Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Many congratulations to all the new owners and wishing all of you lots of happy and safe miles!

Can any of the new owners please confirm what are the charges to be paid for extended warranty and also if any additional charges are required to be paid for lifetime warranty on the battery (as was initially suggested).

Will also be helpful if anybody can update on how the voice control works? There are 10 commands which work without using the wake word (pic attached + "make a call"). I had tried one or two of these during test drive. But wanted to know how does this feature work in real life, as also the commands requiring wake word.

Thanks in advance!

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Took delivery of T.Green Windsor Essence on 06 Nov 2024, after paying one full EMI even before taking delivery

Dealership experience was mixed, due to so many failed promises on delivery date. Dealer rep said there are no more T. Green vehicles allotted to them for the next 2 months due to high demand. Only black and white will be delivered for next 2 months. All accessories are costlier at the dealer than what was mentioned in the accessories brochure, and most of them are unavailable. Still waiting to get the Screen guard and Door edge protector (fully paid for). Wanted to go with MG Dashcam which is supposed to be common for all their vehicle models, and even that was not available. Got insurance on my own, despite dealer opposition. They mentioned handling charges 10k in the original price list, I told them its illegal since Supreme court observations and TG Government order in 2016 on the matter. They promptly updated their price list and put the same 10k under the head Teflon coating which unsurprisingly became mandatory at the time of delivery. Delivery was smooth and organized well.

Vehicle is only 5 days old so still learning lot of things. Things like AutoHold and 360 Degree camera are quite useful. Can clearly see both the tires on camera while parking next to drains or steep edges. The drive mode setting resets to Normal and Heavy Regen every time the car is switched ON, which is annoying. The door grab handles are positioned quite high up towards the glass, so its little inconvenient while opening and closing.

Extrapolated range on Normal mode in city driving, with AC running, is around 230 to 240 kms, while ECO mode is returning close to 300 to 310 kms in city with top speed under 60 kmph and light footed driving in both scenarios. I found the ride to be slightly more comfortable in ECO mode due to reduced acceleration and consequent less head movement while being seated inside. The difference can be felt in stop and go conditions in city traffic. The steering is too light for my liking, but will get used to it.

7.4 kW Charger was installed 2 days later and works fine. But surprisingly no option on the MG iSmart app to limit the percentage up to which we can charge. Request other owners to let me know if there is a way around or I am missing something.

Hi, Ashwathama.

For your kind information, Craw or creep functionality will not work if Auto Hold is active. But once you start rolling, the car will be able to be driven in creep/crawl functionality until braked and stopped next. Creep functionality may not even work when pre-requisites are not matched, e.g., Driver door ajar, Driver Seat Belt not fastened etc.

I hope this was helpful for you.

Regards.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

To all owners of Windsor EV and other EV four wheelers. I have some long list of questions related to battery health and cleaning. So here it goes.

1. What is the best way to charge the LFP battery in the Windsor? Should it be charged to 100% each time, or should it be charged to 80% to increase battery health like we do in cellphones, which contain Li-ion batteries?

2. How much should we drain the battery? Should the battery be drained to 0 every time and then charged to 100% or 80% or should one plug the charger when battery drops around 20% and then charge it to 80% or 100%.

3. Does the MG app or car have a feature of pausing the charging at say 80% or any desired percentage?

4. Do LFP batteries require monthly or weekly calibration? What I mean by that is, in laptops and phones, if you regularly charge from 20%-80%, it is advised that once a month, you calibrate your battery by depleting your entire battery, then charge it back to 100% - hold the charge at 100% for 1 hour by keeping it plugged in and then drain it back to desired percentage or value say 80%. This simply increases battery longetivity. Sounds like a headache but has done wonders for my laptop.

5. Is there a feature where you can drain the battery to 0% via the app or in car menu? Also, is there an option like battery maintenance or something which does this automatically?

