re: Mahindra BE 6 Review

Kudos to Mahindra for delivering something out of the ordinary. We need more automobile companies to innovate as such.

I do partially agree to this. I have used voice commands extensively in my ecosport, Kia sonet and Seltos and 99% of times it did what it was asked to accurately. I used it for navigation, calling, sending/hearing received WhatsApp msgs, some random Google searches, setting climate control, playing audio tracks etc.

While the same functionality exists in my fronx too, the implementation needs to be improved vastly. Success ratio is just about 80% with Android auto and about 50% without it. Hence i agree partially.

Is it preferable to use the 7.2 kW charger for home use for prolonging the battery health over a 11kW charger? Or since its A/C charging this won't matter?

This might even be educational for every driver in the new age. Yes Physical AC buttons are no longer needed, YES.

Please add Voice control of AC settings in your review, this is a big educational shift to all of the drivers who will start using voice control for AC setting instead of getting distracted to use it on the touch screen.
Voice is a good addition but it can't completely replace the need for physical buttons, at least now. Advantage with the physical buttons is, it (or rather the users) makes use of our muscle memory. It requires least attention as your hand goes to the right place, operate the control with right twist/pressure to get the desired result. Voice can work well for simple commands but if you need to think about precise prompt and check if you got the result etc, is a additional cognitive load for most users. Then there is a issue of cultural adaptation in using voice commands and getting the voice command work with loud music.
In fact most car makers including VW are bringing back the buttons/knobs (they all have voice commands)

Don't worry mate, I am there too. 40+ and loving this car. I like the color Desert Myst. Will test drive when available and if favorable, then I will book. Otherwise, I guess Tata will reduce the price by then due to competition?

I also find both these cars really really offensive to look at - a personal taste, but still - offensive to look at. Some of the gimmicks are a plain invitation to morons being public nuisance, for example, the groove mode when external lights seem to sync with whatever music... Among all the Mahindra cars, XUV300, and XUV400 have been the only two that I find likable - I can accept XUV300 for how it looks, and I like XUV400 the way it looks.

I hope they significantly tone down a lot of the design elements.

Physical buttons and controls are things you control by muscle memory and work 100% of the times you use them. Not so with voice control. There is the other matter of trying to use voice controls in a car full of noisy kids or boisterous adults. The eyes belong on the roads, even though the cars boast of ADAS.

re: Mahindra BE 6 Review

Excellent specs at the price point offered. Totally smitten by it to the point I had considered booking right away when it opens. But when the feeling sunk in, ĺ got 2 concerns, 1 big and 2 minor.

1. Big concern - the extremely slanting rear windshield. It not only restricts visibility but also makes the car quirky, so much so that it's becoming a big turn off for me. I wish they had kept a normal looking rear portion.

2. Minor concern - Why on earth have they kept start/stop switch on the centre console, that too on the passenger side! It becomes easily accessible to toddlers and kids seated on the front passenger seat (with an elder). Kids of age 1 to 4 years have an extreme liking to press buttons of any sort - electric switches, lift buttons, calling bell, laptop key board etc. I know that it's a bad practice to allow kids to sit at front and without a child seat. But c'mon, practically that's what we do. While I don't justify the malpractice of allowing kids to sit at front, I also expect car makers to keep buttons away from passenger seat as much as possible. Like how Maruti cars have positioned the start/stop button. It's on the right side of driver, tucked behind the steering wheel. This is the ideal position. I think it's a design flaw in BE 6E.

Looks like an amazing effort from Mahindra and an even more amazing review from you guys.

It would be a shame if they did not plonk in a Diesel/Petrol engine in this, give it AWD or 4wheel drive, some automatics and start a new segment with it.

re: Mahindra BE 6 Review

Mahindra made 2 very similar looking cars just like dosas from a hot kitchen. They could have made one of them a normal and more digestible one.

A facelift can change the things. Just like how the first gen Nexon's front end transformed during the facelift, or how crera changed during the latest facelift.

We've heard about doctors' car, sports car etc. Hooligan cars. Is there any such term or car?

Lamborghini +Ferrari+ Porsche + Suv Coupe fed into Generative AI and the output is somewhat similar to this with Final C front and rear being provided.

I am 30 and liking this over XEV for following reasons -
  • 4.4 m vs 4.8 m. Both being a 5 seater car, I don't see the point going for such a large behemoth considering you pack average amount in your trunk.
  • Just bowled over by the BE6E styling. It's just perfect for me. XEV on the other hand seems a little too plump from rear.
  • Same goes for interior. Me being 5'9 and dad at 5'11 are tallest individuals in our house who would occupy front seats. Rear would be occupied by wife and mom who are just 5'0 and 4'11 and hence legroom isn't an issue.

re: Mahindra BE 6 Review

The person that decided placing every single function on the car in the touchscreen and making the aircon controls the most frustrating thing to use on the planet, deserves the worst I'd wish upon them. Why do manufacturers think it's cool to make these overly complex touchscreens and think people actually want to buy them? Are they idiots or just playing idiots? This truly is the last straw. Give us physical tactile controls for the necessary functions. We don't care how much it costs or how ugly it looks!

Even the steering wheel is an object of absolute misery for the driver. That horn placement and the overall design of the controls will cause dangerous levels of irritability and distraction during clutch moments. Imagine you want to make a small adjustment to the cruise control and end up honking, looking like an absolute fool for no reason and potentially distracting motorists and pedestrians alike, around you. I regret the fact that Mahindra got so much right, yet went so wrong in the most basic requirements.

I really pray to god that the software is simplified before deliveries begin and Mahindra re-designs the steering wheel control interfaces. Design for ergonomics affects the long term ownership satisfaction a great deal. This form of short-sighted design choicing is deplorable. There's a reason why people with Toyotas retain their cars for longer. They don't mess with the user interface comfort.

re: Mahindra BE 6 Review

Why are Born Electric platforms so wide? At > 1900mm, it is Tempo traveller category.
Is it because, they want to be future safe to avoid being called a narrow car 10 years down the line?
Or is it to compete with the larger car makers at an International stage?
Or, is it just like smart phones getting bigger and bigger to pack in larger batteries?
With such a high floor level, I am guessing that the battery pack is a generation or two old, for it needs the volume to provide such high mileage and power.

And for the Halo, hasn't anyone been in a tight parking spot, and not able to open the driver door, and gotten out on the passenger side? This makes it impossible even for an olympic gymnast.

But otherwise, Mind blowing car. Full marks to Mahindra for what they give at such a price point

A colleague of mine, after a month or so of his ownership of a new Kia Carens, told me that he finally managed to find the most useful button on the infotainment system; the one that switches it off. I have been in the hunt for this magic switch in my Nexon EV for the last 2 years and yet to taste success. I hope these vehicles come with at least this feature if not anything else.
