Volkswagen teases cheapest ID electric car: Launch in 2027

Volkswagen has released the first official teaser for its upcoming entry level EV, the ID.One. Slated to go on sale in 2027, it will be the car maker's cheapest electric car with prices starting at 20,000 Euros (approx Rs. 18 lakh).

VW CEO, Thomas Schafer described the ID.One as an “affordable, high-quality, profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe,” emphasizing the region’s reputation as the “Champions League of automobile manufacturing.”

He also added that the concept version of the car will debut in March this year.

While the official name hasn't been confirmed yet, it was previously called the ID.1, but the teaser image reveals that it could be named the ID.One. It is slated to sit below the production version of the ID2.all concept (could be called ID.Two) which goes on sale in 2026.

Coming to the teaser that reveals the front and lighting of the concept, you see headlights that get 3D LED graphics integrated with a black grille. An illuminated VW logo sits in the centre of the grille as well. Slim DRLs are seen on the front bumper. One can also spot flared wheel arches that suggest the car could get large alloy wheels.

The back of the infotainment screen can also be seen in the teaser.

The ID. One will be built on a shorter version of the MEB platform, shared with the slightly larger ID.2all. It could come with a small battery pack with a single electric motor.

The teaser also gives impressions that it could be a 5 door hatchback with high ground clearance, giving it a crossover stance.

By 2027! VW is pretty late to join the party of economical EVs in Europe, here are some cars that are already on road and cost around 20,000 Euros

- Fiat Panda electric
- Fiat 500e
- Dacia Spring (Kwid)
- Citroen eC3
- Renault 5
- Vauxhall Corsa electric
- Some Chinese brands

Interestingly, the Dacia Spring is one of the most popular cars, despite all the shortcomings in build quality, space, battery/charging specifications. It is one heck of a beater car for short city drives.
