible but, in reality it’s not always feasible, so I bought a adapter ($120) from Amazon that goes on top of my Tesla Charger and now I can also charge at home using the AC unit.

I have charged once at home to test how it works and it’s flawless and charges about 12%-15% per hour so within 6 hours it will charge from 10%-80% which is perfect for overnight charging at rock bottom prices of $0.10kwh.

The regeneration braking has 3 options and I absolutely love the “maximum region” option as it slows the car down abruptly and good when driving alone (passengers might not like the abrupt slowing down).

Another point is this car does not come to a standstill, you need to use brake pedal to bring it to a stop unlike the Tesla where you never use the brake pedal. I miss this feature from Tesla.

Regen can be toggled using the paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Left Paddle is to apply region step wise up (3-options) and Right Paddle is to disengage step-wise down (3-Options).

Mercedes Navigation is as good as BMW Navigation. I used to be impressed with BMW Nav. But, Merc is no less. Fantastic in-built navigation.

Just key in the closest charger and it will take you there. Simple !



Chargepoint- Largest Charging Network in USA. But, somehow I don't like them.



Electrify America. These fellas are good. I have both EA and Chargepoint close to home. So, I'm sorted as I have these free charging options right outside home.



Charged from 40% to 90% and it took 42 minutes. Not the greatest of time. 40 mins sitting in the car is not my cup of tea.




Charge has started. Now time to sit and wait.





Charing completed and now it's 90% SOC. It can go up to 221 miles in this SOC. So that makes the full range as little over 240 miles (385 kms). Not a great range for sure.



After each charge, I get an email & text letting me know how much the charge costed. Mercedes adds $10 each time the balance drops below $5. Pretty cool. eh?

Btw, this is all FREE to me.

Some observations- Nice things & Some Annoying things.

1. Massage seats for the front and passenger seats is pretty nice. It massages the butt and back with decent intensity.

2. When a car passes, the BSM (Blind Spot Monitoring) gets activated and it's in RED in color unlike YELLOW in BMW. The cool thing is the side door panel inside also lights up when the BSM gets activated. It's like a double highlight to warn the driver. It's a cool feature.

3. This car has the same cool feature as my BMW. I just kick under the back of the car and boot opens up. It's darn useful out here as we are perennially having our hands full with groceries.

4. Augmented Reality Navigation- It's the best feature of the car. It turns on real-time video with arrow marks of where you need to turn. I shared a video of that in this review. Check it out. Absolutely amazing feature.

6. There is a "Mercedes ME" button on the top near the roof which if pressed in the event of a breakdown will call Mercedes and they will send you an immediate assistance. This is a 24X7 services and free for the first 3-years. How cool is that??

7. When you slot in reverse, there is a click sound which is the Mercedes Logo flipping open to use the review camera and the car moves really fast backwards when you take your feet of the A-pedal. It's a bit annoying.

8. MBUX system which is the latest version comes with a nice feature-. You don't have to say "Hey Mercedes" for some 10-15 commands which is direct like talking to a real person and it will execute the commands. This is an awesome feature.

9. 8 Years and 100,000 miles (160,000 kms) warranty on the battery. Well, going by my car shopping experiences, I doubt if I will see the light at end of 100K miles tunnel.

10. Another biggest annoying factor for me apart from no Burmeister audio is there are no music control features on the steering wheel housing. I listen to a lot of music in the car and I'm struggling to find how to forward, reverse, play or stop music without having to dig into the screens. Maybe, there is an easier way and, I just haven't found it yet.

11. There is no FRUNK. This is a disappointment as that space in EV's is a useful one but, not in the Mercedes Benz.

Congrats on the car Avi. Nice choice. The Model 3 resale value must have hurt. Don't intend to rub salt on your wounds but came across an interesting chart tracking Tesla model 3 prices:




I'm guessing that yours was a 2023 model so the entry point would have been like $65k + taxes. I think a 50% drop is not so abnormal for used EVs. Used Teslas had eroded by 7.5% this year while other brands only dropped 2.5% as per Cox automotive's analysis that tracks industry trends.

While the Merc is a nice car, I doubt whether you'll be able to hold on to the loss of equity by jumping from one EV to another "new" EV.

I'm sure Merc gave you one hell of an offer on the EQB. It would have been lucrative enough to make that switch.

But, you are spot on, I bought it when the price was the highest, as mentioned in my other posts, I paid $75K off the door for the Tesla. I did lose a lot of money on it. Hence, this decision.

On the other hand with the BMW, I have a feel good factor- I can make at least 10 grand whenever I decide to sell which btw is not gonna happen anytime soon. So, there is some respite. Whew!

Hopefully, I will continue with this combo of gas and ev car. This car is a stop gap till I’m out of the red. I will then replace the Mercedes with another fast EV. I have a couple of years of exploration to do so let’s see what comes my way.

Nobody buys a new car to save money. But again, money comes and goes so the main thing is to enjoy some scenic drives in a nice new Merc.

I am surprised that a 77.5 kWh battery only yields 350km or range though. Maybe the lower speeds in India or maybe it's the AWD factor because many EVs here have lower capacity batteries but still manage more range (e.g. Ioniq 5).

Except the range, its quite the nice package overall. Had the chance to drive the EQB300 and 350 here in India and its very sorted to say the least.

The electric Mercedes and ICE BMW make for a perfect garage.

I know the Mercedes purchase just happened out of the blue, but did you consider any other car when you decided to sell the Tesla?
