Finding a charger for your road-trip? Check out what BHPians used on the same route

"Range anxiety", "Where will I charge my car on a trip?", "Is the charger reliable?", "What if the one I planned is not working?", "Will I get good food at my charging stop?" are the questions you will hear from an new EV owner or prospective EV owner. So I thought all EV BHPians can make repository of chargers on frequented routes which can alleviate range and charging anxiety.

Finding a charger for your road-trip? Check out what BHPians used on the same route-image_2566ef52c3.jpg

For example, I frequently go from Faridabad to Chandigarh or Faridabad to Sirsa. I know places which have reliable charger and have good eating places and washrooms.

I will recommend using a Template -

Starting City -
End City -
Vehicle -
Battery Capacity -
Range on Highway -
Charger Details
Charging Point Provider (CPO) -
Charger Capacity -
Number of Guns -
Charger Location -
Eatery options -
Alternate Charger Details
Charging Point Provider (CPO) -
Charger Capacity -
Number of Guns -
Charger Location -
Eatery options -
Public Charging options in Destination city -
If there is no public charger, Hotel which allows EV charging at destination -
Remarks -

Answering some of the questions I think may arise:
1. What if a new charger gets added or existing charger gets removed on a route?
I know the repository is not fool proof as chargers keep on getting added or removed on the routes. But people can keep on adding route updates if they see a better charging option or they see a charger listed is not working as reliably
2. All EVs will not need to use the same charger?
Agreed. That is why I have mentioned the Car and its highway range in the template
3. We already have a thread for chargers?
Yes, we have thread for sharing our charger experiences (BHPians experience on EV Charging Stations across India (especially non-metros)) but this thread is more about charger guide for EV users on frequented routes across India.
4. We already have Plugshare and other apps for route planning?
Yes, but this thread will confirm the trustworthiness of charger, the quality of eating joints at this charger.

Some General Info -
1. Plugshare is community based app where charger locations are added and reviewed by EV owners. The location of charger may be a bit wrong sometimes as it is user updated. It is better to use charging point operators app to find the exact location.
2. Tata IRA.EV, eHUb by MG and Statiq are charging aggregator apps which show availability status of multiple chargers in one app. Statiq allows payment for all chargers listed on their app.
3. Trip planning can be done via any of the above mentioned apps

re: Finding a charger for your road-trip? Check out what BHPians used on the same route

Now, in the spirit of this thread. I have an EV and my main drives are Bangalore - Ooty, Bangalore -Coorg, Bangalore - Madras and Bangalore - Coimbatore.

Ive only driven mine to Ooty and back so far and here is my small contribution.

1. Mysore Swad Restaurant at the end of the Expressway has a JioBP charger which has not been working since it was installed.
2. For people on this route the only viable option is the Shell recharge on the Mysore Nanjangud stretch. It would be absolutely prudent to top up the charge here because of the ‘juice drinking’ climb up ahead when ascending the hills by whichever route.
Next to this charger is a small restaurant called Ruchi Mane which offers reasonable food.
3. Ooty offers a first class Tata Power charger at Taj Savoy and a Zeon charger at Monarch Hotel. Im not sure of other chargers there.

But again I say, this thread is going to become very cumbersome to maintain and therefore will tend to fall into disuse.

Re: Finding a charger for your road-trip? Check out what BHPians used on the same route

I was quite disheartened that none of the EV owners wanted to share their frequented routes in a set format.

