Kia opens its first EV-only plant in South Korea to build its entry-level EVs

Kia recently held the opening ceremony of its first EV-only manufacturing facility in Autoland Gwangmyeong, South Korea.

The new EV-only plant, called "EVO" will have an annual production capacity of 150,000 units. The brand's low-cost EVs, EV3 and EV4 will be the first models to be mass-produced in the new facility. The new EVO plant is also the Hyundai Motor Group's first EV-only facility.

Choi Joon-young, CEO, Kia, stated, "The completion of the Kia Gwangmyeong EVO Plant marks the first step for Kia to become a leading electric vehicle brand." In addition, a Kia official also stated, "EV3 and EV4 will play a very important role in popularizing electric vehicles. We will show you a new history of electric vehicles at the Gwangmyeong EVO Plant."

While production of the EV3 has already begun, Kia will begin manufacturing the EV4 electric sedan in the first half of 2025. The EV3 and EV4 will be Kia's third & fourth pure-EV offerings, respectively - following the EV6 and EV9. The South Korean carmaker describes the EV4 as an "entirely new type of EV sedan."

The EVO plant from Kia will be used as a key production base for the brand's future EVs.

Kia recently also announced that it is partnering with Hyundai to develop LFP batteries which will help bring down the costs of its EVs.
