Re: BYD Sealion 7 Review

Fail to understand how only in India the Sealion7 is priced higher than the Seal.

Guess this plays right into the hands of BMW iX1 LWB now (vs the Premium variant)?

Re: BYD Sealion 7 Review

Great pricing, I am impressed by the way BYD is playing right now.
This is the perfect penetrative strategy for them to eat up market share.

They have now 4 cars, all premium products, BYD is now definitely viewed as a premium brand (the SEAL sealed the deal for me to think of it as a carmaker rather than a chinese automaker)

Now, all they need is to introduce sub-20L models, and I am sure they will dominate the Indian EV space, I am yet to figure out the result for the Mahindra EVs, could be a good fight between the two.

They have probably learnt that the premium sub-50L variant is where they can squeeze a bit more; because the AWD variant is not as highly priced over the Seal counterpart.

I think they missed a trick or two. Should’ve brought down the AWD variant price further down toward the 50L mark — surely they’d have got enough and more BMW customers lured in. Time will tell.

Oh! This is really tempting at the price! I wonder if its worth going full EV at home with both electric cars.

Re: BYD Sealion 7 Review

The highlight for me is the 500+ bhp engine and 4.5 sec 100 kmph; it is not a sports car territory.

With cars like the Mahindra EV twins in the mainstream, MG's Sportscar, and the Seal & Sealion, we are seeing the re-emergence of performance car culture brought in by EVs. All these cars are 300+ Bhp. I hope sane driving prevails.

Re: BYD Sealion 7 Review

Car manufacturers should learn how to make interiors from BYD. Elements like the rotating touchscreen, metal power window buttons, that slim gear selector, unique door handles and that beautiful 4 spoke steering wheel just feel a class apart. This is a very solid offering from BYD IMO. It looks very fluidic, and is priced well.

Kudos to BYD for bringing revolutionary electric cars to India, since Tesla is anyway no where to be seen atleast for now. Looks like BYD is also listening to customers, as now they have provided a sun blind for the panoramic roof. I wish it was openable, but then from a safety standpoint this should be just as functional as a regular sunroof.

Also, I heard this car does not get 120kph speed warnings from Faisal Khan's video since it is a CBU. Do other CBU's also not get this speed alert system? Like, say the CBU's from VW such as the Tiguan Allspace or the Skoda Superb CBU.

Re: BYD Sealion 7 Review

BYD has got a solid product here. Car looks really good and with the performance and quality on offer, I will be tempted (in 2 years time) to increase my budget and pick this as my secondary car. But I am sure in 2 years time EV space will see much more developments and we will keep seeing better vehicles.

Re: BYD Sealion 7 Review

Between Sealion 7 and iX1 LWB, which one has a better rear seat? I found the backseat of iX1 uncomfortable even for a 5'10". Even though it has ample legroom, the back recline and thigh support are poor. Is Sealion more comfortable on the back, comparatively?

Here’s how the newly-launched BYD Sealion 7 stacks up against the Hyundai Ioniq 5, BMW iX1 LWB, Volvo EX40, C40 Recharge and Mercedes EQA on the price graph.

Re: BYD Sealion 7 Review

Range test done by Bjorn (the best EV reviewer on youtube) in thailand, test conditions very similar to a mild day in India.

Cruising range at 90 kmph is just under 450Kms for the AWD version. Gets worse at 120.

The WLTP range for the RWD is 482km and the AWD is 456km. So this is about expected. In real world condition expect around 420-430km from RWD and 400 from AWD.

I was expecting much better since the Seal does 570km WLTP range. Not sure why the Sea lion does almost 20% worse while looking very aerodynamic.

The main difference is aero at high speeds. The frontal area of the Sealion (the face that the air hits) is much bigger (wider and noticeably taller)

Other reasons
  • Bigger 20 inch Michelin Tyres (vs EcoContact on Seal)
  • Different motors and electrical architecture (even though this is "800V" class)
  • Higher weight

20 percent is a pretty decent tradeoff for these. The main issue (if you start comparing with Tesla) is that Seal itself isnt anywhere close to Model 3 in terms of efficiency, and this delta increases as you move to SUVs. 150 KW peak charging isn't anything great but should be enough use in India for now.

Bjorn will be testing the 92 KwH version next week in Norway, hopefully that will be more in depth and gives us more insights into the car

I believe you mean Model Y, not 3. And I agree. I’ve driven Model Y(base, RWD around 55kwh IIRC) for a few thousand kms and that one gave me around 143wh/km mostly with cruising at around 90/100kmph. For 82kwh battery the efficiency would be a bit worse around 150-160wh/km but still would result in 520-550km of range. That’s quite a bit better.

My short experience with BE6 was also pretty good. When I sat in it the range was showing 280 something km for 89% battery but after driving an hour in Bangalore traffic the range left shot up to ~500km with battery remaining around 80%.

There’s something inherently inefficient about the Sea lion. I don’t think it should do that much worse than Model Y or even the BE6 (Mahindra isn’t known for brilliant EV engineering).
