Upcoming Mercedes CLA EV creates new record ahead of global unveil; Travels 3,716.9 km in 24 hours

According to reports, the all-electric version of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA has created a new world record for travelling the most distance in 24 hours.

The upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA travelled 2,309.6 miles (3,716.94 km) in just 24 hours at Italy's Nardo test track, at an average speed of 96.2 mph (154.8 km/h). The electric CLA sedan beat the previous distance record by over 180 miles.

The close-to-production Mercedes-Benz CLA used for the test required forty 10-minute recharge spells to maximise efficiency. The CLA EV used in the record run came with a single rear-mounted electric motor, which Mercedes-Benz calls 'Electric Drive Unit 2.0'. Mercedes claims this uses the same tech as its EQXX Vision and delivers 268 BHP to the rear wheels via a 2-speed gearbox. The upcoming CLA EV also aims to have 466 miles (750 km) of range on the WLTP cycle.

The new Mercedes CLA is the first car to be based on the brand's 800-volt MMA platform, which allows for up to 320 kW DC fast charging capabilities. Mercedes claims the CLA can recuperate 249 miles of range in just 15 minutes of charging.

Mercedes will introduce the new-gen CLA next year. It will be sold alongside the conventional fuel-powered versions of the sedan.
