Telangana announces 100% exemption on road tax, registration fees for EVs

Telangana government on Sunday announced providing 100% exemption from road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles (EV) purchased and registered in the state for the initial period of two years up to December 31, 2026.

The government decided to provide 100 per cent exemption from road tax and registration fees for electric two-wheelers, four-wheelers, commercial passenger vehicles such as taxis, private cars, electric three-seater auto-rickshaws, electric light goods carriers including three-wheeled goods vehicles, electric tractors and electric buses, according to the GO.

This is a very good step by Telangana govt and will benefit many people especially private car buyers. For example, this exemption will save around Rs 2 lakhs for MG Windsor, minimum Rs 2.7 lakhs for Tata Currv EV, and Rs 3.7 lakhs for BYD Atto 3. Since there are no price limits for the exemption, the cars like Ioniq 5 will cost much lesser now.

Re: Telangana announces 100% exemption on road tax, registration fees for EVs

It’s a very good initiative.

Quite possible KIA and all have lobbied and succeeded with the TS Govt. Considering TS proximity to KA and the concentration of wealth in TS we will see lots and lots of high end TS EV’s plying on the roads in KA.

KA especially Blr, Mys, Mlr and all already have the willingness to adopt EV’s and there is very decent charging infrastructure around too. So if KA were to follow this lead, we could see lots more high end EV’s here too.

Just wondering whether this will, in three years time, have a good effect on the market for used Higher end EV’s.

Its all a question of the volumes and numbers of the new ones, which will trickle down over time into the used markets.

Re: Telangana announces 100% exemption on road tax, registration fees for EVs

What does it mean when it says the exemption is initially valid for 2 years. Life time exemption is only valid for state owned buses and buses being used by companies for non commercial purposes.

Does it mean that if the policy is allowed to lapse after 2 years, road tax/registration fee would have to be paid after 2 years?

Re: Telangana announces 100% exemption on road tax, registration fees for EVs

Could be that tax exemption is for vehicles purchased till December 31, 2026.

For EV purchases after December 31, 2026, taxes would have to be paid in full, I guess.
Not sure what sort of exemption is being offered for buses post December 31, 2026.

Does Telangana have lifetime tax (valid for 15 years, like in Karnataka) or do vehicle owners pay yearly taxes?

This is great news indeed. Had this been in place earlier this year, I might have picked up an EV! Good time for the car buyers thinking about the EVs!

Re: Telangana announces 100% exemption on road tax, registration fees for EVs

This was first introduced in 2021 during KCR's regime and was reverted back just before he stepped down as CM last year.

Anyway, I'm happy that tax exemption on EV is back in Telangana but bit disappointed that they aren't extending this to life.

Now, after seeing this, I'm tempted to get ourselves an EV replacing our City iDTEC next year as a second car and considering ZS EV as well as Nexon EV 45KW, which will be costing close to 18L OTR post tax exemption while latter will be costing 21L OTR (Excite Pro).

After having experienced the EVs like Tesla, Ioniq 5, EV6, Mustang Mach-E here in USA in recent times, I feel like getting one here in India.

Re: Telangana announces 100% exemption on road tax, registration fees for EVs

It's a great move . Because EVs are still a relatively new technology & come with their own challenges, government push is mandatory. At least until they go mainstream. Globally, EV sales haven't lived up to expectations (especially in 2024) & they need all the love they can get. Frankly, once most people test-drive an EV, they become converts. But it requires financial support from the governments, growing charging infrastructure from public & private players and a change in consumer mindset. Luckily, battery prices are falling and the driving range is continuously increasing.

It's a good market. I remember reading somewhere that ~10% of Mercedes-India sales are from Telangana.

Re: Telangana announces 100% exemption on road tax, registration fees for EVs

Quoting from this article https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/in...-12869084.html

Quote:
According to the government order, this exemption will be applicable to electric two-wheelers, four-wheelers, commercial passenger vehicles such as taxis, private cars, and three-wheeler autorickshaws, along with electric light goods carriers such as three-wheeled goods vehicles, electric tractors, and electric buses.

For buses owned by any industry exclusively for transporting employees (not for commercial purposes), if purchased and registered in Telangana, will be exempt from paying registration fees and road tax till December 31, 2026, irrespective of the number of vehicles it registers.

“The EV policy is being introduced with the aim of preventing Hyderabad from becoming a polluted city like Delhi,” Prabhakar was quoted by local media as saying.
From above, it's clear that the exemption has no limit on number of buses to be registered till the said period. However, it doesn't seem to be clear about any limit on number of 2W/4W etc. Hope this is unlimited too.

They are also talking about preventing Hyderabad from becoming a polluted city etc. Hopefully they don't introduce NCR like odd even rule and other stringent measures.

It's extremely unlikely that Karnataka will change its policy. In fact, they changed it a few months ago to introduce an upper threshold of INR 25L post which road/registration tax kicks in for EV's. The government is reeling under a deficit due to the various freebie schemes, so I don't see even a slim chance of any change in the government policy on this front.

Re: Telangana announces 100% exemption on road tax, registration fees for EVs

Air pollution is there in Hyderabad nowadays as winters are coming. It's not as severe as Delhi NCR but it's there.

However it still remain to be seen how much jump in EV registrations will happen once this comes into effect. In my opinion it should be huge since registration charges of petrol cars is very high in Telangana as well as fuel prices are among the highest in Telangana and AP.

Registration fees on EVs should be removed in all states IMHO. Although private vehicles are maintained so passenger vehicular emissions may not contribute to air pollution by much, but still it will help in bringing it down. Old commercial vehicles and diesel buses running in Hyderabad needs to be banned.

Yes, I am also waiting for the same.

But this sudden change impacts second hand EV market as they depreciate by 17% at least in Telangana.

Re: Telangana announces 100% exemption on road tax, registration fees for EVs

I rarely see many EVs on Hyderabad roads (especially on the ORR where I commute regularly). This move is going to really boost the EV sales. I had the opportunity to buy a new car in 2023 and bought an ICE vehicle because EVs were too expensive and there's too much tax on those expensive vehicles.

This exemption would have changed my decision last year!

If we get more than 400km of real world range, it is very much feasible to buy an EV as the only vehicle in the household. But currently that is still distant dream for many. Petrol vehicles still make more financial sense. But this exemption is definitely going to increase the sales of Curvv EV, MG ZS EV and other large battery option EVs.
