Renault R17 is an electric restomod of a classic 1970s two-door coupe

French carmaker Renault has partnered with avante-garde designer Ora Ito, to come up with an electric restomod of the brand's classic 1970s two-door coupe, called the '17'.

The restomod car, called the 'R17' features a modern battery powertrain and clever integration of screens combined with retro looks and other traditional elements all across. The Renault R17 features a brown paint scheme and is 7 inches wider than the original coupe. The restomod also features flared wheel arches housing wider and taller wheels. The front and rear lights are LED but mimic the design of the original Renault 17. There is also a slight nod to the original coupe on the C-pillar louvres.

Inside, the R17 features four individual displays behind the steering wheel, mimicking the analogue layout of the original. There is also a central infotainment screen but is positioned below the dash.

While the original Renault 17 featured a 1.6-litre engine, the restomod gets a rear-mounted electric motor producing 270 BHP. While Renault didn't mention the size of the battery, the car's range is estimated to be around 249 miles (400 km) on a single charge.

Designer Ora Ito said, "I wanted to drape the Renault 17 in a second skin, showcasing the design while giving it a more contemporary look in terms of flow, dynamics and rationality through my own approach to design and my own signature: simplexity." Ito added, "I wanted to simplify the more complex aspects.

Lovely retro design. Such designs will make even the most loyal ICE people buy an EV.

Somebody should have told the Renault boffins, the Renault 17 was not a very successful model at all. Sold less than 100K units.

Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself.

Wow. It looks straight out of concept car heaven. So glad this is real!

From the looks of the car, it looks like a low volume product from the get-go.

As a concept, this looks great. Very quirky and Retro with a hint of Resto-mod thrown in. I like it.

Thats what I thought. It sold very slowly till it 1978. As for this concept- I highly doubt this will make it to production.

It's just a Homage which will never be seen again.

I used to think that they were sweet looking but Renault 12 mechanicals and rust meant they dissolved in a flash!
