Tesla axes its $25,000-priced Model 2 EV plans as Elon Musk calls it "pointless"

According to reports, Tesla has axed its highly anticipated Model 2 EV from its future plans.

The Tesla Model 2 was said to be in the works for a while now, meant to be the brand's entry-level offering with a price tag under $25,000. Instead, company CEO Elon Musk stated that Tesla will shift focus from the Model 2 to autonomous vehicles and the recently unveiled Cybercab.

Elon Musk even called the Tesla Model 2 EV "pointless." He stated, "I think we’ve made it very clear that the future is autonomous. I think having a regular 25k [dollar] model is pointless. It would be silly. It would be completely at odds with what we believe."

Tesla had earlier even released a teaser image of the Model 2. The Robotaxi will now be Tesla's most affordable vehicle, and as per Elon Musk, the Cybercab, once on sale, will have a price tag of around $30,000.

This guy has a foot in mouth syndrome. Few months back when Reuters gave the news that Tesla has scrapped the idea of producing the inexpensive EVs (Read 25k$).

He went gaga on his own platform X and tweeted "Reuters is lying (again)"

Seems changing goal posts as per his convenience is his USP, lets have a smoke mirror for flying cars now.

And now this, Elon Musk admits Tesla's existing ‘self-driving’ cars may never actually drive by themselves. Yeah on older Tesla vehicles, but first it was for all tesla cars.

It makes sense as the prices of the current models have been falling and is likely to hit the $25K price tag they were advertising for a Model 2. Why waste creating a new one when they will have the current models at the same price point.

I guess he thinks that Tesla cannot compete with the Chinese manufacturers on features/specs at that price point.

Perhaps not if every Tesla has to come with hardware for full self driving built in. Competing on price alone is a race to bottom which can already be seen in the mobile world. Android has literally hundred's of OEM's and thousands of models and yet Apple takes away a lion's share of the profits of the whole industry selling a fraction of devices. Its more than 70% infact.

Given the socio-economic conditions, two wars going on with no end in sight, the disruption that AI is expected to cause in the near future, I think Tesla is pivoting their business model. They will still be moving forward with their radical unboxed manufacturing technique but i think with the current models for now. Tesla also announced in their recent earnings call that their cost of goods sold per vehicle has dropped to its lowest-ever. This is not happening in vacuum without them pushing for it.

Fully autonomous self driving is not guaranteed to be approved in near term. If trump wins the presidency, Elon and Tesla have the best opportunity to get regulations passed in their favor based on how much support Elon has been giving Trump during the campaign. But if Kamala Harris wins, there is a very very high probability that another 4 years will go by with no government approval for full self driving being given. The Harris government will probably bury Tesla in bureaucratic red tape.

And if full self driving or autonomous driving isn't given regulatory approvals, then Tesla's cybercab/robotaxi concept will not work.

Tesla plans Model Y costing at least 20% less to defend China share.

- Low-cost version to be built in Shanghai from 2026
- Shanghai output mainly for China market
- Version will also be built in Europe, North America
- The model under a project codenamed "E41" will build it using existing production lines
- Mass production will begin at its biggest factory by output in 2026

Global production of the lower-cost Model Y, internally codenamed E41, is expected to begin in the United States, the sources said. That would occur at least a few months later than outlined in Tesla's public plan, they added, offering a range of revised targets from the third quarter to early next year.