6. I have heard that one should not always use the 50KW DC fast charger to always charge the vehicle but what about 7.4KW charger VS the 3.3KW charger? Is it okay to always use the 7.4KW charger or should one use the slow 3.3KW once in a while to maintain battery health?

7. How much does the battery deplete if I leave the vehicle parked in the garage for a day or two? Has anyone observed this? Eg: My Ather 450X depletes around 3-4% every 24hours just like a cellphone if left unused.

8. If one is going to leave the car unused for a couple of weeks. What is the best percentage to store it at? 50-60% or 100%. Usually, device manufacturers recommend you charge the device till 50-60% if you are not using it for a prolonged time.

9. Slightly unrelated but in Windsor there are modes like Eco+, Eco, Normal and Sport and it is recommended that to get max range you should drive the car in ECO+ which also limits the speed to 85kmph. Now my Ather 450X also has similar modes but interestingly, on their forum, someone had posted that if the vehicle is in eco mode and you drive the vehicle close to its speed limit, it puts more strain on the battery.

So, in short, according to that finding, if I drive the Windsor at 80kmph in ECO+ where the limit is 85kmph, it will put more strain on the battery. Rather it should be driven at 80kmph in some other mode where the battery is unlocked and max speed limit is 155kmph in order to reduce battery strain; thus giving you more range. Has anyone tried this? I tried this finding on my 450X, and it was actually true. I got better range in Warp mode over Eco mode.

And lastly, are there any other tips to maintain or improve battery health?

-- Now moving on to some cleaning questions :

10. Can a pressure washer be directed on the underside of the car on a daily or weekly basis? Will this harm the battery in any way?

11. What is the best way to wash the Windsor EV to maintain the paint? Is using a pressure washer daily suitable?

12. How often should one use a car shampoo?

13. The ORVM, windows and door handles are electrically operated. Will directing a pressure washer on them, in the long run, make it dysfunctional? Also can we direct the pressure washer directly on the rear view mirrors? because many a times sand gets stuck in the gaps where the mirror moves.

14. I hear many people use some high gsm cloths for wiping their car to protect the paint. Does this work?

Lastly, any other cleaning tips and tricks I should know of?

Thanks to everyone who took out their valuable time to just read this really long post of mine and a special thanks to those who made an effort to reply to this post Hope this helps others who have similar questions

  • LFP batteries have many more charge cycles than NMC batteries. LFP batteries have minimum 1500 charge cycles in them. This means if your car runs 250 km per charge cycle, your car has a battery life of around 3,75,000 kms. Hence there is lesser worry of charging LFP battery to 100% every time. LFP batteries are charged to 100% to help with cell calibration and helping the BMS with knowing the 100%.
  • You should never drain your battery to 0%. Ideal percentage to charge the battery from is around 20%. Until or unless you are on a trip and you have to go below 20% to reach a charger.
  • Laptop or Phone batteries are lithium polymer batteries which are not at all same as car batteries.
  • There is no need to do anything special for battery maintenance.
  • It is best to charge the car using 7.4 KW or 3.3 KW AC charger. Slower the charger is better for an electric car. Companies like Tata recommend 1 AC charge after 4 DC charges.

  • My Nexon EV doesn't have any battery depletion while standing unused. I have left it unused for 10 days at stretch as well. But then this depends on vehicle to vehicle on how the electricals are implemented
  • It is ideal to store the car at 50-60% charge for longer periods and follow the owners manual for long term storage instructions.
  • Speed of car has a lesser strain on battery than the acceleration of the car. Reason - Battery strain is directly proportional to the power you draw from it which is Volts x Amperes. As you accelerate hard the volts and ampere drawn from the battery increase. When you are driving at constant speed, the volt and ampere drawn is near constant irrespective of the drive mode.
  • My car "Nexon EV Max" has run 38,600 kms in last 1.5 years. My battery SoH is 99%. I charge my car to 100% at every charge cycle until or unless I am on a road trip.

