New-generation MG ZS EV unveiled in China, ahead of international launch

MG Motor has unveiled the new-generation iteration of its ZS EV SUV. The all-electric SUV was unveiled in China as the "MG ES5" and is expected to arrive in international markets very soon.

Reports state that the new-generation MG ZS EV could get a different name once launched in the UK. However, MG has yet to decide on a new name for the all-electric SUV. In addition to this, reports also state that the design could differ slightly from the Chinese-spec, although it will carry forward the family resemblance with other MG EVs - especially the MG4 SUV on which the electric SUV is based.

The new-gen MG ZS EV has a clean design with sleek LED DRLs with the main headlights positioned below, a large central air intake at the bottom of the front bumper, roof rails, conventional door handles, black cladding all around, large alloy wheels, and a full-width light bar with Y-shaped tail lights at the rear. The new ZS EV gets MG's large octagon chrome badge on the nose. Inside, the minimalist design continues with a large central touchscreen and a small digital instrument cluster.

The new MG ZS EV is said to be longer, wider, and lower than the outgoing model. The new-gen ZS EV measures 4,476 mm in length and has a wheelbase of 2,730 mm - 70 mm longer than the previous-gen SUV.

While the technical specifications of the new-gen ZS EV are yet to be officially announced, reports do suggest that the base model could get a 51 kWh battery offering 322 km of range. The higher-spec version could get a larger 77 kWh battery pack offering around 483 km on a single charge. The Chinese-spec MG ES5 is rear-wheel-drive, producing between 168 BHP and 242 BHP, depending on the variant.

Once it arrives in the international market, the new-gen MG ZS EV will be a direct rival to the Skoda Elroq and the Hyundai Kona Electric.

I am sure this will not come to India before 2026. MG India should launch Windsor with 50kwh battery pack as well and price it around 19-20L (without ADAS).

The Windsor line up alone can become the top seller in EV segment in India catering alternative to Punch, Curvv, EvX, Creta EV, XUV400, 3XO EV.

Re: New-generation MG ZS EV unveiled in China, ahead of international launch

I have seen people suggesting better shape for ZS/Astor to make it look more like an SUV. Even I was under a similar impression when I looked at ZS EV standing alone in parking lot. ZS EV looked more of hatchback on stilts and not SUV. My perspective changed when I saw ZS EV parked next to previous gen Creta and then I realized that ZS EV is similar in size to Creta and the current front fascia and body silhouette mask the size and make the ZS EV smaller in size.

The exterior of this new ZS EV looks nice and classy from both the angles. I hope MG follows this design language with their upcoming EV models as well. The front grille does not look like Neo with sealed lips from Matrix. The front fascia gives SUV stance which is loved by general Indian population. Creta EV is not too far away. If MG delays launching this in India and Creta EV/Sierra EV come to India first, it will be difficult to sway people away from Creta EV/Sierra EV.

322km range for a 51 KWH battery sounds very less. This must be real world range.

Interesting if this is changing from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive. Could this be based on MG4 platform in that case?

Current Gen is based on multi-energy platform. If this is based on MG4 platform, it will be pure-EV skateboard - thus liberating much more interior space.

322km from 51 kWh pack is clearly real-world. Current Gen also goes 340 km real world in India with AC and all things. Could be the same pack from CATL even.

Yes this comes with rear wheel drive but unfortunately there is no frunk and the space utilization on the inside isn't as good as the Windsor EV. The rear seat width and leg room is lesser than the Windsor.

Some of technical improvements in the motor is 20% more copper winding in the stator slots. The motor now as a peak efficiency of 94%.

Re: New-generation MG ZS EV unveiled in China, ahead of international launch

“On October 24, SAIC announced that its MG ES5 all-electric SUV will start pre-sale on November 2. The dealers revealed that the price range is expected to be around 100,000 yuan (14,000 USD). The MG ES5 is positioned as a global model officially and will be exported to Europe for sales.”

https://carnewschina.com/2024/10/25/...ange-in-china/

So China pricing for the 50 kWh base variant, could be in line with the top spec 50 kWh Cloud/Windsor, which after heavy dealer discount is currently available for about 98k yuan. (less than INR 12 lakhs!)

The slightly bigger Baojun Yunhai and much bigger Wuling Starlight S are currently available for 120-130k yuan, with battery packs in the 56-69 kWh range.

As @DIY410 pointed out it’s an open question which of these cars MG-SAIC-Wuling brings to India.

Re: New-generation MG ZS EV unveiled in China, ahead of international launch

Both the Front and Back (lights) seem like Hyundai Kona and Venue-isq, with some XUV700 backlight touch.
Personally, very boring design.

If anything, I want to see more Windsor-like design creativeness, I still think that car has one of the best space utilization and center console. Just love that damn floating console with more space beneath for a Ladies Purse or ipad or so on.
I am keen to see if our Shih Tzu, who usually uses centre arm rest or parcel tray as his seat, would use the new den as his seat

Compared to Windsor's interiors, new ZS's seems way too boring to me.

All these SUVs are sadly cookie cutter designs, unlike the unique Windsor. But there’s a spot for the pooch in this car as well. See photo below. Also I do like the Yunhai’s exterior more than this car. Maybe they’ll bring that instead. Photos below.

The Yunhai will have enough of a difference compared to Windsor to justify a higher price. It's bigger in size and has a bigger battery than the ES5.

The bigger Wuling Starlight S and Baojun Yunhai comes in both Hybrid and EV. MG India may get the former to replace the Hector with it. Since the underlying platform for Baojun Yunhai and Wuling Starlight S being the same, it may help keep costs down.

But for whatever reason probably due to higher battery energy density being expensive, the smaller Yunhai gets a higher kWh battery compared to the bigger Starlight S.

In terms of SAIC brands positioning in China. Wuling sits at the bottom, Baojun in the middle and MG being the premium brand.
