The new all-electric Volvo ES90 sedan will make its global debut on 5th March 2025.

The ES90 is the first Volvo car to be equipped with a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration, making it the most powerful car in terms of core computing capacity.

The new teasers show the 3-box design silhouette and you can see additional LEDs on the sides of the rear windshield. The front is expected to get Thor Hammer LED headlamps like the EX90.

The ES90 is built on Volvo'sSPA2 architecture and is the second car based on the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack after the EX90. The Superset tech stack consists of one single set of hardware and software modules and systems that will underpin all upcoming electric cars. This way performance can be boosted in every electric car in the model lineup simultaneously, so that ES90 customers benefit from EX90 software upgrades and vice versa.





Safety has always been a Volvo USP and the ES90 is no different. It features an advanced array of sensors, which includes one Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), five radars, eight cameras and twelve ultrasonic sensors, as well as an advanced driver understanding system inside the car. Volvo calls it Safe Space Technology.

Alongside the ES90, Volvo is developing a refreshed version of the ICE-powered S90 sedan.

Volvo ES90 electric sedan leaked, promises 435-mile range.

- The ES90 will be joined by a facelifted version of the ICE-powered S90 sedan.

Besides offering an estimated WLTP range of over 700 km (435 miles), the battery pack of the ES90 will be compatible with 350 kW charging and feature new battery management software. As a result, it will be able to gain 300 km (186 miles) of range in just 10 minutes of charging, while a 10-80% charge will be completed in 20 minutes.

In terms of sustainability, the ES90 will use recycled and natural materials in its production. Furthermore, the company will be transparent about the source of the rare metals used in the battery pack, and its carbon footprint.

The electric sedan is set to be the first Volvo to feature a dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin setup, giving it the highest core computing capacity in the brand’s lineup. This configuration will also be introduced in the EX90, with existing customers receiving a complimentary upgrade.

The system supports AI-based active safety features and sensors, contributing to Volvo’s “Safe Space Technology“. In terms of sensor hardware, the ES90 will be equipped with one LiDar, five radars, eight cameras, twelve ultrasonic sensors, and an “advanced driver understanding system inside the car”.

435 miles translates to a 440 kms real world range between 90% and 20% battery charge. Good enough for most uses but not quite for inter city travel without energy worries.

Versus the earlier S90 I hope Volvo design in -- (1) a longer leg room at the rear; (2) softer suspension (3) a reasonable sized dickey at the rear; (4) seat that is not as low as the old S90 which made ingress and egress difficult for stiff bodied oldies like me.

Officially unveiled, the ES90:

- From €69,995, 700 km of range

The ES90 comes in three motorizations. The entry-level model is the Single Motor, which delivers 245 kW (333 hp) and 480 Nm. This allows it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. The Twin Motor has 200 kW at the rear and 130 kW at the front, giving a system output of 330 kW (449 hp) and a torque of 670 Nm. The 0 – 110 km/h sprint takes 5.5 seconds. The topper is the Twin Motor Performance, with 280 kW at the rear and 220 kW at the front, together 500 kW (680 hp) and 870 Nm. This version reaches 100 km/h after 4.0 seconds. For all three, Volvo's company policy of 180 km/h is limited.

The rear-wheel drive ES90 has 92 kWh (88 net) under the floor. Charging is done at a maximum of 300 kW, which allows you to slurp in 275 new kilometers in 10 minutes and have a range of 650 km WLTP. Both Twin Motors have a battery pack of 106 kWh (102 net) and charge at a maximum of 350 kW, good for 300 km in 10 minutes. The WLTP cycle showed 700 km of range for both four-wheel drives.

The Core is the simplest. It costs €69,995 with the lightest engine and comes standard with four-zone climate control, electrically adjustable and heated front seats, ten speakers, panoramic roof, electrically operated tailgate, 20-inch wheels and LED matrix lighting. For €4,000 more you can get the Plus which, in addition to the above, has a head-up display, electric steering wheel adjustment, heated rear seats, adjustable seats and lumbar supports at the front and fourteen Bose speakers. Still €7,000 left? Then treat yourself to the Ultra: 360-degree camera, soft-close doors, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, a luxurious center armrest, electrically adjustable rear backrest, 21-inch wheels, air suspension, front massage function, HD-pixel headlights and an electronically dimmable panoramic roof. The Twin Motor is available from €78,995, in Plus or Ultra. The Performance costs at least €84,495, also as a Plus or Ultra.

With the ES90, Volvo mainly wants to compete with the BMW i5, the Mercedes-Benz EQE and the Audi A6 eTron. test drives in September and will be at dealerships in December. The Volvo ES90 will be built in Chengdu, China, from the third quarter.

Electric propulsion can level the playing field for Volvo in case of their premium offerings against their rivals, since so far they have been caught short in terms of their powertrains. They have nailed their design styles, both in and out, which has carved out a unique niche for them in the market.

Coming to the ES90, DAMN does it look GOOD! Specs seem on par with the rivals. Pricing it competitively can provide them the traction they need to make themselves visible in the their target populace.

The side profile looks quite similar to the Neue Klasse concept by BMW. Not a fan of the somewhat abrupt rear.

The Volvo ES90 is the successor of the S90 that has been in the market for 10 years.
It is fully electric and powered by three variations at launch with range up to 700 km WLTP. It has not only sedan but also hatchback and crossover vibes.