Finally got the 16A plug point installed in my basement parking over the weekend. ~110m distance from my electricity meter. Used 6sqmm wire. Took ~ 10hr to charge from 40% to 100%.
Before this I had slow charged my car at workplace which took 11.5hrs for 27 to 100%.

I am willing to let go the 7.4kw charger I got with the car. If anyone has sold, please let me know how to go about it. Also if anybody needs pls contact me.

Congratulations ...!!!

Limiting percentage is not available for LFP batteries.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

According to the User Manual, one can schedule the start time of charge though. That way one may be able to manage the charging percentage.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

I need a help..
My dealer called yesterday and told me my car has arrived. SA told me that they’ve put it as the display car just now and it will be kept in display for 2 days. I went to see the car and started a short PDI. I noticed faint humming sound when AC fan was at level 1. First I thought it’s FM radio interference. But it was not going away and stopped when I switched off AC. SA also agreed on this and promised he will consult service guys. Just now he called and saying that they are unwilling to inspect a new car and this issue can be checked on first service. Even though it’s a small issue, I’m finding it difficult to accept this as a solution. What’s the forum’s take..

Don’t take it. Simply tell them to either cancel the booking or place an order for a fresh unit. Once you pay the full amount nobody will listen to your concerns whether it is one day after delivery or one year after delivery. Even if you say this issue persisted on the day of PDI its going to consume your time and energy. Also, the whole point of PDI is to check if there are any problems and accept or reject the vehicle accordingly. This is your hard earned money of years you are putting in, buy the best and drive the best.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Scam by shell or lack of knowledge??
Last Sunday I had to fast charge at Shell near Nayandahalli junction, Blore. Another Windsor was already on charge in one of the stations. But one Shell employee had convinced the other owner to charge from shell app saying it is not integrated with MG eHUB yet. The catch now is that there is no option of Windsor on Shell app and so they had selected Mg Zs EV and it was a paid charging session.
Even for me they advised the same. But once I saw there was no option of Windsor on shell app, I rejected and did through MG eHUB app.

It takes 1-2 min to initiate the charging session by which time the shell person came and discouraged us. He did something like trying to properly connect the CCS2 port. Then the session got terminated. He reiterated that Shell is not integrated with eHUB free charging facility so it failed.
I was not convinced. And once he left I again connected with eHUB app and gave few minutes to initiate charging and it worked!. 35% to 93% in 45min.

I made the other car also to end their session with Shell app and start again through eHUB app. They too could charge with eHUB free of charge. Their initial session with Shell cost them 200rs and then free from 47 to 100%.

Re: MG Windsor EV Review

Thank you for the quick response.
I can not cancel the booking now as I’ve made full payment when they informed that car has arrived ( of that half is loan which was disbursed one week back). It’s my bad, I should have done a PDI before transferring the final payment. But in my excitement, I did that payment. I have talked to SA and their team leader, and now they are saying they will get it checked at the service centre. Anyway I have asked them not to go forward with registration process until this clears up

In this thread only someone had posted emails of MG in case of any problems with showrooms. You can try those.

There is a study published recently about LFP battery longevity, which states that cycling the battery between 75 to 100% every time is worse than cycling it 0 to 100%. Higher average SoC means higher voltage in LFP batteries and that accelerates the capacity fade. Hence the better choice is to keep the average SoC lower. However, the Windsor manual suggests charging the battery to 100% every time the vehicle is charged.

I want to keep the cycle window between 40 to 80% and charge up to 100% once in two weeks as mandated in the manual for SoC calibration and cell balancing.

It's ok, drhk10. We mess up at times. Do you have a video of the sound going away when AC is switched off, preferably taken during the PDI?
If so, inform the dealer that you will not accept the car till the issue is resolved and be adamant on it.
If they push you to accept the car, write to the MG management with the video attached, letting them know that you cannot accept a known defective product.

Hopefully MG management respects your wishes and allocates a fresh car or extends warranty for the specific issue.