Anyway, I will add a more route which I have travelled. Delhi - Jaipur and Delhi - Ranthambore are similar so I will cover those this time

Faridabad (NCR) - Jaipur (Delhi Mumbai Expressway)- Ranthambore (Delhi Mumbai Expressway)

Starting City- Faridabad
End City- Jaipur.
Vehicle -Nexon EV Max
Battery Capacity- 40 KWh
Range on Highway - 220 kms (driving between 90-100 kmph)
Charger Details-Charging Point Provider (CPO) [ Volttic
Charger Capacity - 60 KW
Number of Guns - 2
Charger Location - Volttic Jodhpura Rest Area, - Location Link
Eatery options - Dhabas / Bansooriwala's and Haldiram on other side of expressway (Accessible via underpass)
Alternate Charger Details-Charging Point Provider (CPO)[/b] - IOCL
Charger Capacity - 60 KW
Number of Guns - 2
Charger Location - IOCL Charger, Dhigariya,Tappa - Location Link
Eatery options - Bikanerwala, Food Street food court and Starbuck's and McDonald's on the other side of the expressway (Accessible via underpass)[/indent]Public Charging options in Destination city - Yes, there are Tatapower, Statiq, Xobolt DC chargers

Remarks
1. There are fewer chargers on the Delhi Mumbai Expressway. There are a lot of chargers at the Dausa exit but you will have to drive slowly on the expressway to access them.

2. Delhi - Jaipur Old Highway - NH 48 is peppered with chargers. You will find one at every 30 - 40 kms. There are chargers from 60 to 160 KW available on this highway. I have not travelled on it to know which ones are more reliable. Also, the travel time on this route is more due to the ongoing upgrade of the highway

You could relax the formatting. Plugshare covers bulk of the technical details.
  • What would be useful to know is the reliability and availability of guns?
  • On a given major route, which charging points provide better success rate

I would see value from this thread in terms of insights, than the technical details.

Quote:
There are less chargers on Delhi Mumbai Expressway and most of them are operated by IOCL
I've been seeing some upcoming charging points in IOCL on the Madras-Trichy route too. And these are privately owned IOCLs, not COCO or Swagat outlets.

Re: Finding a charger for your road-trip? Check out what BHPians used on the same route

I frequently drive from Bangalore to Coimbatore and Chennai, the charging infra has seen a ~5x growth in roughly 1.5 years since I have purchased the car. I am discounting BPCL and other government chargers because I don't consider them reliable enough to waste my time and money on them.

I am going to list out the chargers that I keep in my mind while doing this trip. I use different chargers depending on how fast I want to reach, what kind of food I want and whether I feel like taking a break. So will modify the template slightly and reduce some redundant info.

Vehicle - MG ZS EV
Battery Capacity - 50 KWh
Range on Highway - 300 kms (driving between 90-100 kmph)

1. Bangalore - Coimbatore (NH44)

Charger Details
Charging Point Provider (CPO) - Zeon
Charger Capacity - 50 kW & 24 kW
Number of Guns - 2
Charger Location - Hotel Surya Complex, - Location Link
Amenities - This is one of the best highway rest stops that I have been to in India, It has a lounge to take a nap, children's play area, restrooms for guests as well as a full fledged hotel. I recommend this as stop for even ICE owners, never knew about this place in a decade of driving between these two cities.

Restaurants: Plenty of options, all highly rated: Saravana Bhavan, McDonalds, KFC, Burger King and Baskin Robbins

It's only around 70 KMs from Bangalore and I reach this place with 75%+ in SoC so it's not an optimal stop but if we are hungry, we simply plugin to the 24 kW charger and have our meal. The car is usually at 100% much before we are done with our meal.

Finding a charger for your road-trip? Check out what BHPians used on the same route-img_20230124_123343-1.jpg

2. Bangalore - Coimbatore (NH44)

Charger Details
Charging Point Provider (CPO) - Zeon
Charger Capacity - 50 kW
Number of Guns - 1
Charger Location - Aasai Aasai Anandha Bhavan, Omalur - Location Link
Amenities - Good restaurant and clean restrooms. This place also has a bus charging facility.

It's around 200 KMs from Bangalore and I reach this place with 40% in SoC. We usually take 35-40 mins to complete our meal and the car is at 90%+ which is generally enough to reach Coimbatore without further stops.

