New-gen Nissan Leaf EV spied for the first time; Features a high-riding fastback styling

The Nissan Leaf is one of the most popular EVs in the global market, having been on sale for quite a while. Now, Nissan is finally said to be working on its next-generation iteration.

Ahead of its global unveiling, the first set of images capturing the upcoming EV undergoing testing has been doing the rounds. As seen from these spy images, the next-gen Nissan Leaf can be seen featuring a high-riding fastback design instead of the outgoing car's hatchback body style. The images showcase the car completely camouflaged, although the large wheels and the distinctive silhouette can be seen.

Reports mention that the new-gen Nissan Leaf will borrow direct inspiration from the brand's Chill-Out Concept from 2021. In terms of design, the new-gen Leaf could come with LED lighting all around with an LED light bar at the front and a more three-dimensional lighting element at the rear. The car could get flush-fitting door handles with the rear door handles being positioned on the C-pillar. Other details include bi-colour bodywork, which includes a contrasting coloured roof and pillars.

Inside, the new-gen Leaf is expected to share a lot of elements with the Ariya. This includes the dual-screen layout and the clever integration of its physical controls.

The new-gen Nissan Leaf could be based on the AmpR platform, co-developed with Renault. Specifications of the new Leaf, though, are yet to be confirmed, although reports do suggest it could borrow its battery and electric motors from Renault's Megane E-Tech.

Even in their global portfolio Nissan usually misses the bus when it comes to timely updates of their successful products. Leaf is one of the earliest EVs that tasted success. Happy to see Nissan bringing the latest generation to stay competitive. Hope they put some thought about their Indian line-up and bring the upcoming products with multiple engine & transmission options.

Let’s hope they finally give it liquid cooled battery this time.

Leaf while spearheaded EV adoption on lower budget than Model S back in the day, also gave rise to slew of myths such as high battery degradation within few years and limited performance in temperature extremes

Hope they’ve learnt their lesson in its third iteration.