3. Bangalore - Coimbatore (NH44)

Charger Details
Charging Point Provider (CPO) - Tata Power
Charger Capacity - 25 kW
Number of Guns - 1
Charger Location - True Sai Motors, Salem - Location Link
Amenities - Tata Motors dealership located next to Hotel Grand Estancia

Now this is a slow 25 kW charger which is very rarely used by folks but it's something I have used multiple times and that is because of the presence of Hotel Grand Estancia next door which offers great hygienic food, super clean restrooms. I use this only on relaxed drives where we are in no rush. Charger also supports booking so there is no worries about arriving to a blocked charger. We only charge till we are having our meal which usually takes 45 minutes and we leave even if we don't have sufficient charge to make it to Coimbatore because there are plenty of chargers on the way to do a quick 10 minute top up. Also best to use the Tata Power RFID to start charging on this one.

4. Bangalore - Coimbatore (NH44)

Charger Details
Charging Point Provider (CPO) - Zeon
Charger Capacity - 50 kW & 60 kW
Number of Guns - 3
Charger Location - Saravana Bhavan, Sankari - Location Link
Amenities - Good restaurant + hotel for lodging.

This is a default spot to charge for many EVs traveling on this route. With 3 guns, the probability of being stuck waiting for others to finish charging is low.

5. Bangalore - Coimbatore (NH44)

Charger Details
Charging Point Provider (CPO) - Zeon
Charger Capacity - 120 kW & 60 kW
Number of Guns - 4
Charger Location - Texvalley Mall - Location Link
Amenities - Pretty cool charging setup with McDonald's nearby

If I need a 10 minute top up I either stop here or at Jio-BP.

There are plenty of other options on this route as well with significant number of chargers near Avinashi if you are running low on charge.

In my opinion, this is one of the best highways in the country to drive an EV on.

This is easily doable in Curvv without charging. You can easily charge in the destination city. Yamuna expressway doesn't have any chargers. UP govt has floated tenders for implementation

Quote:

The route is old Delhi Agra highway. It is peppered with chargers. Glida and Statiq have 60 KW multi gun chargers. There are Tata power chargers are also on this highway but most of them are 30 KW.

Quote:

Agra Lucknow expressway has only one charger and Jio BP petrol pump. The charger is not reliable due to power issues. So there are two options either drive till 80 kmph and charge in Lucknow or use old highway route.

Re: Finding a charger for your road-trip? Check out what BHPians used on the same route

@ferrarirules

I was talking of Nexon 45 and similar Curvv

Does it mean if one takes the old Agra - Kanpur route one can expect Chargers

If one has to drive at 80 it is better to take that road as it has many cities plus regen braking will give us more range.

Does it mean Firozabad , Etawah , Shikohabad, Jaswant nagar etc have chargers

I know the Agra Faridabad route has them

Thank you for the information.

Hi, your detailed information is very helpful. May I request you to add charging cost for the specific chargers you used. For example you start charging say at 30% & you charged till 90%, how much you paid and what is the standard calculations we should do to get an idea of public charging cost.

.
Yes alot of EV group members use the old Agra kanpur highway to travel to Lucknow. It has better charging options. I haven't travelled so cannot say the exact ones

Also I expect Cruvv and Nexon 45 to run 300 kms on highway with 80-90 kmph.

The public charging cost, I didn't mention intentionaly as it keeps on changing. Providers like Glida, Jio BP statiq are near about 18-19+gst per kwh. Govt providers like BPCL and IOCL have recently reduced prices to 14+ gst or 19+ gst per kwh. Tata is the costliest at 21+gst per kwh.

Thanks ferrarirules. What calculation a person do to get an idea how much one has to pay for per 1% or 10% charging in a public charger. Hope I am not asking too much, but not all are good in calculation . In case it is possible to share the calculation in the simplest way for per % or per 10% or so.

There is no easy way of calculating per % price as the size of battery varies for each car.

Example - For my car 10% is 4 KWH which will be around Rs. 80-90 on statiq, glida and Jio bp. But this price will vary for Cruvv or Tiago or Punch or Windsor or ZS EV or Atto3
